Microsoft Bans Xbox Live Content Thieves

Feindflug said:
Apparently you can have access to arcades, DLC from hacked accounts (something like game sharing I suppose)...maybe that's what MS is talking about.

Also am I reading BS or is it possible to redeem points from a point code generator? :|
Probably BS (Id hope so anyway). How codes (keys) like that have worked for years is that keys have to be activated by a server before they'll function (i.e. they join a list of keys that'll work on the server). This is to prevent theft of cards from stores (e.g. they are active only when paid for) and from people making a keygen (the latter would be useless for them as while they made mathematically correct keys, they would be non-functional).

Remember when Mass Effect 2 first came out for the 360 and there were some DLC that was leaked by accident so a bunch of people got the DLC for free, does this count?
If stuff like this is what's getting people banned, it's Microsoft blaming customers for a rule they never broke. Accidental free marketplace content is Microsoft's problem. To punish people for downloading that would be incredibly inept.

I am willing to bet its the nojtag thing.

Some of my friends where worried they would get banned for the license transfer thing but I dont think Microsoft has any grounds to ban on that. However the nojtag method has all rights to get a user banned.

Which is why it's hugely unlikely it would happen.

I'm pretty sure its happened though. I remember there was an exploit a few years back with FIFA where people got banned for using the exploit to get some free DLC for one of their online modes.

coming from a country that has a 62% rate of software piracy, i'm not surprised with this. the already mention "NOJTAG" method is rampant here and many profiles have been banned by Ms, with users outraging in many local forums, they were sure nothing was gonna happen to them. with this method your could play for free all dlc, arcades and GODs. i think the free GOD was the thing that made Ms start this wave of bans.

While there's no evidence, based on the tweets, sounds/looks like it might only be hacked consoles or those who used some other method to 'steal' content.

So if @JustHavoc and @leedakid got banned chus of “Marketplace Theft”..shit im next

And the bans started in late August...

During the course of a recent investigation, we have discovered users who illegitimately accessed Xbox LIVE Marketplace downloadable content. Our investigation reveals that this access was intentional and not accidental, constituting a blatant violation of the Terms of Use for the service. We will not divulge additional information regarding individual suspensions for these offenses.

Please know that we are being very careful regarding these suspensions, and have clear evidence regarding each account issued a permanent suspension from the service. We apologize for any frustration or confusion resulting from our inability to share individual details, and thank you all for your cooperation in this matter.

Cheers!

There's a difference between "accidental free marketplace content" that you just download from the marketplace and using exploits though.

Pretty sure that was the end result of people taking advantage of a in-game exploit that got them stuff for free.

Hehe reminded me to view the treasure chest that is the Xbox Live Suspension forum:

Find glorious posts like:

Note the Gamertag... sure dood... you are the father of that guy :p

That forum is gold. I'm amazed how many folks are raging hard due to their bans. If you don't want a ban. Don't fucking cheat. It's not exactly hard is it.

pretty much this

now that I've heard of NOJTAG, i'll take back my theory about the 6000 point account thing i'm sure people buy these intentionally, but hey, I know at least I got fooled and I'm normally bulletproof when it comes to scammy stuff.

This one's remarkably foolish:

The account was suspended for having a modified tenure of 10 years. Considering the service has not been available that long, this was clearly done using unauthorized external modification. Your suspension will stand as issued.

Edit: Also:

That is a rather vibrant avatar your account has there.

It's probably just the demo despite being the "full game". Look underneath, the All Class Pack is probably the REAL game purchase, and it matches with how they said the game would be sold (single character for 800, all for 1200).

Its just the demo worded horribly!

If it was MS's mistake, a miss price, mspoint code grabbers etc. I doubt they are banning, it will be the people who who worked out how to auto generate point codes a few months ago. I think they put a stop to it after 48 hours, this is probably the follow up.

Isn't this essentially the free-to-play model (or at least a variant thereof)?

Don't see the Red Faction one.
That one's no longer available for free.

You can see all the free stuff on Live here and filter by categories: -

http://www.xboxgaming.co.za/xbl-marketplace-free

If you filter by themes and search for the word "premium" you'll see the 4 that are available. There's loads of free non-premium themes too.

I wouldn't say so. What you're downloading is a demo. If you want to unlock a character so you can play the full game, you have to pay 800 MSP, or you can unlock all of the characters for 1,200. It doesn't seem any more "free-to-play" than any other demo to me, but I could be wrong about that as I only got to play it for 15 minutes before I had to turn it off.

No, that's just the way that game rolls. See how the 3 character pack is $15, and each one is $10. That's how they make their money, plus microtransactions.

Edit: beaten

Well lame. Was hoping I got a super deal!
