Microsoft Flight Simulator has been licensed by Dovetail Games

With both this and Ground Zeroes launching on the 18th, which is when the Winter Sale starts, I wonder if they'll be among the first Dailies.

Hrm... I hope they don't try the stupid direction MS last tried it in (they tried to turn it into a freemium game where you paid per area you got with the excuse that each area was extremely detailed. That in itself would kill it. Having only a set area and not the world to fly in was ok way back in the day when the tech couldn't handle more, but these days it's ridiculous to have walls you can't fly past).

Honestly, even if they were going to do freemium, I could ahve told them they would have been better off doing a very basic world that you could use as the base game and making people pay for better detailed areas. Rather than just flat out not even letting you fly anywhere that you hadn't paid extra for and not even having the whole world available.

And that is only the thing I noticed most, not even mentioning things other flight sim fans would have problems with (they also stopped supporting people making their own custom planes for it and custom areas).

Such a shame too. Not a huge MS fan but Flight Simulator is one of the few things I really enjoyed from MS (hell, it was the first game I got for my computer, a Mac even cause at one point they supported mac with it, and the one I played the most as a kid. And it's the one game I actually put together a PC to play later on when they no longer supported Macs).

FSX: Steam Edition pretty much sounds like FSX Gold that you can buy in stores now, which is FSX + Acceleration SP, with the following differences:

1. It's on Steam
2. It uses Steamworks instead of Gamespy for multiplayer

And from what I've read that's pretty much it. The bigger news from their website IMHO is this:

Dovetail Games said:
In addition to distributing Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition, Dovetail Games is also working on its own original titles based on MicrosoftÂ’s flight technology, carrying on nearly three decades of tradition established by this award-winning franchise.

So we might be seeing future versions of Flight Simulator coming out by Dovetail Games, similar to the way they handle Train Sim now, with incremental improvements and such. And of course with thousands of dollars of DLC too I'd imagine, just like Train Sim.

Does it have Rift DK2 support?

Not any more than FSX currently supports it, I'm afraid. So with some modding it might work just like FSX does now. I'd bet that any future versions of Flight Sim by Dovetail (bases on the FSX code) down the road would have support in game though. Prepare 3D, the Lockheed iteration of FSX, already has it in game now.

I'll get it for sure, mess trying to get the game running on Windows 8. Finally a date, sooner than I thought. Just having this game and this world available was all I hoped for. If they can make decent software on their own with the engine then that's a bonus. But the big big thing Flight Sim has over all other, even serious and mechanically sound sims is that big world in all its glory. I have my doubts Dovetail will go that far with their own attempt but we'll see.

Completely off topic, but looking at their website I've just found out that Dovetail Games are based literally about two minutes from where I work! No interest at all in any Simulator games though, so I can't even try to pretend to feign interest in their output.

Why did Microsoft never bring Flight Simulator to consoles, even just Combat Flight Simulator. That is a big giant hole in console gaming. Phil!

Crimson Skies could have been an amazing Flight/Uncharted mash up.

I want great flying games on consoles.

Mainly due to controls. Consoles don't have keyboards or HOTAS setups, and realistic flight sims pretty much need them. You could never fly FSX with just a Dualshock, there are just too many control assignments. They could dumb it down of course, that's what they were trying to do with the whole move to Microsoft Flight and the firing of the Aces Team, but that tanked terribly hard because no one really wants something like that.

Thank god FLIGHT tanked. Offensive stuff. Planes with no cockpit, wow. Realistically MS letting the FS engine and rights go was the best thing we could've hoped for.

Not sure about PS4, but PS3 had keyboard/mouse support and there were quite a bit of HOTAS compatible released as well.

You definitely could do FSX on a dual shock, You just need to use shift commands for buttons. Such as button X is different than L1+X or R2+X.

I play Tie Fighter and Elite: Dangerous on controllers doing exactly this.

It just isn't the most intuitive interface for a casual console user to understand, which is probably the biggest barrier.

This is hitting just at the right time, Im building a rig for my Grandfather as a Christmas present, he currently plays this game at 15fps on a mini PC with everything set to low.

Is there anything I should know to set it up properly to take advantage of it?

The right is as follows:

i7 920
8GB of Ram
AMD 5970 (had to cheap out here as I ran out of budget)

There are 5970s out in the wild? They might be even more expensive than let's say a 270 or 760. Or are you getting a used one?

Ok, are Tie Fighter and Elite: Dangerous trying to simulate a real flying plane with all the many different things to be done on it? Flying the actual plane isn't the only thing that needs to be simulated for a true flight simulator. Messing with all your instruments on the planes (the many radios and navigation instruments. And not just saying go to this point but actually simulating what you would do in real life), talking to ATC, messing with trim.

Flight SImulator is supposed to be realistic enough that, it well, simulates actually flying. I know my BF uses it as light practice for when he was learning IFR. I mean X Plane outright advertises that they are used in real flight simulators when training pilots (probably a more advanced engine). That's the market these games are aiming towards. People who want to simulate the real thing at home. Including people who want everything and the most realistic situation. NOt just people who want to take the plane up and mess around with it (like me ;) ). But the game actually is trying to appeal to more than people who just want a game. Some of those people it appeals to want it more as a simulator (like my BF who doesn't really game much but loves Flight Simulator. Though now that he has a real pilot's license he uses it less except as practice).

What in the world are you paying for that, I'm afraid to ask? Hopefully not much more than $50. That card uses a lot of juice when it's under load for what it does (about 7750 level graphics)

Its actually a hand down from a friend, remember this rig is only for Flight Sim and its for a 70 year old that has been ok with playing the game at 15 fps, so anything will be an improvement.

Steam store page is up:

Discounted at 80% off for $4.99. Can't wait to read some user reviews to see how it turned out.

I'm probably going to pick this up! My dad used to be way into this game, and I've got an old disc version kicking around, but it'll be so nice to have on Steam.

I bought this as it was cheap and I'm getting a joystick for Christmas anyway due to Elite. Figured it'd be nice to have something else to use it with.

I squealed when I saw FSX on Steam just now and couldn't hit the buy button fast enough. This made me happier than Ground Zeroes being on Steam today. FSX had DRM that made me reinstall the game after every reformat of my OS drive, now I won't have to do that with this Steam edition.

I had no idea Dovetail licensed Flight Simulator. I hope they live up to the legacy with FSXI.

Yeah it's really cool. I think Dovetail is basically the perfect team to take over this franchise.

This runs smooth as butter for me... but how do add ons work here? Is that coming later? There's nothing in the fsx folder I find on my computer.

Yeah, even though I have owned FSX and the Accel pack for like ten years, I just may pick it up on Steam too. The convenience of not having to do the install dance or needing discs ever again sounds worth it to me.

From what I'm reading, add ons work the same as they do in the old version, you just need to install them to the new Steam directory. And it even sounds like there have been a few minor install tweaks done to make the game run better on modern systems. There are some hiccups though from what I've read, FSX Steam is a different version number on the EXE file than FSX Gold, so a few third party add ons aren't recognizing it during installation. There are ways to work around it, some requiring having both FSX versions installed and manually copying files over and tweaking INI files, so its cumbersome, but doable.

Still, I may just spend the $5 and try it out. If I can get all of my addons installed and working then migrating FSX to new PC's and reformats would be super easy and convenient compared to what I have to do now. A fresh reinstall of FSX takes me DAYS now, so it may be worth the $5 to me.
