Microsoft FY2017 Q3 Earnings - Xbox Live MAU 52m (up 13%) Gaming revenue $1.928bn

Question: would ms have shifted to reporting mau if they were leading in console sales like last gen? Do you really think they would have stopped talking numbers if they were winning?

They'd probably be doing both.

Anyone acting like MAU isn't a widely reported stat is flat out wrong.

pretty much this.
the change to MAU would've happend no matter what.

Xbox as the Home Console ist just a (big) part of Microsofts Gaming Division today.
Not the vast majority anymore.
Console only sales does not represent their PC gaming efforts and performance
Console only sales does not represent their Minecraft audience and performance

They probably would not have stopped to report hardware units - at least not this early, but they certainly would've added MAU and revenue
Sony, Nintendo and Japanese publisher are pretty much the only left, that still focus on the old metrics and business models.

They did MAU on 360 like Sony do sometimes with PS (it was 60 million years ago)... these reports are not the main focus and happens sporadically just for curiosity of investidors.

MAU is not new.

The focus on it is... just because MS have fear to share actual sales numbers (Sony did the same to hide Vita sales numbers in the past).

If MS was winning or at least selling good then they for sure focus on units sales instead MAU.

Yup.

Sony reported it a few times this gen. Difference is MS does it alot more these days. Like you said, Sony did it to hide Vita sales.

So, whoever thinks that a company shifts focus from unit sales to MAU isnt hiding sales or are happy with sales are fooling themselves.

Just like when Apple shifted to mainly talking about profits and iPhone sale totals when Android started eating into iPhone market share.

.....but they sure did talk about market share when they were creeping up on and eventually passed Blackberry.....

I cant remember the last time Apple mentioned market share.
