Microsoft introduces new energy-saving option for Xbox One, saves $6-15/year

Mine has always been on Instant On, the only thing I hate is that in the middle of the night, I will hear the external drive(I have a seagate 4TB expansion drive) turn on for a few minutes, and I can hear the humming and its like its looking for something, then about 10 minutes later it will turn off..weird thing is that I have my external drive set to turn off when the xbox one turns off yet it will turn itself on at around 2:30AM its very annoying, any way around this? I think its looking for updates thats why its turning on I guess I can uncheck install updates but maybe I should just leave it the way it is

You're correct. It turns on to install updates for the games that are in it.

You could turn off the install updates option, but then you lose the biggest benefit from having Instant On.

Kudos to Microsoft to responding to criticism here. I wonder if a future console revision will drop Kinect support completely to make further power savings.

Environmental Group Still Unhappy With Xbox One Energy-saving Mode

“With this design, most users are likely to select the Instant-on mode because of the negative language such as "Slower start-up time" and "Get interrupted for updates" used to describe the Energy-saving mode,” writes Horowitz on the organisation’s website. “It’s also unclear whether Microsoft will ship its new consoles with the Instant-on feature already highlighted as shown above, which would require an extra step to choose energy savings instead.”

Horowitz notes there is no mention of the respective standby power levels for each option: “less than 1 watt for Energy-saving mode and 12.5 watts for Instant-on, which translates to an extra [USD]$33 to [USD]$75 (depending where you live) of electricity use over the typical five year life of a console, which is enough to buy an extra game or two.”

Horowitz suggests more neutral text to describe the Energy-saving and Instant-on options and that the Energy-saving setting should be the default setting should users not make a choice themselves.

Horowitz believes there is “no reason for a device to be drawing 12.5 watts 24/7 just so it can be ready to receive and install an update.”

Fuck off. Now this is just getting stupid. Why in christs name is this idiot targetting the Xbox One while millions of PCs and other consoles consume just as much power or more? And it's great that he doesn't see the value in receiving and installing updates while in standby, but I will happily pay $20 a year to have that available.

yeah, agreed, now hes just being an ass. They made a good change. And fast. This guy is bitching just to bitch.

I'm more likely to use instant on because I want my shit to start up faster. What MS needs to do is allow me to select standby or off without having to change that option in settings. It should just be on that menu that comes on when you hold the guide button like PS4. Fuck this dude and his neutral language request.

At some point you do have to ask who's pulling the strings of that group? Have they targeted other consumer products as well with this amount of zeal? as this is getting very silly.

The "negative language" criticism seems silly, but the original complain had merit. I don't understand the negativity surrounding making it an opt-in instead of an opt-out. It just means more people are aware of the different power modes.
