Microsoft officially pulls DRM from Xbox One, announces new policies

But but but...the POWER OF THE CLOUD IS GONE!

How will those amazing games like Titanfall function without the power of the cloud?

Oh right...just fine...because all of that was 99% bullshit.

Back to switching discs whenever I want to play something else. Yay! :(
Can anyone confirm this feature is missing?

I was really looking forward to installing disks and then putting them away. Will I be able to play without the disk?

EDIT: Found the unfortunate answer.

I can fully understand removing the online, drm stuff (and the celebration of it), but I really hope they don't remove the Kinect as part of the package. I agree having it to be on/connected is not a good idea BUT having it as part of the package is a good idea (so everyone has it).

I'm not a huge Kinect fan (the 1st version was terrible), but even I can see having it as part of the new console is a good setup (if it does in fact work better).

Now get rid of the mandatory Kinect and sell it at the same price as PS4 and we're done.

Still leaning towards a PS4 due to having PS+ and being cheaper, but glad to see MS finally removed all the things that we hated. Removing region protection was a nice surprise as well.

HAH!

Can't believe they went back on these policies. The policies they said were crucial to the system and could not be easily undone.

I think the damage is done though, especially since they are still launching at $100 more than the competition. I've already made my mind up to get a PS4. Not at launch granted. Probably in 2015 but unless the Xbox gets some amazing exclusive content I won't be giving Microsoft any money.

Amazing, totally didn't expect this! The difference in pre-orders must have been incredible. And stuff like the Amazon poll probably helped too.

Awesome, guys. This is totally awesome.

I'm still locked in for the PS4 at launch, and the Kinect requirement makes me very suspicious of the Xbox One, but at least now it may not be completely out of the question someday when it's much cheaper.

I'm sure this will be a big boost in public perception of the Xbox One, which means more units sold, which means more fierce competition between Sony and Microsoft, which is a good thing for us!

Hey, maybe you missed the part where a lot of their good features are gone because of the loss of DRM? Family sharing, not needing the disc, instant game swapping are all gone now. Those are some of the features that I liked the most.

None of those really seem like features that would require always online DRM, though.

What the hell...

This is some real news.

And Nintendo is now the only one left that still has region-fucked hardware. We are into an interesting generation.

I know Microsoft reads on GAF so I might as well put this here.

Thank you Microsoft for listening to all the feedback. As a gamer in the Philippines and part of an Xbox community here, we were all 100% upset with all those policies, particularly the country locking "feature". I just woke up today and all of this sounds like a miracle. I am very pleased with this news and look forward to playing on the Xbox One. All the best exclusives seem to be on your system so it was really heartbreaking originally to hear that there were so many restrictions.

So yeah, I'm really happy about this. It's probably the first time I witnessed in the gaming universe the ENTIRE gaming world (journalists, consumers, maybe even some devs? I dunno) literally pushed Microsoft into DOING THE RIGHT THING.

Once again, Microsoft I really appreciate this. Will buy your system now when it releases.

Oh, and NO MORE REGION LOCKING! That's a BIG win for us outside the USA/unsupported regions!

People on twitter and facebook used the infinite power of the cloud, it was super effective!

I too would like to thank #PS4NoDRM, #XboxOneNoDRM. And these fine folk.

We all owe you infinite beers.

bahahahaha "fuck you eduardo"

I'm probably being cynical just...

However, Microsoft were fully aware of the huge backlash their new policies and DRM stance brought about before the console was even revealed yet they still implemented them. This didn't change after their reveal, it was still the case at E3... when the backlash was only intensifying. The top brass were justifying and talking up these policies up until a few days ago... now a week after pre-ordering has been happening en masse and the figures are becoming crystal clear, Microsoft suddenly side with the consumer and realise their mistake... they hit the panic button, they can't afford to be dropping too far behind straight off the bat, don't get me wrong it's still a win for consumers to an extent, especially for the people who were always intending to get this no matter how pissed off they may have been with all this DRM nonsense that Microsoft have been touting. I'll probably never get a One because of how they've gone about this whole situation, there was never any genuine attempt by Microsoft to placate the consumer base until their was hard pre-order data pouring in. The whole thing has become a PR nightmare and they really couldn't have handled this any worse than they already have.

Too cynical?

Not at all, this is exactly how I see it too. Still not getting an Xbone at launch, though now I might pick one up down the line if it turns out to get a decent library. They still haven't undone the damage they did to their reputation in my eyes and I doubt they'll be able to recover it this gen.

Wow! Just wow!

You think Microsoft are doing this out of the kindness of their heart?

I can assure this is purely a business decision. If they believed even for a second they could get away with it, they would still be doing it.

Same goes for Sony and Nintendo

Well, games can still be always-online if they require it.

Buy the digital version?

Honestly my first reaction was to hate this because that meant that xbox one has a much better chance to do well, but then I remembered the only reason I don't want the xbox one to do well were these policies. It's confusing.

Does microsoft still deserve boycotts for even thinking of trying something like this? Like how stopping a thief in the act before he can steal anything doesn't excuse his attempt at stealing, or in this situation is admitting fault enough? I'm honestly not sure either way.

I seriously have no idea how to feel about this change. Like there's no emotions running through my head. I should be happy, but I'm still not.

It's like a school bully being cocky and acting like he's better than another kid, then coming to school the following week with an apology letter.

Does the letter magically erase all the terrible memories that the kid has of the bully? No.

why is everyone mentioning titanfall like that caused this change ? what did i miss about titan fall

Has there been any word on whether a 24-hour check-in will be required for digitally-purchased games?

"In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today."

So I just preordered the X1 just because I fucking wanted to.

I now have an X1 AND a PS4 preordered lol.

One of them is getting canceled right before launch. In fact, one of them will get canceled immediately if I hear of a price cut...

The ball's in your court, MS.
