Microsoft officially pulls DRM from Xbox One, announces new policies

Am I supposed to applaud Microsoft now or something?

This does not change the goal the company obviously has for gaming. They have just delayed it, maybe not even until the end of this generation.

I kind of feel this way, too.

There's been a breach of trust.

I'm keeping my PS4 pre-order and still not buying an Xbox One for the foreseeable future.

Big 360 fan here, too.

P.S. Does this mean the cloud has evaporated?

How long did they even have the "Game Sharing" thing up for? A week? A week of some vague promise and confusing descriptions? It was fucking nothing. It was them making a last ditch attempt to save DRM.

This needs to be said over and over.

They couldn't even tell us how it worked. As with everything else, each new interview was more confusing than the last.

It was vapor-ware. I'm convinced.

I wonder how much money this cost Microsoft? Their whole console was built around being always online and to not have that always online be their it must be costing them quite a bit of money. They have been throwing around a lot of money though for third party exclusives and dlc, new first party studios, their entertainment studio, and entertainment deals.

It's great that this happened but still, fuck MS for ever trying this. If people never made noise about it this would have happened. That alone is enough for me to not buy the system.

Still a PS4 and PC for me.

So no more discless. Fucking hell.

Can't they give us the option?

FUCK.

But they do?
You can buy every game on the Marketplace the day it is released.

My fucking god, he just keeps out twating himself with every tweet. What a useless bag of cunts he is.

There is no reason why MS can't do both, as far as having a game digitally linked to your account and still have you be able to play off the disc.

Those bitching this feature is gone are so ignorant to see that as a right by a consumer you should be able to either sell the disc and the license associated with it. It is corporations that like to differentiate your right over your property just because the medium is new and the law have yet to catch up.

If you care so much, keep fighting and have your right carry over to digital, something that Steam is long over due to perform. Imagine a market place where you can sell your games after you are done with them. I know I would be buying a lot more games.

Not cynical at all.

I'm pretty confident that this move of theirs has very little to do with consumers. It's more to do with business and the potential affect all of the negative press, and the PS4's position, could have on them. They need that install base. And they don't have the kind of brand recognition to recover from a disaster situation like the PS3 did.

This is a business move, nothing more. Unless I see a change in leadership, I'm sure they'll do another twist in a couple years when there are enough people invested in their system and they've built up Xbox One to have a good amount of recognition.

that what i was thinking too, one week after the pre order are up there are changing everything and saying that there a listening I dont buy it.

No matter what, proud day for GAF and gamers everywhere who spoke up. Piss on the apathetic apologists who would never see this day come.

So for a whole generation we were all doing a 360 after seeing Microsoft's console and finally it is their turn.

Reading some of thread actually gets me thinking that us "gamers" deserve to get screwed over by these gaming companies.

They announce shitty policies
Lie about why the policies were needed.
Then they backtrack while still effectively saying that the policies were good and they were the future.

How do alot of "gamers" react. By rewarding them saying "Day One"

Simply staggering. I start to think that if MS didn't cave, gamers would have. How quickly we forget.

Stunning backtrack from Microsoft. Wow. Good. That said, it wasn't the "voice of the gamers" that spooked them. What got their attention is when many critics were putting their $$$ where their mouth was...i.e. $399 PS4 preorder. Retailer pressure probably got to MS too. Money talks and has a knack of getting businesses to listen attentively.

For me though...the damage was already done, and likely beyond repair. Too late, Microsoft. I've already preordered the PS4 and have no intention of ever buying the Xbox One. I still harbor a deep distrust for Microsoft.

I still expect the PS4 to win this generation worldwide. However the X1 should now perform respectably, and it has a decent chance to win the US.

You want new online experiences and better XBox live so we give you game sharing and instant game changing.

You hate it and now want offline gaming and discs and no cloud, so we take Sony's route and remove DRM, region restrictions and always online.

Ooooooo but noooooo now you hate OFFLINE GAMING. NOW YOU WANT GAME SHARING AND CLOUD.

WELL YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU LIKE.

WHAT THE FUCK YOU THINK YOU WANT???

THAT IS WHY WE DO TV APPS AND AVATAR SHOES ALL DAY, DADS AND KIDS WILL ALWAYS LIKE THEM!!!!!!!!

Xbox 180 or Xbox Blue?

I'm still kinda surprised this happened but I have other problems with the console stopping me from buying it so eh

In a way, MS one upped Sony in that Sony didn't backpedal after the 599 debacle whereas MS did?

Why is Sony in your good graces for being humbled for the PS3 but MS YOU CAN NEVER TRUST after they do something Like this BEFORE THE CONSOLE EVEN LAUNCHED.

Its incredible. Seriously.. and gaf as a community should pat itself on the back. Outside of the 10 die hards, everyone got on the same page with this shit, and kept annoying everyone. It got the coverage it deserved.

Microsoft provided so much controversy with every single non-answer and dodge. This really couldn't have happened without their asinine PR.

Special thanks to Sony

FUCK YOU EDUARDO EVERYONE!!!!!

This has been the BEST E3 EVER.

fuck you eduardo, indeed

It's crazy to see the type of shit people take from companies. Did they change? Yes, it's A LOT more then I expected, but they are doing something that they should have been doing in the first fucking place.

Sony gets my respect for not bullshitting me with "cloud" and arbitrary shit to push anti-consumer DRM, not because they just said "no drm."

You're right of course, but I guess I'm cynical and don't believe anyone who is offering me a luxury service I don't need is totally in the business for my benefit. Yet, I will still patronize them for my entertainment.

Bottom line though, Sony deserves to get my money first. Likely to get an Xbone 180 used, if possible.

I secretly wanted to watch microsoft crash and burn miserably, it only took them a week to backpedal.

This just means I'll be able to play Remedy's new game someday :D

Am I supposed to applaud Microsoft now or something?

This does not change the goal the company obviously has for gaming. They have just delayed it, maybe not even until the end of this generation.

It's like everyone forgot the last several weeks of moronic comments, making the consumer out to be an idiot, and fucking us over.

I don't see why they still can't do family share. If people don't mind checking in every 24 hours to verify their libraries or staying connected to make sure only one person is playing the game at a time then offer it to them as an OPTION. Plenty were apparently willing to join Microsoft's all digital future. Let them do it, but let the rest of us keep our disc and used market that doesn't need approved resellers.
They could do it with the power of the cloud but seems some 3rd partis were probably against the idea.

This reactive change was the right move to make, hard, but right.

I applaud MS for doing the hard thing and backtracking, regardless of whether it was due to less than stellar pre-ordering numbers or continued criticism from the masses.

That said....

It's still $100 and a Kinect too much for me, but at least the Xbone is back on my radar for purchase sometime in 2014.

The real popcorn is getting saved for who MS choose to hang this on and throw to the meat grinder, because there's no way all of the Xbox division management come out of this debacle unscathed, interesting times ahead!

This is so amazing. I am officially on board with XBONE right now. That said though I truly think this is company in dire need of new management.

Shame about the dropped features, but frankly they weren't worth the loss of the other rights. They should have gone half way and permitted offline play with the disk, but require the online checks with library based games. Don't blame them for pulling the whole kit and kaboodle though. Easier for them to explain and easier for us to understand.

It's possible they could re-introduce option online features during the lifespan of the Xbox One. But the idea of requiring any sort of online check-in, optional or not, will be too toxic for the next few years at least. Too bad they didn't think it through a little better.

Its a step in the right direction for Xbone. Now at least I can finish out the Halo saga one day. Still going PS4 on day one though. The arrogance and overall failure to communicate with me on a level that gets me excited about Xbone is still there. I still get a bad vibe from MS. I realize that sounds kind of dumb, but its all in their messaging and while today was a great move on their part, it doesn't erase all the damage that's been done.

There is no justifiable reason they can't implement family sharing with digital purchases. They still don't get it.

Yep. They really should offer both options. It would be very tempting to buy digital if I knew I could share with other people. This should have been their approach to begin with...offer BOTH options. Ease the masses into the idea that going digital has benefits (even though you can't trade them in).

XBox DRM announced
Gamers go nuts
Preorders at GameStop mysteriously stop
MS abandons DRM
Announcement that preorders ceasing was due to demand

/removedhat

Seriously though, I wonder if someone like GameStop, Redbox and the like had a huge influence over this?

It puts me in an interesting position. I was dead set on XBO before they announced the DRM (And price). So I was resigned to a PS4 by default. At E3 when Sony had announced no DRM and was $399 it was a dead simple choice. Now XBO is DRM/Used restriction free I'm back to umming and ahhing.

Well a big congratulations to all the people who ran and participated in the campaign to stop this bullshit.

The worst part about this is that we'll right back at square 1 in 2021 when the next consoles get announced and people are yet again screaming no DRM. this fucking sucks man.

We had a game console with digital borrowing and trading. Now we have a Xbox 360.
Nah, man. They'll evolve the current set of policies to suit changes in the marketplace inside of the generation. When next-next-gen comes, the X1/PS4 generation will have proved that the digital transition was inevitable by fact that 70%-80% of all games released on consoles are digital only. No way all those indies are getting Blu Rays for their games and, even when there are so few of the big publishers left now that can fund and market AAA games that need discs to sell to a wider audience, many of their mid-sized and smaller titles will probably see DD-only releases. As well, F2P/Freemium is pretty much DD only, needs online connection to operate, and should grow in their overall representation of console games fairly drastically. Pretty certain that this coming gen will witness the death of the disc-based console game on MS and Sony platforms such that the next-gen of them, if there is one, in 2020-ish will be DD-only all they way through. Hell, by then, we may be at the point where a true cloud-based console that is more dumb terminal than local supercomputer, will be feasible in the biggest markets.

Wow awesome news, but... (This is my opinion, don't freak out)

It's $100 to expensive.
The controller looks terrible.
Kinect Required.

Damage is probably done for many people.
