Microsoft officially pulls DRM from Xbox One, announces new policies

The fact that they even considered doing it is incredibly insulting. They've already showed they cannot be trusted. MS can still go fuck themselves.

This is awesome, being active on Gaf when the DRM was announced and now seeing this, everything has come full circle. As I have stated before I was not interested in the PS4's offerings and wanted Killer Instinct and Crimson Dragon. Thank you Microsoft this is awesome!

This is a big victory for gamers. The pressure does matter. They had no choice and their awful spin attempts were failing big time. I'm glad they did this, though it will take time to trust them again. The chances of me getting an Xbone have gone from 0 to 50/50 over the next few years.

That's a bigger point than at first glance. If they can simply say 'lol, j/k' about their online policy, they basically acknowledge that "Da powuh ov da clowdz!" is basically SimCity-style DRM bullshit, and those 'tree hunda towzan servurs!' are smoke and mirrors. It turns every single thing they said up to this point a falsehood.
Sure, but honestly, who really believed that garbage in the first place? It reeked like snake oil.

Exactly.
Would you go back to a bank that had tried to screw you over? A lot of people on here have very short memories.

I still don't trust MS, and the PS4 being more powerful and cheaper still makes it the best choice.

Still, better late than never. At least I will consider buying it now. With DRM it wasn't even an option.

Well, they spent about two craploads of money to initially moneyhat and promote that shit. That's all down the drain now.

Were I a financial market analyst/investor, I wouldn't consider this a fiscally prudent, properly spendthrift corporate policy. I'd start questioning the viability of the current leadership team(s) and Microsoft's long(er) term roadmaps. Doing tactical about-turns doesn't bode well for large corporations. Smacks of financially dangerous shortsightedness.

EDIT:
Microsoft is gonna add all these drm back in, in firmware updates over the next few years
I fear they might take the 'slow boil' route as well. Although I suspect it would mostly depend on how well the US market (MS's main focus) will fare in adoption rate.

You mean every bank?

My bank never screwed me over. I read the contracts (and know the terms) that I sign. You can earn tons of money with credit cards with cash back if you pay in full after each bill. Also with banks make sure to turn off overdraft protection since it is a huge scam/money maker for banks.

Good points all around.

After a price drop and a new model I might actually buy the Xbone now in a few years. Lying about the cloud stuff was shitty move though when it was obviously just very, very poorly disguised DRM. Can't say I feel very highly of Microsoft.

"pressure" meaning "sweet sweet pre order numbers"

Serious question here, why are people paranoid about Kinect being a "spy camera" now? That didn't stop people buying millions of the first one and it doesn't stop people buying laptops with integrated web cams. So why the paranoia?

I think it is mainly because it came out Microsoft is one of the companies sending stuff to the NSA, and apparently they were the first to sign up to do it.

Well there is no DRM now, so we need another thing?
Serious though - the camera can be turned off (or paused or whatever), so people should not freak out.

I would've loved to be a fly on the wall when all the reactions to the Xbox announcement were coming in and when they first starting having the meetings about how to fix the situation. I wonder what made them decide to scrap all the DRM procedures that they had worked on for so long (as opposed to tweak the DRM procedures, or come out with some massive PR campaign to fix the situation). They just completely capitulated.

With Xbox 360 you can disconnect the camera. With most integrated webcams, there is a light to indicate that it's switched on.

Xbox One can't function without the camera being connected and active. It's always on when the console is on.

Because of you all i can't do the family share thing now.

I hate all of you.

Because of all of you, now Microsoft understands that the gaming community aren't "just" full of blind sheep thats will be brought in and dazzled by bullshit wrapped in shinny PR buzz words. The now understand the value of consumer loyalty.

I love all of you.

I have no idea why kinect seems to be a deal breaker for some people on this forum.

Generalizing, it's so simple.

The industry had a platform to do something new. Instead, they decided to stick with the norm. I have to say, I'm disappointed in both Microsoft and Sony.

Doesn't the Xbox logo on the kinect turn on when it's activated? Also the camera can be put in pause mode as derfeef just mentioned.

so why is that bad? didn't MS say it is NOT always on?

When the new things are bad, I'm glad they stick to the norm.

Focus on better, not necessarily new.

I find it hilarious and sad at the same time that some people STILL complain, complain, and complain some more, jeezzz.....

Microsoft said they wouldnt change the DRM stuff. See what they did here?

We know the stuff from befor : No DRM, DRM, Always online, not always online, never always online, Kinect always sending informations to Microsoft, not always sending informations to Microsoft etc

They WILL change it back someday. We all know it. Did they say it will never change now? No! So there is our old arrogant Microsoft back.

EDIT: M$ changed to Microsoft so people stop bitching.

I...Rather, my wallet doesn't forgive them, natch.

This is about people properly complaining about being shoved, though. Hopefully, this makes the starkest version of future video gaming a little less inevitable. Good job, everyone here and elsewhere!

I'm happy for all the guys around here who couldn't live with such restrictions; from my point of view I don't care, because I was more looking forward to features like family sharing and having the option playing directly from the hard drive without changing the disc. Yeah I'm lazy as hell. :)

But the sad thing on this development is the behavior of several person around the MS management. Major Nelson for instances is a great guy and is - literally spoken - a major reason why Xbox is so successful, but in the last weeks he lost lots of reputation, making wrong or anchorless statements. Especially after making fun of his last interview partner about the question "if it's not easy to block or de-activate the 24h internet check" costs him a lot of his reputation and credibility now, in consideration how "easy" it was in the end getting back to the roots.

Anyways, heads will roll and I expect better PR in the next weeks/months compared to the last weeks.

Microsoft already stated it can be completely disabled in the settings. And if you're that paranoid then put a baby towel over it. I for one am glad it's no longer a "peripheral" and developers can take full advantage of it knowing it's part of the console.

Wait, people still write M$ with the dollar sign?

No discs required and lending is bad? I know where you guys are coming from, but I was ready to go all-digital and for the few discis I would buy (special editions eg) I was looking foward to install the game, and never bother about the disc ever again.

I have no problem with how it is going to be now since I can still buy digital, but the lending stuff was a thing I looked forward to but that's not off the table completely I guess.

Wait, people still write M$ with the dollar sign?

Kids never grow up :)

So the XBO should be released in November...in selected countries ofcourse :D
I am thinking that all this DRM crap is already implemented in the core of the console. The operating system, the hardware that supports it, everything. Now they tell us that with a few months before release they are gonna change everything and start from scratch?
bwahahah
