Microsoft officially pulls DRM from Xbox One, announces new policies

Wow, I've been traveling all day and just read this.

AMAZING news. A whole gen of games just got its future proofing back, and went from disposable to collectible. I wish I could buy Gaf a round of beers.

M$ said they wouldnt change the DRM stuff. See what they did here?

We know the stuff from befor : No DRM, DRM, Always online, not always online, never always online, Kinect always sending informations to M$, not always sending informations to M$ etc

They WILL change it back someday. We all know it. Did they say it will never change now? No! So there is our old arrogant M$ back.
Wow at all the "M$", also no company in the WORLD is going to promise you that their policies aren't going to change. That's not shocking at all.

I'll never forget how dangerously close we came to an all-DRM future, and that it was Microsoft's fault. All it took was for the guy who calls the shots at Sony to say "Hey MS's doing it, so we can do it and get away with it!" The industry really wouldn't have cared that Nintendo wasn't doing it, since they've divorced themselves into their own reality long ago.

Instead Sony - to their great credit - did the right thing, and a GAF inspired outrage campaign sealed the deal.

This really is a history making day. In any industry now any company that wants to try DRM crap will remember that one time when mega corporation Microsoft was felled by even attempting it, and they'll back off.

Before everyone goes hay wire... this IS a good thing. But is it too little too late? Can MS put the genie back in the bottle? The fart in the box? Only time will tell.

Microsoft is gonna add all these drm back in, in firmware updates over the next few years

This is exactly what I think they'll do. You don't scrap stuff that cost you millions of dollars in infrastructure just to throw it all away one day.

I definitely agree with this. This is obviously their plan to make gamers think that they completely done away with DRM entirely just to make themselves look better right now, but to secretly implement it back in slowly through firmware updates one update at a time in which unsuspecting consumers won't know about.

The funny thing about that is that SCE never considered that option in the first place (Link.).

you can put a fart back in the box, but if the fart was particularly odious, people might not trust you around boxes for a while.

Microsoft needs to say. "We won't add the DRM back in with a future update."

There is a reason they aren't saying that, in fact they are saying quite the opposite with Microsoft can"not give any reassurance that Microsoft will not change its policies in the future."

I think Microsoft needed to hit the middle ground with consumers. Instead, they went extreme with the original announcement, and now the removal of almost everything they planned.

I'm very happy about the used game restriction removal. Microsoft should have changed the online check to once every two weeks. If you're offline during the check, having the disc in the tray is mandatory. With these changes, we could still have the disc installs and the family library sharing... along with being able to manage our games like we do now.

I actually can not believe this legit happened.

We can talk about the Kinect later, but I may actually consider getting an Xbone down the line when Halo 5: The Arbiter Strikes Back comes out.

There is a reason they aren't saying that, in fact they are saying quite the opposite with "no guarantees" policy.

Are you seriously thinking they're going to go down the line in a year or so and go "Haha suckers! DRM On! Suck it!"?

Can we get the thread title changed to "Microsoft officially pulls DRM from Xbox One temporarily."?

The people who think they are going to add in all of the DRM stuff after specifically removing it because of this shitstorm nightmare are insane.

Not to say they won't do it with another console in the future, but it was way too soon to attempt what they were trying. They need to refocus the XB1 and give digital incentives. Ease into an all digital console over a generation instead of an abrupt and scary leap from the 360.

They can legally, and there is not much you can really do about it. Whether they will or not comes down to whether they think they will make more profit one way or the other. The stuff you "sign" when you connect to Xbox live or purchase the console basically says they can change the terms, and the service at any time... and can end your service for any reason (or no reason at all).

How dumb would that be?

"Hey guys, I'm so glad you're enjoying all your used games, so here's a nice shiny DRM for you. Enjoy!"

No way that would fly. (With the consumers)

I find it hilarious and sad at the same time that some people STILL complain, complain, and complain some more, jeezzz.....
Kinda counterproductive isn't it? Complain when you feel you're not getting a good deal, but don't make it harder for companies to actually respond in the manner you want. Praise isn't required (we don't owe these people anything) but acknowledgement and respect for the reversal is self interest really.

People are much more prone to defending a product that they've already put a lot of money into than one they haven't spent any money on.

1.) It's a closed system
2.) It's perfectly legal (PS3 removed Linux)
3.) It's easy to do
4.) They already see the greed
5.) They already spent the funds...it's ready.

Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me.

I actually can not believe this legit happened.

MS was legit shook.

The saying goes: "If you want to make someone mad, punch them in the face. If you want to make them pay attention, punch them in the WALLET."

Consumers punched MS in the wallet by preordering PS4 over 180 by a ratio of anywhere from 3:1 to 10:1 depending on region and who's counting. MS noticed and pulled a U-turn, and here we are.

We can talk about the Kinect later, but I may actually consider getting an Xbone down the line when Halo 5: The Arbiter Strikes Back comes out.

The question is if Halo 4 has squandered all the goodwill built up from the franchise in one outing or not.

I think its nice to focus on the games, this whole console has been a fucking nightmare from start to finish. Every single thing they showed every single game the revealed always at the back of that was all this anti consumer bollocks, now we can look forward to a games machine for the games and services instead of all the different ways it was fucking us over.

so why is that bad? didn't MS say it is NOT always on?

at the end of the day even if they say you can turn off listening features it is NOT completely off at all. If you could shut it off completely you would be able to unplug it and your console should still work

So yes it IS always on not matter what carefully worded PR drivel they feed you

Not only that but In the "forgive us" letter they say they still believe online is the future. If you don't think this is coming at some point you're crazy.

I'm pretty sure even a company as big as microsoft wouldn't get away with all the illegal aspects of such a turnaround.

Past:
PS3 (Remove Linux, that can't be legal)
Steam Service Agreement Changes after changing the rules and gating you to play previous purchased games (that can't be legal)
Origins doing the same thing (that can't be legal)

Future:
Microsoft changing and doing the same thing (that can't be legal)

The presadant has already been set and is legal in the US and EULA.

Now the thought of buying physical games that can't be resold is still in question for EULA.

Now I'm getting One day one. I need my Forza 5.

Until this announcement I was getting PS4 first just to make a point to Microsoft though other than hardware and policy there is nothing that attracts me to it.

In effect (and in the long run) it doesn't matter that much. I assume they're going to be selling most of their games as digital downloads as well.

XBone's game still need initial internet activation. So technically 360 is still the go to console for those who aren't connected.

Then who is the XBONE for?

They make it sound so much like XBONE does not need an internet connection.. And it's not true, the shit is still connected and still treats physical media like online downloads in that it has to activate it on your account before letting you play it..

All they eliminated is the 24 hour check-in.

MS, fuck off.

I'm starting to consider doing the opposite... I thought the launch games were ok-ish but I was tempted to buy one to support the ambition of that project and counter the general backlash, but now that it's only an upgraded 360 it is really less exciting. :/

From what they said, only the console has to be activated online once. After that you can play offline forever, using physical support.

No. It said the system will need to be setup once via online. After that, you can do what you want offline. Individual games do not need to be activated.
