Microsoft on XBone Vertical Orientation: "It could damage the console!"

All my consoles that support vertical are set that way for space reasons. I really have no room for a bunch of hori consoles unless i start stacking them.

Luckily I have no plans to buy an xbone anytime soon so hopefully they have a new model out that corrects this by the time I'm interested.

how is this really bad news, common sense, should be used here, the console was designed so that after the intital setup, you never even have to touch it again if it were all digital. and putting something that big and expensive vertically seems like a bad idea in the first place.

But it supposedly happened to someone, therefore it must be an issue across all of them.

It didn't just happen to someONE. It was a systemic issue that happened all the time.

Walk into ANY GameStop and ask the employees if its common for the 360 the burn rings into discs, and they'll tell you YES every single time.

A certain percentage of all premium/core models didn't have proper protection in the disc drive, which would prefent the disc from hitting the lens. Which explains the perfect round scratches that we find on discs that have been scratched by a Xbox 360. Newer models like the Elite/Arcade/S and E don't suffer from this mistake.

Just as long as you don't move, why people would move a console that's powered on is beyond me, your Xbox 360 while it's on. It won't scratch discs.

Man don't you guys get scared of your console getting knocked over by accident if placed vertically?

My PS3 lives in an Expedit cube where it's next to impossible for anything to accidentally hit it. If something was really capable of knocking it over I'd have more serious problems.

My WiiU, my 360 fat, and my launch PS3 have been vertical since I got them.

In all seriousness, this sucks.

I legitimately do not have room for it.

Wasn't this kinda sorta known already? I mean, they never once showed it vertical.

Also, it seems like they chose and maximized cooling, airflow and acoustics around the horizontal position. Not a biggie if this ends up being really quiet and reliable.

I'm hoping the people "acting" shocked over this are joking. The system looks like a 1st gen bluray player and has a side 3.0 usb for external hdd support. They wouldn't put a key feature needed in such a stupid location if they planned for you to flip it on it's side.

The design has obviously always been a horizontal only affair.

Yup, ever since they revealed the box, I didn't think for one second that they ever intended it to be put on its side vertically.

Nobody posted this yet? GAF is getting slow

Remarkable.

.

There, I completed the sentence for you ;-)

In a week:

"We need to do a better job of communicating to our customers. Certainly, you can put your xbone vertical. The consumer market may not be fully ready for this transition, but we heard you loud and clear, and we are agile enough to respond swiftly. We hope this clears up any confusion created."

That's gotta be hell for cramped QA space.
Had all consoles on my desk sitting vertically PS3, 360, Wii and 2 PCs with almost no room for my cup-o-noodles :(

Such a small % of Xbone buyers will learn of this. Considering tons of Xbox 360 users currently positions it vertically they need to slap this shit on the front of the Xbone box in bright florescent lettering or they are going to get loads of broken consoles.

Why would anyone put their console vertically when the 360 chewed the shit out of DVDs?

This slim is pretty much designed to be vertical. Only the og console damaged disks but the og consoles also rrod. Everything that could go wrong went wrong with the first console.

This is interesting, and slightly disappointing as I liked being able to keep my 360 vertical. Of course, it isn't something that would keep me from buying the system, though. Oh well, I suppose I can live with it being horizontal.

Also, this is nitpicky I know, but I think the thread title is a bit misleading as I don't think they're saying it would definitely damage the console per se. It sounds to me that they're just playing it safe, at least according to Albert's wording: "It wouldn't be a cooling problem, we just didn't design the drive for vertical. Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didn't design it for both."

Albert's quote also says that they didn't design for that orientation but that you could do it "at your own risk." Which is what I think should be in the thread title (and that's actually the title of the gamespot article and the CNET article on it, for what it's worth). Again it's nitpicky, but just more accurate to the quote I think.

That kind of sucks that there is no option. The claim is 80% rolled with their console horizontal? I can't say I know of anyone who uses theirs horizontally. I used to with my old non-slim console, but it would get so hot on the top that I switched to vertical and never really had any problems. I did suffer a couple scratched discs in the beginning, but that was because I would bump or nudge the table I used to sit the console on.
The console wouldn't look good on its side, but it would fit better into my entertainment center that way.

And holy shit at that reverse unboxing gif... I lost it when I saw that. Absolute masterpiece.

Considering the picture on the front of the box is horizontal I think people can put 2 & 2 together. The picture on any 360 box is vertical. They aren't showing you the console just cause they think it looks good.

I have my 360s set up vertically, not a single disc scratch.

Hmmmm, wouldn't be too sure about that. Happened to me. Although I think most people who had their discs scratched was because they DARED pick up the 360 and move it with a disc inside. I can tell you that shit would tear the hell out the discs.

Shouldn't happen to the Xbone though, that's the beauty of blu-ray lasers and discs.

Its a fine piece of electronics kit that deserves its rightful and respectful placement horizontally in an entertainment center...

so no biggie and completely expected

It's a design decision, fair enough. I'm not sure why they have to lie about everything and blame the slot-loading Bluray drive when I've never heard or seen those have problems with orientation?

The only console I have very is the Wii u because it came with a stand. The one looks like it could topple on its own. I probably will most like leave ps4 horizontal unless I can get the stand for $free.

You don't have a PC?

Cold blooded for sure, but he should be careful not to "jinx" oneself... in the event PS4 has major hardware failure rate problems, as many launch systems often do. PS2 and 360 were notorious in this regard.

I hope they succeed though, since I'm getting one at launch and hardware problems suuuuck. I really should invest in a warranty for the damned thing...

Even if the PS4 does turn out fine, there is still the chance that you'll get a bad power supply.

Also, isn't the PS4, because it's smaller and has an internal power supply likely to be quite a bit louder than the Xbone? I know MS said that they choose the larger design and external power supply so that they could get it as quiet as possible.

Undoubtedly the thing should be significantly louder than Xbox One, in any event. All reports are Xbox One is as silent as a sleeping kitten (exaggeration, of course, but apparently it's impressively fucking quiet).

I would take the smaller, sleeker design of the PS4 though over the lower noise of the XBO, for the simple fact that I use Pulse Elites to output my sound, so I wouldn't hear the system purring anyway.

But yeah, internal power supply introduces a new set of possible areas of hardware failure, however I feel Cerny and the the Sony hardware engineering team must be aware of how infamous PS2 became with the hardware failures and how much it cost Microsoft to have to do that warranty for 360 owners, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a positive result :)
