Microsoft retires Groove Music service, partners with Spotify

Sigh, I loved being able to stream all the stuff I had in onedrive. (I somehow got 100gb from Microsoft.)

Going to have to figure out now how to get my library to Amazon Music/Google as I don't want to use spotify.

But what'll happen to my dank Eurobeat playlist for Forza Horizon 3?

OneDrive streaming is staying. It's stupid that they are removing music from the store.

So the Groove becomes just an app that accesses files from OneDrive? I would rather see it incorporated into Spotify. Maybe it'll take some time for that to happen.

There's no way Spotify would allow people to stream their own MP3s off OneDrive or any other could service directly off their app, unless they made it a premium-only feature or something like that.

Google Play Music allows you to upload and stream 50,000 songs for free without a subscription, and the Android app is really good imo.
My problem with Google play music is that I can't download my uploaded music to the memory stick on my Android phone. It is so frustrating.

Shit, I missed the word "stream" in there. Not interested in streaming at all.

Just something simple to play my thousand or so MP3s that I can sync up with my collection and playlists in the cloud. Groove did that without fuss.

Seven extra ads for Forza Motorsport 7 will take their place.

Weren't you streaming from OneDrive with Groove? You can upload to GPM and then set the files to be available offline, which will download them to your device.

I am totally indifferent to the continued existence of this product but very glad I can now delete it without it being restored every time my system gets an update. While I'm complaining, Apple should allow me to delete the fucking Chess app because give me a break.

Wasn't streaming no. Just syncing.

And yeah, I'd create the playlists at home, sync to the phone and mark the playlists to be available offline and voila. If I can do that with Google too, great. I take it my one-drive isn't going to play nice though, right?

Yeah, you can't direct sync from your computer to GPM. The process is essentially:

1) Upload music files to GPM servers.
2) Create playlists using either website or app.
3) Set playlists to be available offline from the app.

As far as working with OneDrive, you'd just need to set GPM to look for music from your OneDrive folder on your computer, but it will still need to upload them all again.

Alot of my music has copyright issues, or can't play on groove, even though it gets listed.

This is for post hard core genre and not as popular music

Any recommendations?

Gonna try amazon music's trial since I got those 10bucks

Back to Amazon I go. I'd try Spotify except I get a discount on Amazon Music Unlimited because I have a Prime membership.

This development with Groove makes me want to hold off on any more purchases in Microsoft Movies & TV. When Microsoft disconnected Disney Movies Anywhere it already gave me pause (and drove me to Amazon Video for recent Disney purchases) and this development with Groove seems like the writing is on the wall for other consumer-targeted services except Xbox (for now).

I ditched Groove last year. It was just really bad compared to the competition.

I don't get why Microsoft just can't enter any market and compete like the other tech giants do. Their product alternatives always end up being mediocre in comparison. Shit, I've coded apps in a weekend better than the garbage they had running on iOS.

Because they always approach new markets from position of power which they use in Office and OS thinking people will just use it because Microsoft made it.

Meanwhile they can't even force half the userbase to update to their new free operating system using every underhand trick that is legally allowed.

I suspect there's huge disconnect from reality going in Microsoft HQ and they have serious issues with echo chamber situation.

Sigh. Went from WMP, to Zune (GOAT), to Xbox Music, to Groove... It's been a weird ride. Nothing has topped Zune Media Player. Nothing will probably ever top Zune.

truth

I can't believe they had lightning in a bottle and smeared it with shit as people started to imitate what they had originally

The bigger problem is that they often act like a regional operating US company. The geographical availability of many of their products and services is often disturbing low.

I've tried Groove, Apple Music, and GPM and keep going back to Spotify anyway. It's strange how these huge tech companies have built-in advantages like larger ecosystems and insanely higher capital, but still lag far behind Spotify for quality of service.

As long as I'll be able to access my music on OneDrive it's ok I guess, but I liked the ability on Xbox to see a video clip of your own music when available. I just subscribed again last week for that feature, actually.

At least Forza Horizon 3 with Spotify would be cool, but I don't see Playground Games doing it when they're probably in full production of FH4.

Only thing IÂ’ll miss is the holiday music sales Microsoft always had. ItÂ’s the only time I used the service

What was so good about Zune? Was it just ahead of its time in terms of features ir something?

Did the music pass first I think. Social aspect of music was also quite new and well implemented, artist coverage was neat too. The UI was fantastic and still is, was kinda the first showing of the modern look you see in most software these days. Zune HD was fantastic hardware, even did HD video output. Microsoft were ahead of the curve in a few ways but they never pushed it, particularly worldwide then everyone caught up.

You can save music to storage for offline access, you don't have to stream a single KB if you don't want to. And I'm pretty sure you can select whether it should be stored on internal or external storage (my phone only has internal, so not 100% sure on that).

Yeah, you can't direct sync from your computer to GPM.

Hmm, yes you can...? They have the Music Manager program or whatever, which basically monitors the folders you select and uploads anything that gets added to them. I guess it's not technically "synced" though.

You can really do that? Please tell me how.

I use google play instead of Spotify since the later doesnt support the virtual credit card that I use, so thisbwould make me feel better for using a service that doesnt have as much music as spotify (and a worse app)

I use the streaming from Onedrive feature since I have an Office 365 family account but I never understood why radio streaming on Groove was a paid service on top of what I already paid.

What's the easiest way to transfer all my Onedrive music to Google Music?

It's not just streaming that is going away. The ability to purchase and download music from the store is also going away.

I got an email telling me that I need to download my purchased music by Dec 31st. I just checked and it appears that I bought 147 albums over the years. Never knew that. Wow.

Groove Music is excited to announce that weÂ’re partnering with Spotify to bring you the worldÂ’s largest music streaming service. On December 31, 2017, the option to stream*, purchase, and download music from Groove Music will be discontinued. After December 31, 2017, youÂ’ll still be able to listen to your purchased music if it has been downloaded.
Keep your current music collection intact by downloading to your devices any albums and tracks that youÂ’ve already purchased. You can download your purchased music through the Groove Music App until December 31, 2017.

To download your music, open Groove, go to your music collection and select the Purchased filter. Right-click or press and hold your music files and select Download from the menu.
Check out our FAQ for more info on moving from Groove Music Pass to Spotify.* WeÂ’ll continue to update the Groove Music app on all Windows devices so you can play the music youÂ’ve purchased and downloaded to your devices or stored on OneDrive.
*If you are a Groove Music Pass subscriber, we sent you a separate email regarding the December 31, 2017 termination of the Groove Music Pass service. Please read that email and FAQ for important details, including details on how you can move your Groove music to Spotify. We thank you for supporting Groove Music.

If it's just mp3 files you should be able to just upload them into Google Music. https://support.google.com/googleplaymusic/answer/1075570?hl=en

Also, someone correct me if i'm wrong, Spotify supports local file playback. If you add them to a playlist, will make it so those files can be accessed from whatever device you're playing that playlist on.

So the only way to listen to the music I have uploaded to GPM on my phone offline is to create a playlist? I bought an 80 gig memory stick and groove lets me download my music directly to it but I cant figure out how to do that with GPM.

Oh sweet. Is there Xbox One functionality coming then for all the games that used Groove?

Cuz I don't want to lose that in Horizon.

yeah but having to use one app to play from one drive and another to play stuff from a music pass would be really annoying.
I purchased all my music from the Windows Store. If I can't purchase music there, what's the point of selling Books? Is Movies & TV next to go?
One didn't have to use Groove to play music.
