More than 7.1 million users

At Gamefest 2007, Microsoft announced that there are currently more than 7.1 million Xbox Live users.

The company's game developer group general manager, Chris Satchell, said that Live users have instigated more than 25 million downloads on the Xbox 360.

According to Microsoft, the attach rate for Xbox Live Arcade titles is approximately 6-7 games per user. The company expects more than 100 titles will be available on the service by the end of the year.

That many? Really? I thought I was going pretty hard core at the arcade games. But I still don't have that many.

Oh wait, maybe that counts demos...

? 6-7 is hardly hardcore, and under that should be shameful. GAF average is something like 13 or so.

It would be much higher if they did, you'd think. If you could go online, who WOULDN'T go and download most demos on the XBLA?

I own Castlevania, Bomberman, Worms and Pac Man CE. I doubt it would count Hexic or XBLA Unplugged.

I have 10 but I only actually paid for three of them.

I'm pretty sure they have said there are more Gold then Silver subscriptions multiple times.

It means 8 million 360 owners have broadband at home.
It doesn't mean that either, since people can and do have multiple accounts.

It's basically just a meaningless statistic.

Yeah, some people must be buying a ton. I've only bought 3 and that was only recently with Catan, POP and Marathon. Prior to that nothing could convince me to part with cash.

Actually MS usually states that they can tell between dupe accounts and don't use them for the statistic, and realistically if they did count them it would exceed the amount of 360s that exist.

???? Some Maths ?????

7.1mil users X 6-7 arcade titles at rate = 42mil - 50mil Arcade game downloads?

EDIT 25 mil was wrong its 45 mil so it all adds up

Ignore below :D

50mil != 25 mil downloads?

25 mil downloads / 7.1 mil users = 3.5 Downloads each

25 mil downloads / 6-7 acrade title at rate = 3-4 mil arcade users?

keep plugging away, microsoft. maybe one day you'll catch up to steam.

what the fuck...?

why is steam and and xbl always in a bloody showdown on here?

xbl is a console based environment of an install base of 10 - 11 million.

steam has an installed base of 100 million at least.

i really don't understand that post.

50% is an arbitrary number. how is any number less than 100% a good number comparitively? it will bring up questions about "why aren't 5 million people subscribing to play games" or whatever.

These numbers are worthless really unless we have a third party company similar to the NPD or media create that gathers the data and information without any room for "playing with numbers" if you know what I mean.

Because they both do the exact same thing?
Except one is highly successful on a platform which has an open infrastructure and far more consumer choice and competition, and is massively successful, and one is on a closed platform with no competing service or competition and is less so?

More than 50% is a majority of users.

The 25 mil number was a mistake - its 45 mil. ;)

Actually in some ways steam is not a customer choice. It is required for valves games. Counter Strike is one of the most played online games in the world and requires being on steam. Much like Halo and gears do for xbox.

Customer choice would be games that launched on and off steam in the same timewindow like defcon, or games not native to steam but used by the community(does it do this now?)

is that 360, or xbox + 360?

Is that registered live silver/gold, or anyone whose xbox once pinged a MS server?

Need more breakdown otherwise its worthless.

MS quit releasing REAL numbers because they started to get tagged with bad press about the original Xbox only garnering 10% of its installed base online.

It is substantially higher than that, in the UK at least.

If it's 7 Arcade games per user, not even counting the hundreds of other downloads, how can there only be 25 million downloads? I'd expect nearly 100 million downloads by now.

Live has become more than just online multiplayer, so the breakdown between Silver and Gold subscribers really isn't all that necessary. In any case, Microsoft makes money off of every transaction.

In other words, the numbers are REAL, and they are substantial enough to prove that Live is a viable service to sell or otherwise provide services on.

More than 50% is a majority of users.

When reporting statistics, generally, you use the term "majority" to describe 66.6% or more.

Huh? The breakdown is absolutely necessary because it's the difference between people paying Microsoft $50 a year to play games online and those who don't.

This is a definitive number that SHOULD influence game makers deciding what features to add to their games. If Microsoft only has 3 million people out there that are competing online, that seems like a problem for someone looking to dump huge amounts of money into creating an online oriented game.

If the number is low enough, it wouldn't pay you to implement online at all. Just ignore it in favor of making a better single player game or put the money in split screen functions for multiplayer, etc.

I liked this stat.

A new report from research firm Frank N. Magid Associates reveals that Xbox 360 are not only largely unaware of the console's high definition graphics capabilities, but that nearly a third of owners are unfamiliar with the Xbox Live Arcade service. The report, based on responses from 1800 households (however, only 149 of which actually own an Xbox 360), reveals that while a large number of users have purchased or tried an XBLA title, a surprising number of them are clueless about how they can get UNO, Double Dragon or Pac-Man Championship Edition on their chill white Xboxes.
Probably the same third that don't go online. :p

Then obviously the number is high enough to favor online multiplayer development as nearly every game on the 360 has some kind of online component.

I was just pointing out that it's not the only way to look at Live. At this point, I wouldn't doubt that Microsoft made more money off of the microtransactions, arcade titles, movie downloads, royalty fees, etc than the subscriptions. As I pointed out earlier, you don't need Gold to do any of those things.

Yes, but you also have the case of multiple accounts within one household.
