Microsoft still reminding customers about their DRM Reversal

Does the Xbone still require an day 1 update to enable the "reversal?"

If you are unable to connect to the internet day one, what does that mean for DRM?

Well they have to get the word out, the first impression of XBO was as an anti-consumer nightmare, and casuals who haven't heard about the 180s might need to be informed.

But it kills me how they keep trying to act like they always designed the XBO this way with the intentionally deceptive way they keep wording their PR about this shit. "WE DESIGNED OUR SYSTEM TO BE ONE OF CHOICE"... no bros, you didn't. Stop lying. Shut up and stop being dumb, nobody is falling for it, ya know?

Are you doubting the creators of DirectX for the love of GOD?

This isn't going to be a positive thing for them until we're at the point where people forget it was ever going to happen. This just keeps calling attention to the fact that they fully intended to be shitty until they learned they couldn't get away with it. This is like going "Hey, good news! We're not going to set your house on fire! You know, any more." Uhm, yay? Thanks, I guess?

Yep. Damage has been done for me (!), which is the reason why I ain't buying one.
So it's your decision if you want to "reward" them (in buying the XBone), or not. I won't. That's for sure.

And this!

I'll buy two and blame you for the second one, you can't stop me.

They still need to you know, advertise it.

What should they say instead?

This ad seems to be dishonest. The console wasn't 'designed' this way at all - it was forced to be this way by the huge consumer reaction despite MS's initial intentions.

I can pause the game!!!
wow, thanks microsoft , i'm so sorry for all the bad things i said.

Well they need to get the word out as much as possible. The fringe that still won't know after launch will put 2 and 2 together when they see a shelf of used Xbox One games at gamestop.

I agree with you. That's exactly what I said in my first sentence; they need to do this stuff because most casual consumers still don't know. First impressions are a bitch and stick with a company for a while.

My other statement is about something they most definitely don't have to do to do this effectively: lie. They keep releasing these statements alongside these informative posts about how they 'designed the Xbox One to be a console of choice" and "our system has always had the consumers in mind from day one, and we understand how important X, Y and Z is to you."

All they have to do is OMIT that bullshit entirely; just inform without the preposterous pandering nonsense.

Yeah, it does require internet during initial setup. Says in the fine prints in the bottom. Its a DRM-enabled Reversal. Hope that make sense!

"With the all new Xbox One, you can now...do the same shit you could do with your old console"

The fact that they need to put stuff like "You can trade/rent games" and "You can play offline" shows what a colossal fuck-up that original scheme was, and how badly it damaged the consumers' perception of them.

It's their fault they're in this position, but I can't blame them for trying to get this information out there. Even if it is kind of funny.
.

True, but I don't think this in itself will have any effect. A ÂŁ100 price cut might though. If they really want to have a chance of retaining their market-share, or getting anywhere close to it, that's what they need to do.

can't I do everything on that list except download/play with my 360 now?

Kind of reeks of desperation. Stuff like this makes me wonder what their pre-order numbers are really looking like.

it does. now the inclusion of the free FIFA game in EU drives that home even more.

It's a good thing that they did reverse their DRM policy and are now trying to make amends, but as others have said they shouldn't have put themselves in this position in the first place. The rumors of a DRM Xbox were heavily controversial, they should have seen the smoke.

Hopefully though this whole ordeal is a wake up call for Microsoft to get their act together so that the launch of the Xbox One goes better than its reveal.

Sony did the exact same thing.

They got a 20 minute standing ovation for it, if I recall.

Is there any tangible proof that Sony planned to implement DRM on the PS4? I mean, they must have discussed about it internally but did they plan to adopt it?
Sony didn't announce DRM policies and then backed out of it so no, they didn't do the same thing.

This is so dumb. It means they have that asterisk indefinitely and there's sure to be a little retail confusion ("it needs online?" "no... well just for like an hour upfront')

You don't think it's warranted after all they tried to do?

People that entrenched won't ever understand; Microsoft is STILL to this VERY WEEK even releasing deceptive PR or delaying or otherwise changing fundamental aspects of their XBO for launch. Look at the uproar over Major Nelson and Albert Penello's misleading and ridiculous downplaying of PS4's power with salacious and inaccurate bullshit about how to tabulate XBO's own power.

The "bash fest" - which, by the way, is nothing more than EARNED CRITICISM - won't go away until all this shit stops happening and the system stops retaining some of its critical negatives like forcing everyone to pay an extra $100 for Kinect and having every fucking thing behind a paywall as well as stop with the deceptive PR. On top of that, the XBO launch has to stop seeming like a tumultuous ship stuck in a hurricane, because they keep delaying or changing stuff that people were expecting around launch, and it's extremely frustrating.

In fact, they need to release an iconographic indicating all the shit that has been changed about the XBO post 180s. It's seriously massive. On top of that, Albert promised NeoGAF a chart indicating which Kinect voice functionality will work in what 13 countries for launch, and he has still - weeks later - not delivered on that promise.

So, yeah. Anyone who thinks this persistent criticism is now unwarranted is just refusing to acknowledge how fucked up things STILL are. To say nothing of the fact that what Microsoft did was cause a crisis of trust, and it's going to take YEARS before people fully get over it - just like it took Sony. Why should Microsoft be any different when what they were attempting to do was a trillion times worse than anything Sony was tryin' to do with PS3?

Bring me true Family Sharing across all digital Games on muiltiable xboxs and a decent price and all will be forgiven that was one of the few good features they had untill they axe it
