So how much is the new one going to cost?

Are they going to keep the price of the SurfaceRT at $349? Or go back to $499? Seems like they've painted themselves in a corner with the recent price drop.

But it's the perfect size vertically for reading PDFs etc. (I'd guess it has pretty much the same proportions as a sheet of paper). It's really just a question of what you'll use it for.
A sheet of paper has a 1.29 aspect ratio. A 4:3 screen has a 1.33 aspect ratio. A 16:9 screen has a 1.78 aspect ratio.

Funny to read that: I work with some LARGE pdf files (huge number of pages + huge pictures), and the piss poor performance of all Android tablets with them is one of the chief reasons why I want a Surface, even if Acrobat for Metro is so damn simplistic.

Been waiting for this. By the time they fixed the Stylus/Photoshop issue, it made more sense to just wait for the next Pro model.

Yeah I was waiting for the Cintiq Companion since they took so long to resolve the wintab issue but Wacom was stupid and cocked that all up with Ivy Bridge. SO it looks like I'll be getting this instead if it hits the 8gb of ram and Haswell boxes.

I still don't understand why MS is not pushing Atom styled tablets, they're the same price as RT but with full Windows 8.

Because Atom is a dog and they rather provide silky smooth performance with nearly no apps than crummy performance with all the apps.

Still, it'd be interesting to see a Surface 3 with one of those new power-sipping Intel procs for low end computers.

Just bought a Surface Pro about a month or so ago and love it. Not too upset about a new one, because this one suits my needs so perfectly. It's probably the one Microsoft product I've purchased that I really, really love (sorry, broken 360 sitting in a box under my bed!).

No its not. I have an Atom tablet...it doesn't lag. Everything in metro is as smooth as it can get.

Didn't Leveno already say they were holding fire for the next gen systems because the new intels are the ideal replacement for ARM with none of the down-sides (software support).

Feel bad for those 1st gen adopters of the ARM system - at this rate they'll never even get a youtube app.

Uhh, it's definitely a lot more narrow and tall than paper. The iPad's aspect ratio is much better for reading anything and a lot closer to normal paper.

Plus I had a Surface Pro for a short while. I know trying to hold that thing comfortably in portrait mode is a joke, never mind the aspect ratio.

OP is misleading, where are my Johanna Stern pics?

She's listening to you post.

8 giga bytes of RAM is pretty crazy since the Pro was just 4. I look forward to getting one next year. Hopefully this next model feels like a good upgrade.

I have some experience with Asus and Acer's Atom offerings and they are slow. Sure, Metro runs well and so do the most basic apps, but everything else is either noticeably slower or downright choppy. Patches and upgrades can also be fucking slow. Updating a brand new Atom tablet is an ordeal by itself.

Yeah. I need some actual power because of my line of work, but a fresh new low-power Intel CPU with integrated graphics would be fine for me otherwise.

That's cool if you're just looking at Metro, and not serious applications that actually warrant getting a full Windows 8 tablet in the first place.

I mean a lot of the malaise about netbooks toward the end of their relevance was their continued reliance on Atom. It was considered weak and this was several years ago.

They should drop desktop in future editions of Surface RT once Office "Metro" releases.

Nah, keep it in. If a user ends up on the desktop, the windows team needs to make sure that the user explicitly wanted to go to the desktop. It's a nice power-user tool--just unnecessarily easy to get to right now.

More money down the drain. For the best high-end tablet, get an iPad. Meanwhile, Lenovo's offerings are far more appealing if one is interested in a hybrid laptop-tablet.

Too bad the Surface is also a computer, which is its main grab: getting all your shit from your desktop environment and running it on the go as well as a powerful laptop, but with the flexibility of a tablet.

Call me back when iOS can run Mac apps.

Really gonna have to disagree here but it's been argued about and discussed too many times before to bother.

Looking forward to the announcement. I might be interested in the new Pro. I hope they'll show off the planned accessories (and their prices) as well. A Surface Pro with a dock and maybe a battery cover could be pretty great.

Have one of those and while I'll always choose an iPad over an Android tablet, it does not run Photoshop and ZBrush.

Needs to be keyboard cover included and a kickstand that actually works in your lap.

But the MAIN issue they need to fix is battery life which doesn't look like its gonna happen. the Ipad blows the RT out of the water in this regard.

That's is what I would like to do as well. May consider the Pro 1 depending on the price. Also fuck the haters.

There are no haters for the pro. It's a PC. Even if it get axed one of these days it will still be functional.

The RT though...I love my RT. It's the perfect travel companion I ever used. But please, don't release it @ $500 again.

I might replace my 3 year old desktop with Surface Pro 2 + Docking Station.

Same.... although I replaced my old desktop with a chromebox a year ago and got a surface rt (which I sold a few months ago in preparation for this). Chromeos is nice but very limited still. Been itching to have a "real pc" again but I need to see battery life get better and that keyboard/battery cover make a difference.

Microsoft is preparing to stick with Windows RT 8.1, although it will drop the "RT" name from the actual device.

this won't make things more confusing.

is it Windows? is it Windows lite? who knows. buy an iPad.

Looking forward to the announcement. Been waiting a year. I wanted to replace my laptop with one but nothing wrong with it. Would much rather travel with this than a 15-inch laptop though.

Too bad I need both because fuck me.

-Big laptop for comfortable office work + presentations + huge images on the go.
-Surface so I can get shit done on a cramped ass, transoceanic flight without ruining all my battery, plus funsy stuff when I'm not working.

I like the idea of the Surface Pro and I hope the new one fixes the issues that made me return the last one.

But damn dude, I really can't fathom a reason for anyone to get an RT over an iPad. It outclasses the RT in every way, unless you've got a weird fixation on a particular Metro-only app. Make it half the price of the iPad and then we just have the somewhat less clear debate about getting this dead-end platform over another similarly priced Android tablet.

The RT is better than the Ipad in everyway except battery life. You can't multitask on the Ipad you can on the RT. When I can browse the web and IM at the same time, or watch netflix and chat at the same time, or just take notes and browse at the same time then maybe the Ipad can compete. And especially with the improved multitasking in 8.1 it will be even better.

Being able to watch youtube videos, or run them in the background like on a PC while browsing other sites is amazing. Also flash works as well. Yeah IPad has more apps but i never felt the need for any since I can use pretty much any site due to the built in flash support.

If they can give this thing better battery life and cheaper price it would be pretty amazing.

I wouldn't say every way, but there are definitely some things I miss about my RT now that I have a iPad mini.

I'm bias though

I played with a pro for a few days at work for "feasibility testing" and was very underwhelmed. It's like having a desktop OS installed on a tablet. Just getting it onto the domain was a pita.
