Midair is a free-to-play first-person shooter by Archetype Studios. The game is influenced by the Tribes franchise, emphasizing freedom of movement with jetpacks and skiing, while also featuring large open maps and vehicles.

Midair features similar mechanics from the Tribes franchise such as jetpacks and a mechanic the developers call skating, which allows the player to glide across the terrain. Players will have the choice of using either Light, Medium, or Heavy armors. Weapons include a Spinfusor-like weapon currently referred to as the Ring Launcher, as well as a Grenade Launcher and Chain Gun. A Mortar and Sniper Rifle are featured as well. The developers have stated that they are aiming to include most of the traditional weapons from the Tribes franchise, as well as some new ones.

A 3/4/5 weapons system similar to Starsiege: Tribes and Tribes 2 is currently implemented; 3 weapons for Light armor, 4 weapons for Medium armor, and 5 weapons for Heavy armor. No automatic health regeneration is present at the moment or currently planned. Players will be able to equip certain abilities and items, such as deployable sensors and turrets, or packs that give players more ammo, increased energy regeneration, cloaking abilities and more. Vehicles include a basic air fighter, a bomber which supports up to three players, and a tank which supports two players.

Game modes currently include Capture the Flag, Light Capture the Flag, Arena, and Rabbit.

Midair will feature both a server browser and match-making system. The developers have also emphasized the importance of user-made content, and will include map making tools for the community and a system to deliver community maps sometime after release. Public matches will see team-sizes similar to Tribes: Ascend's 16v16, while competitive team sizes will vary between 5v5 and 11v11, depending on the game mode.

Definitely looks like classic Tribes going by the vid, core mechanics like skiing and all too, so that's neat. First thing that always comes to mind for Tribes or Tribesalikes is "but how is the netcode," since that can be tough to get right when people are careening past each other at 200 mph and trying to land mid-air disc shots. Interested to hear any impressions from folks!

VGTG

And yeah netcode is super important, especially in a game with fully simulated projectiles. It's horrifying how many projectiles got *lost* in Tribes:Ascend above 80 ping. The SMG gun that sniper had was about half as effective as at 40ms.

I've heard it's more tribe 2ish than 1ish. I going to download it this week though... I put 3 years into tribes 1, and a significant amount of time into Tribes Ascend too.

My friend and I were huge Tribes fans so I know the feeling. From what I know, this is a team of Tribes vets from an old forum we used to frequent called Tribal War. I'll be playing tonight I hope.

I have it downloaded, just haven't been able to check it out. I hope this is better than that last free to play one.

Ascend wasnt bad but I always felt something was off.

Honestly the mod community made tribes what it was, without mods the game is missing a key component. I say that as a mostly base guy.

I played some of this with a friend today. Only had a fleeting experience with Ascend, but it feels sufficiently Tribes-y based on my memory of it.

The mechanics are great fun, though it's lacking a certain layer of polish. You can't party up with friends, and you can stack up multiple 'quit to desktop?' popups if you mash esc on the skill tree screen.

Learning about the in-depth quick chat has been very entertaining too. VGV!

I haven't had a chance to download it yet. Does it have a VGS chat? That's crucial lol

It does have VGS, but it's just a Growl instead of Shazbot. More games need to rip off this system.
Coming off Ascend this game feels very off to me. But I understand the physics are more like the older ones.
