Call Nintendo support, they might be able to transfer all your stuff to your new console if you pester them enough.

Now that Paper Mario, Fire Emblem, and Code of Princess are confirmed for release and the 3DSXL rumors were false, I think it's time that I finally pick up a 3DS. I've wanted the purple one since it debuted at E3 2010, and it looks like it's no longer available through Amazon first party so I worry that it's a limited run model. For anyone who owns this color, I thought I'd just ask about how it looks in person before taking the plunge while I can still get it elsewhere. Basically:
a.) matte or glossy?
b.) Barney the Dinosaur purple or deep royal purple?
I can't seem to find any high-res pictures with good lightning of the model online, so if any of you could help me out, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Amazon doesn't sell 3DSes directly (in the US). Best time to get one was a week or so ago when Target/Best Buy were giving out a 20 dollar gift card with a purchase. And 3DSXL may exist, but simply wasnt meant to be an E3 announcement.
I bought the purple during the Target deal and it's glossy like the others. And yeah, it's a nasty fingerprint magnet. As for the color its deep. It seems to be darker at the front of the 3DS and gets gradually lighter towards the back. It's definitely my favorite of the choices we have here in the US, but I would have definitely bought a white one if it were a choice.
It's glossy and pretty dark. Darker than the original model prior to launch. I'm really glad I switched over to purple from my finger print magnet Aqua Blue. My wife has Red, which is an excellent color for it as well.

Oh, right, I forgot that they're constantly "under review" or something like that. Fortunately missing that deal is no concern to me, ordering online with no sales tax will end up being about the same difference. Funny thing about the 3DSXL is that even if it was real, I'd probably still go with this because color is as important as form factor to me. I know that's kind of crazy.
Apparently we share taste in 3DSes because I've been lusting for the Ice White model since it was announced for Europe and couldn't believe that it was never released here considering how Nintendo marketed the white DS Lite as the "standard" model years ago. The purple 3DS is more than enough consolation.
Glossy and dark were what I was hoping for. I hate fingerprints as much as anyone else, but matte purple just looks cheap when I imagine it. Thanks for the link to the unboxing video; strangely enough the person in the video describes the color as "Barney purple" which was my exact example of being too light a shade, but it certainly doesn't look that light in the video. I think that I'm convinced to get one now.

I dont think matte is an option on any 3DS. I wish it was because I loved that about my old DSi. No fingerprints and it had a nice grip to it.

I made the switch to a red DS when the mario kart bundle came out in nov of 05. 6 months later the Lite came out and i switched too. Years later, i jumped onto the DSi train too and that was great. But Christ almighty, the XL was just a beauty. That is what i will wait for, even though this amazing color will taunt me so.

I finally received my purple 3DS yesterday, and it's a sexy beast. And, like other people, I've discovered that it's surprisingly hard to capture the color accurately in photos. Without flash it looks like a bright grape purple, but with flash it almost looks cobalt. I managed to get a single good picture that I think accurately approximates the color of the system for the benefit of those who, like myself, were on the fence because there are no good pictures of it out there:

It's already very fingerprinty after only a few hours of play, but I just try my best not to notice, hah.

I bought mine today too, and I echo your statement. Its color is truly beautiful, and it feels great handling it. Feels powerful when you hold it.
Damn, I came here to post nearly exactly the same thing. You sum it up pretty well.
I just bought mine today too (Official GAF buys Purple 3DSs day?) and I haven't seen a single photo or video online that captures it's colour in person, it just looks so off in media. It just shimmers in sunlight, but varies a lot because of the surface of the top of it depending on what light you put it under. I definitely understand the Midnight Purple name because of how it looks under artificial light or in a shadow where it has a very dark grape look.
Heck, I don't even think your picture captures it exactly but it's closer than most. I tried taking pictures but they all come off completely off. You really have to see it in person to get a good idea.
I've found that the corners of the 3DS dig into my palms so I'm probably going to have to buy grips, but it's pretty substantial and weighty for its size Though in a sense it still feels compact after Vita being my only handheld for a few months, hah.
My first game is OoT 3D and I was sold on the 3D surprisingly quickly. I totally don't mind it being less powerful if it's going to provide interesting visual experiences like this.
I'm really surprised at how different the color is depending on the light source. Like you said, sunlight causes it to shimmer, bright white light like a camera flash makes it look bluish, lamplight makes it look like cheap plastic purple/amethyst/fuchsia, and the edges of the screen even become a translucent purple when held in front of light at different angles. Really, the picture that best captures what it looks like is still the first picture of the prototype purple 3DS from E3 2010.

I believe so. I've played via download play locally before, but I haven't had a chance to go online with it. Nintendo DS never supported WPA (while DSiWare and 3DS support it) so I can't try it at all.
hmm can't you just turn off the password for your wifi?

That's too much BS to deal with tbh, If I really feel the urge to play a game of Tetris DS, Mario Kart DS, or Metroid Prime Hunters I could just toss in Tetris Axis, Mario Kart 7, or a shooter on a console/PC.
I know, I'm lazy as fuck.

Glad to see you picked it up. I enjoy it so much more than my Aqua Blue. My wife has a Red one, which is another great color. The only color I have yet to see in person is the Pink unit.
