1 divided by 3 equals 0.3333 (repeating), 0.3333 (repeating) times 3 equals 0.999999999 (repeating), therefore 0.9999999 (repeating) equals 1

you don't need to do silly division to demonstrate this;

if 0.9999... does not equal to 1, what number comes between the two? in other words, two unequal numbers should have a non-zero difference.

edit: fuck, beaten.

The T and H form a table and chair.

That's no table and a chair. It's a sink, crapper and toilet paper roll.

No, no, no! The knife goes to the right, because you hold the knife on your right hand! HA!
If you eat holding the knife on your left hand, you're a freak of nature. An abomination!

Wow. Turns out I've been using knives in the proper hand all along; everyone else I know is just a savage.

I don't even get why there is a "proper" way to use a knife. Its a fucking knife, it cuts things, why the fuck does it matter which hand it is used with?

If 0.999..... repeating (as in, infinite nines) are different numbers, there must be some other decimal number in between them. You can't have 0.999.....9991 or 0.9999 ...9993 or whatever because there is no end to the infinite repeating nines. Therefore 0.999... =1

No.

no matter how many times you repeat .999 it will never ever be equal to one.
if it was equal to 1 then it would be 1. Numbers are distinct.

Only thing is that the difference between .9999(repeating) and 1 becomes smaller and smaller but they are still never equal.

There's a proper way to everything. At least...that's what some people think. I only hold mine like that because I'm left-handed, and in my parents culture it's wrong to do anything with the left hand. Go figure.

There's always one.

This does not reflect how mathematics works.

If 1 and 0.999... are not equal, what does 1 - 0.999... give you?

lim 1/(10^n) as n-> infinity

And yes that limit is zero, so .999... = 1.

Here's my problem with it: It's a mathematical proof to deal with inaccuracies in the decimal system, apparently there are other number systems where .999.... does not equal 1, and they are just as valid (thanks wiki).

It's basically a whole lot of time and effort to deal with: "'Dat 'dere decimal system don't do 'dem fractions so good."

Neat, the hyper-real system has a way of dealing with infinitesimally small numbers, such that 1-.999... has an answer. Not going to take the time to learn it though.

Because people who know the right way will be able to tell that you're a grungy orphan raised by wolves.

ex. I bet people who were never taught to chew with their mouths closed aren't bothered by people chewing with their mouths open (rage).

I learned that in etiquette class in 8th grade.
Still use it to this day (in formal occasions, because who really gives a damn otherwise).

There are a lot of very clever sports logos out there. One of my favorites has always been the now defunct Hartford Whalers -

They got an H, a W, AND a whale's tail in there.

The old Milwaukee Brewers logo was pretty cool as well -

I know and understand the setting of silverware, but when it comes to actually using the utensils (I'm right handed mind you) the knife goes into the left hand. You know that fork that you used to pin down that steak you're about to cut? Guess what, it's already in the hand that you eat it with. From what I've seen, most people that eat with their right hand do the following:

1.) Cut food with knife in right hand
2.) Place said knife down
3.) Switch fork from left hand to right hand
4.) Proceed to eat

I just skip steps 2 and 3. On a side note of etiquette, when you are done with your plate knife and fork should be parallel at 5 o'clock and if you're still eating then cross them, as in don't touch my fucking plate.

That's the American style. Elsewhere, proper etiquette is to always hold the fork in your left hand. Also, in American you can't use a knife to help get wily peas onto the fork tines, everywhere else this is okay.

It's divergent, not crossed; you want to look *through* the image, not in *front* of it.

Real Number system has some bugs in it.

Question

.9999.... is equal to .3333..... x 3 right?

1 - .333..... = ? Shouldn't the answer to this terminate in a 7?

Then if you take .333.... away from that answer what do you get?

And then one more time.. what do you get?

the whole ..... notation is so screwy that is something well beyond the "real number system". It's a shorthand bastardization going from fractional notation to indefinite decimal notation, and then trying to use that as a valid math proof.

No! It wouldn't terminate at all. You'd approximate stepwise maybe, and your intermediate answers would terminate in a seven, but as you approximate further, you get very close to 2/3, which, as it turns out, doesn't terminate in a seven, but instead doesn't ever terminate. It is a very long number. Written out, it takes infinite space and neither terminates in a 6 nor a 7.

I almost see something... dirty happening there. Is that what I'm supposed to see, or is this a test?
