Minecraft (PC) hits 20 million copies sold

Deserves its crap-ton of sales.

What a fantastic game for children and adults alike - encourages creativity and damn, have there been some amazing creations that came out of it.

Congratulations to Mojang. I never 'understood' Minecraft, but my nephews and nieces love it. More power to them.

Yeah - it's one of those games which I never got into it, but it's a game that I'm happy to succeed. It's a nice and constructive game and the fact that it is very popular with kids makes me quite happy it exists and it is as popular as it is.

1 million sales in 3 months......almost 4 years after it originally launched

Minecraft is insane. Great sales for a great game though

Why is the game still $34 CAD on PC/Mac? It's $19.99 or free on everything else.

Minecraft isn't free on anything I don't think? Pocket Edition is $6.99

Sucks about the Canadian pricing though :(

Is this the first game to sell over a million 4-6 years after release?

4 years = 1.0 release
6 years = alpha release

whichever is considered the official release.

Hopefully with MS they optimise the game on PC a bit more, I get some random frame drops for no reason, maybe they will release a DX12 version.

It's a perfect mix of being extremely popular with children and being a game that parents are happy to let their children play. I'm always glad to see it continue to be successful.

Nice... But how long until they rewrite it into a language that isn't Java? Also when do we get more animals. I'm surprised we haven't got birds or fish yet.

Jeez. I remember when it was $10 and I didn't grab it because my PC sucked. I don't have that issue anymore and it's $26.95? Can't afford that right now, lol. I'll get it eventually though. :P

Birds were put forward as a suggestion on on of the mc forums, IIRC. With egg drops. And/or feather drops.

Yeah but, what do you do? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Seriously though I still have no idea if there is an actual goal in this game or if it's just basically a virtual lego playset with monsters and such. Like, do you make maps for other people? I kinda missed the boat on MC even tho I like the idea of level creation in stuff like LBP or Mario Maker.

There's a million and one different ways to play.

There are mods for fucking everything.

It's the ultimate sandbox game. Nothing gets close when you start factoring in the insane mods people have produced.

Still agree that it is the most important games since the original Mario. From the massive influence on an entire generation of new gamers to how so many components of it are now in everything from indie one-off games to AAA franchises. Hell, it even charts every week in Japan, where apparently video games are dead.

I think I bought this for like $3 when it was pre-alpha.

I thought it was amazing and everyone mocked me that saw me playing it at work because it looked stupid.

Who are you mocking now, coworkers!

Probably still me.

Actually, I think I made the first topic about Minecraft on GAF, and I got mocked in that thread too!

One thing that I don't think Minecraft gets enough credit for is popularizing the survival genre that is currently in vogue in the world of Indie PC games.

You do whatever you want really. Explore, build, fight stuff, spelunk. Start playing it and you'll (hopefully) get the idea. It's definitely not a game for everyone. Some people can't get over the fact that the game doesn't set objectives for you.

Yep. anytime you hear the word, "crafting" with new games, it is probably a pretty short connect the dots back to Minecraft. Of course crafting systems existed before Minecraft, but it was no where near as omnipresent pre-Minecraft.

Just going on steam and typing "craft"....I'd say yeah, minecraft gets PLENTY of recognition for starting the survival craze.

I am mostly referring to places like GAF, where half the posts in any Minecraft thread are people saying that they have never played the game or don't see the appeal. Chances are, everyone has played a game that took inspiration from Minecraft.

But the definition of a game is that it has a goal! This is like the Calvinball of videogames.

It is the children who are wrong.

There isn't any one goal though. Right now I guess my "goal" in the game is to build up my current village (build some defensive walls, some towers, etc) and eventually build a road connecting it to my old village for easier travel. Some day I want to build a rail system for even faster travel.
