It's always so shocking to hear someone died of cancer. You haven't heard a thing about that person/celebrity in so long, possibly just due to them fading into obscurity, all the while they've likely been suffering with their diagnosis and illness for years.

wat

She was 31 when she was doing her psychic show

Need to research her sometime soon... Most of us that are old enough remember those commercials, and I remember her well. I just never looked into her. Would be interesting to see how she had the business set up and how everything worked.

But yeah I remember her thinking she was in her 50's back in the 90's.

Probably pretended to be older to make the con more believable.

Billy Mays death actually hit me. Loved watching that man so much and I went out and bought Oxy Clean and Kaboom because of him. Nobody since has had that kind of persuasion to get me to buy things.

I know, he was incredible! His (along with Anthony Sullivan) super short-lived show Pitchmen is worth a watch if you can manage to find the episodes.

So because there are worse people out there, she is not scummy?

It's sad that she is dead and she certainly does not deserve it, but there are also people far more worthy of my sympathy.

Yeah. The whole "worse people exist" argument has always struck me as intellectually lazy. As if anybody who isn't Hitler or Stalin is somehow above reproach.

If someone didn't personally harm me directly then I shouldn't care is what some seem to be saying in here. I'm sure you apply this to all things right?

She made a living off of taking advantage of of people that couldn't afford it, much like all the faith based hucksters like Falwell and Jim Baker. Just another criminal with a PR manager.

Cancer is awful but I have no sympathy for her.

No one said this.

Stay focused on your real enemies and bullshit artists, though. Unless Miss Cleo was the one who got you when you were young and broke and made you old and broke, then by all means, enjoy the karma.
What exact focus on enemies is being lost just because people say that psychic hotlines are scummy?

People downplayingher role in the fraud that is phone clairvoyants are bumming me out

She never went for her million dollars from the James Randi Foundation back in the day. :( All she needed to provide was one demonstration of psychic powers and boom! An easy million dollars.

Such a shame. :(

Yep. I didn't see her death coming though. Haven't heard from Miss Cleo in a decade, but those infomercials bring me back. Surprised to learn she was born in california. What a great actress she was
No... No she wasn't. As a Jamaican, it's always been kind of a joke to us that ppl believed she was one of us. Her horrible accent and just the way she carried herself was not convincing at all

For those saying what she did was no big deal:

The FTC made them erase 500 million dollars in debt owed by customers and pay a 5 million dollar fine.

https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/pre...forgive-approximately-500-million-outstanding

This is in addition to several more hundreds of millions at the state level.

She was by no means a small time "hustler". She was the face of a multi billion dollar fraud empire preying on the poor and uneducated.

shes a con artist, a crooked person who swindled millions of gullible idiots. we shouldn't care about her.

You do realize that she was basically just an actor and didn't actually run the "Psychic Network" or saw any real money that came from it? I don't really understand why people are calling her a con artist, people that called in didn't even talk to her and they what basically paid for.

She was hired to play a part and she did it damn well, enough so that people still remember her all these years later from those goofy ass commericals. RIP Cleo.

RIP. Had no idea she was in VC.

Cool, she was Auntie Poulet.

lol, nobody was forced to call in just as nobody is forced to buy Joel Osteen's 32nd rehashed faith-based self-help book.

So, it's ok to advance the cause of fraudsters so long as you are low level and only doing your job?

I'm not sure about her specifically, but every other psychic I've seen on TV were the people who prey on literally those most desperate, weakest, suffering from incurable diseases. They take money from them and give them lies in return. The worst kind of con artists.

After reading this thread, I don't feel so bad about making fun of her dying. ALways just thought of her like a Billy Mays-esque front person.

Weird. I just randomly thought about her a few days ago after forgetting she existed for like a decade.

I caught an Alakazam in Pokemon GO and named it "Mr. Cleo."

When Bernie Madoff dies, will his thread be filled with people congratulating him on his hustle, too?

you magnificent bastard.

RIP to the person who scammed countless people out of money by preying on the loss of loved ones.

At least she wasn't John Edward, who still today passes his cold reading "talking to your dead loved ones" bullshit off as real. At least Miss Cleo's commercials had "For Entertainment Purposes Only" stamped right on the bottom of them.

Technically she was just the actress hired by the Psychic Readers Network to star in the commercials. I don't think she received much of the money made by the company. She still agreed to take the part, though.

You know she was just a hired actress right? She was the Colonel Sanders to that psychic company. She later cashed in the recognition like Kevin Butler did, but the first con idea was not hers.

She knew she was just an actress too, hence the problem.

Miss Cleo was the name used by a scam artist who preyed on the gullibility of desperate people for a living. She tried to have a legitimate career first and failed. She actually started a production company to produce plays, and coincidentally she apparently used the excuse of "she had bone cancer and her medical bills are too high" to not pay some cast members. I hate psychics.

I'm not saying "Good job, cancer!" or anything, but it just seems odd that this is even all that newsworthy (not just on GAF). I mean when Billy Mays died he was actively doing commercials and was somewhat of a meme. This would be like the shamwow guy dying in like ten years and people taking notice for some reason.

i knew someone that used to work for a psychic network. He was given a phone box and plugged it in when he wanted to work as a "psychic." After laying out tarot cards he would do a quick interpretation and then basically just have conversations with very lonely people. From how he put it he was "a friend for hire."
