FF7 scarred me forever with missables and now I need a guide on my hand to make sure I press a button right or talk to a person at the correct time in case I missed something important.
My only play through of it with no guide took me 24 hours to complete. 24 hours for a supposedly 80 hours game just showed you how much content I missed.
I missed lots of side stories that build the characters and all my limit breaks are on level 2. I didn't even had the chance to use
Omnislash before Sephiroth
. Chocobo race? What's that? I think my birdy is still a yellow one.
I don't have all the time in the world so I can't do new game+ for a 80hrs game so I must make sure my only playthrough is as complete as it is and I get to enjoy all the content the game provide me with in the shortest time. People say following a walkthrough spoiled the game but my experience with FF7 states otherwise. I had tons of fun following walkthroughs for Xenogears and other FF because I am sure I would totally miss Emeralda's sidequest or the heart warming scene of Vivi visiting his grandpa otherwise.
I have to use guides for games like Dark Souls because if I miss collectables in games it drives me crazy, being a perfectionist is really annoying sometimes. I'm completely incapable of actually playing some of the old collect-a-thon games like DK64 and Banjo-Kazooie.
Don't even get me started on Excalibur II. I keep myself sane by reminding myself that *theoretically* I could leave my console on for 2 years straight to reset the timer. That way I can justify it as a non-missable in my head.
But when it comes to RPGs, there's a whole rabbit hole you can fall into. Max stats, 99 of every item, etc.

The biggest question is, did you jump the rope 1000 times?
The older I got, the less bullshit I could tolerate so I just cheat. 12hrs? Time reset, I could leave it for 2 years anyway so I am just shortening the wait! Jump rope 1000 times but only could managed 300 after hours of trying? Cheat. I have no qualms in using gameshark when games threw me annoying irrelevant bullshit like that. I only use it for side stuff that has no relevance to the main game so that's my justification.
I never go out of my way to look for collectibles, unless an open world game clearly marks it on a map (like Far Cry).
Other than that, I don't pay attention to them, and I definitely have no idea if they are missable.
If the game design demands that missables exist, so be it.
There should not be a "Law of Collectibles" in game design. It should be a concept which is entirely open for each dev to interpret or reimagine as they choose.
I like looking for collectibles, but I absolutely hate missables, especially in very long games that I know I won't start over before a while. Either I end up pissed and stop looking after them at all, or I feel obligated to open guides to make sure I don't miss anything important, and I hate that even more in a first playthrough.
I like to 100% my games, so yes I find missable stuff a bit annoying...
And as much as I like to 100%, I guess when my studies are over I'll have less time to play so I probably won't bother to collect everything anymore :/
I actually enjoy hearing about collectables I missed. Collectables make one person's gameplay experience unique from someone else's and I dig that. It also gives me an excuse to replay the game for 100%.
