Mixed Martial Arts - the Official Discussion & General Info

Great news for UFC, yet another fighter has to withdraw from 108. Gabriel Gonzaga won't make his scheduled fight vs Junior dos Santos because of a staph infection. If I'm anybody on that fight card I'm staying in a panic room for the next month.

Future headline: Rashad Evans withdraws from UFC 108, stuck in panic room and can't get out.

It's true though, commentating is better when guys that have trained mixed martial arts are commentating. Not when they are as bias as Mir but Rogan is just as bias and knows little about anything other than bjj. I know they won't fire the dynamic dorks but it would be great if they brought in guest commentators that were knowledgeable in the styles of the main eventers to start.

The Voice (minus the repetitive catchphrases) + a good sidekick is the way to go. He does play by play really well, has loads of experience in fight commentary, and actually reads up a ton on what's happening in the fight scene. Just wish he would drop the lame shit and not be partnered up with people like Guy Mezger (though he's been improving, I guess) or Mike Kogan ("OMG THE JUDGES...THE JUDGES...THE JUDGES").

I'll take Joe over some fighter trying to explain every detail of a fight to me like I'm retarded. Not only do I see everything that they do I usually see it long before them.

Yeah, the UFC team most of all is inoffensive, generally. Bad commentary can end up pissing me off and detracting from the fights. Outside of a few annoyances like Shonie Carter being mentioned every time there's a spinning backfist or Joe sometimes being clearly biased/retarded ("BJ'S GONNA GAS ANY SECOND NOW AND KENNY WILL GO IN FOR THE KILL" x100), they usually don't detract from the experience.

I liked Bas when I had a free month of HDNet :lol

I can't stand Bas now :/

He's basically a parody of himself now. Back in the Pride days he just acted naturally, but now he's aware of the things people thought were funny about his commentary and plays them up awkwardly. Watching the first few Dream events was extremely painful.

I wish they were unoffensive to me. Lately they just make me feel dumber having to listen to them. Goldie is still clueless about mma despite years commentating and Rogan does the thinking for you as he forces his opinions down everyone's throat over and over.

I find Rogan pretty inoffensive in a category of pretty bad commentators overall. At least he has the latitude to occasionally go off the UFC script. Goldie is fucking retarded, and the shill besides. He grates on me.

Speaking via RedeTV, Machida on his UFC 104 fight with Rua:

“I think I was superior from round one to four, actually trying to finish the fight, and I slightly lost the fifth round. I think most of the people thought I won. Only the MMA forums insist on all of this controversy.”

i still have yet to see this fight, anywhere online to watch it? if anderson AND machida say he won, he won.

You haven't seen the fight, but because Machida (who got the shady win) and Anderson Silva (who trains with Machida) think that Machida won, "he won"? Yeah, that's smart.

That makes 3 people who believe he won the fight now. The tide is turning folks... next up, Machida's dad will weigh in.

i bet dana now wishes he didn't retire chuck lidell. he coulda had him fill in and headline a ppv. heck, another lidell/couture, lidell/ortiz, would sell a ton of ppv's.

Joe Stevenson vs George Sotiropoulos in negotiations for UFC 110.

Link

Very interesting match. George's BJJ has been extremely slick against lower level opponents, but this will be a major test for him.

Damn that would be alright, im thinking of going to 110. George has been good against lower level guys, his fight with Dent was alright but showed his striking needs a fair bit of work still and i dont think he has knock out power in them....... second round tapout if he wins, first round TKO if he looses.

110 looks to be a pretty good card though, usually events like these fuck Aussies over and just have the dregs doing stuff.

Oh wow. That should be a good fight.

Wow, the Palin "gotcha media/blogger defense".

Every time Machida opens his mouth about this fight I like him less and less.

What's up with Brazilian fighters and staph? They don't clean their mats or something? :/

Not Brazilian. (Mayhem Miller after his decision loss to Jake "Lay-N-Pray" Shields)

That's an awesome matchup. Gonna be pulling for George but it's tough to say how he will stack up against a talented opponent. Here's hoping he takes it to the ground fast. His standup last fight was ugly.

So...perhaps this has been discussed before but have you ever seen the drawings of Fedor Emelianenko?

http://www.mmaroot.com/fedor-emelianenkos-drawings-picture-gallery/

And then...he just showed up to a press event in a Daffy Duck sweater/pants combo

http://www.cagepotato.com/fedor-emelianenko-celebrates-ratings-milestone-unbelievable-new-sweater

That's a little...odd right?

In other news, there are reports that his Brett Rogers fight might be the most watched MMA event of all time worldwide. Do what you do, Fedor.

Bullshit!

http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news?slug=dm-mmatopten122107&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

Not sure I understand Japanese TV ratings, but if the #1 fight on that list got 54 million viewers with a 42.5 rating, then the half K-1/half MMA bout between Bob Sapp and Jerome LeBanner and also the Ken Kaneko/Krazy Horse fight each got about 35 million viewers in Japan alone.

In fact, every MMA match on that list would best the claimed 25 million viewers by M-1.

Nevermind the fact that, being a press release by M-1, those numbers are probably bullshit anyway.

:lol

Maybe hes the Michael Jackson of MMA....... or likes Furries.

Or does it for his kid.

It really pisses me off how boxing can come together and negotiate and set a date for Mayweather vs Pacquiao but we can not get Fedor vs Brock in MMA. *sigh*

You really need to think about all the counterexamples to this to understand how boxing is in the crapper comparatively. But I will admit, this is the one fight I'm more interested in seeing than Machida/Rua. At least live.
