The push to legalize mixed martial arts in New York is now being led by the states top official.
Governor David Paterson unveiled a state budget proposal Tuesday that includes a bill that would nullify a 13-year-old ban on MMA in the Empire State as a way of raising sorely needed revenue.
Currently, 40 States safely regulate the sport of mixed martial arts and enjoy local and statewide economic benefits associated with the conduct of mixed martial arts events, reads a summary from Patersons office of his revenue proposals. While New Yorks ban on professional combative sports would be removed, conduct of the sport would be carefully regulated.
Patersons proposal means that legalization of MMA will be taken up as part of the annual state budget process, which has to be completed by April 1. The timeline is much stricter than it would be if an individual legislator proposed it.
If the Assembly passes the bill by April 1, Marc Ratner, the UFCs Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, said that it could take five to six months for the New York State Athletic Commission to get up to speed and the earliest a MMA event could be held in New York would be fourth quarter of this year.

Bloodyelbow.com has a good summary.yacobod said:i'm at work, how did the brock/dana press conference go on espn this morning?
UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar confirmed on Wednesday that he's completely recovered from a severe abdominal ailment and is targeting a return to MMA competition this summer.
Lesnar, who has been out of action since July due to the illlness, made the announcement alongside UFC President Dana White during a morning appearance on ESPN's "SportsCenter."
White said plans to have Shane Carwin fight Frank Mir for an interim title at UFC 111 in March would go on and that the winner will face Lesnar in a title unification bout later this year. White also said the winner of a scheduled bout between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez could be tabbed for the title fight in the event of injury to the other fighters.
White characterized Lesnar's recovery as "a miracle."
"(Doctors) basically said 'You got a lottery ticket,' " White said. "'We can't believe that you didn't need surgery.' "
In his first interview since his career was sidelined by a severe case of diverticulosis an intestinal illness that caused a hole to develop in his stomach Lesnar said he was "devastated" when he had to pull out of his first scheduled title defense against Carwin last year. After seeking multiple medical opinions, Lesnar said he opted not to have surgery that would have "pretty much ended (his) career," instead waiting to see if the illness would clear up on its own.
"I take my hat off to the doctors that pretty much saved my life and my career ...," Lesnar said. "I didn't want to (have surgery). If I could beat the odds, I was going to do everything in my power to do that."
Lesnar said he lost 40 pounds as a result of the sickness, but has gained it back through training. A follow-up appointment with doctors on Jan. 5 revealed no traces of the sickness, Lesnar said.
"A miracle," Lesnar said. "They were dumbfounded. They couldn't find any signs of any problem in my stomach. I actually had to go back to the doctor yesterday to get another CT scan on my stomach because I still can't believe it."
The former NCAA national champion and WWE wrestler said there would be no lingering effects and no health risks assocaited with a return to the Octagon.

Anyway, good to see that he beat the odds with his medical problems. That's a hell of a thing, being that close to a colostomy.

UFC Fight Night 21: Kenny Florian vs. Takanori Gomi
1/21/2010 9:30 AM ET By Michael David Smith
The UFC debut of former Pride lightweight champion Takanori Gomi is tentatively scheduled for UFC Fight Night 21 on March 31 in North Carolina, with Kenny Florian penciled in as Gomi's opponent.
ESPN's MMA Live, on which Florian is an analyst, reported the fight Thursday.
If Gomi wins, he would likely get the next shot at the UFC lightweight championship, which will be contested between B.J. Penn and Frank Edgar in April. Gomi was the Pride champion when the UFC purchased Pride, and the UFC said at the time that it wanted to unify the UFC and Pride belts. That didn't quite go as planned, and there really is no linear Pride lightweight champion anymore (you could argue that the linear Pride lightweight title belongs to Tatsuya Kawajiri), but in any event, the UFC would love to promote a Gomi-Penn rematch.
However, Florian would have to be considered a significant favorite to beat Gomi, who hasn't looked like the Fireball Kid of the Pride days in several years. Florian vs. Gomi will be an interesting fight, but it will probably be a fight that demonstrates how far Gomi has fallen from the days when he was the second-best lightweight in the world.
poor gomi. Even at gomi's peak flo would be a tough match up with his jitz and iron chin.dem said:Gomi vs Florian on free tv??

im still confused as to why they even signed gomi. i just dont see the upside? maybe they are paying better than japan right now?Asbel said:poor gomi. Even at gomi's peak flo would be a tough match up with his jitz and iron chin.

Same reason they picked up Kang, Nakamura, Gono, etc I suppose. Just throw them in the mix and let them sink or swim.mrbagdt said:im still confused as to why they even signed gomi. i just dont see the upside? maybe they are paying better than japan right now?
Well, anyone can have a puncher's chance and Gomi hits hard but BJ has a good chin, has never been knocked down, is faster and is a much more skilled striker than Gomi.Fifty said:Well if Gomi magically turns into the old Gomi, they've got a fighter who could pose a threat standing up against BJ..but that's a long shot.

Feel like I'm in bizarro land where Gomi hasn't accomplished more in MMA striking than anyone else in the history of the lightweight division.

Alright, I'll take that back as an exaggeration. Rewatched gomi/pulver and gomi wasn't as wild as I remember and definitely more motivated. But also looking back at Gomi's record, Pulzer and Alzeredo are the only 2 great strikers I see from that period that Gomi beat.EviLore said:*Much* more skilled striker than (prime/motivated) Gomi? Shogun said:"I hadnt heard anything about it before. Truth is that I signed the contract for May 1st and didnt know of the possibility of it being on the 8th. The fight is still far off. For now Ill just keep training, but when it gets closer to the date Ill start working harder."
Theres always anticipation, especially since Lyoto is a top guy. But its all about training a lot to keep calm.
Shogun said:The fight between Anderson and Belfort will be between two experienced guys who are good strikers. They know each other well, because theyve trained together. I think Anderson is more favored, but theres no telling who will win. It will be a great fight.
