What is hands down the coolest, most impressive looking martial art that one can learn in the shortest amount of time?

No super effective krav maga or anything, just something really fancy.

What is this, 1993? Get outta here

hey guys just wondering if someone could give me a run down of the mma competitions at present... so i see k1 is mainly kickboxing (circa 2005 and the OP lol) and pride which i knew of and obviously ufc... so what about strike force?

what about the others like strikeforce and any other new ones? Which one has the most weight? Best fighters? Do some of the better fighters move around cause they can't get the fights they want?

Pardon the ignorance but ive only really watched ufc on dvd on and off for the past few years and only have just started watching the more recent ones.

-UFC bought Pride and killed it, the promoters created a new Japanese promotion called DREAM and you can catch their events on HDNet

-Bellator is a tournament based promotion that just started its 2nd season last Thursday and will be having an event every Thursday night on Fox Sports Net (whenever your local affiliate wants to fit it in, check your listings)

-Strikeforce is quickly approaching the UFC in terms of the quality of fights (presentation however is still amateurish) and they have an EPIC lineup this Saturday night on CBS that is a definite must see (they go back and forth between CBS and Showtime)

-K-1 just started their 2010 GPs a couple weeks ago and you can catch their events on HDNet as well, go to HDNetFights.com for a schedule (as well as for DREAM)

so ufc got all the money now? Do some of the top fighters, which I have never heard of watching ufc, choose not to fight there? i figured they had all the money but seem to have problems with talent... and apparently there is talent at these tournaments?

There is a lot of talent out there, and it's growing. UFC has the lion's share. But Strikeforce has a lot of great talent, including arguably the best in Fedor. You certainly can't sleep on Dream/WVR or small shows like Bellator either. More and more people train in MMA at a younger age.

If you want a (not very) brief history of the modern MMA world, read through this thread. I actually started skimming through some of the earlier posts yesterday by accident. I didn't realize I was on page one at first until I saw posts that just made no sense. After that, I got a bit curious and read through the first handful of pages. Hilarious to look back on everybody talking about how UFC didn't have any good fighters, how they were clearly outclassed by Pride which folded within a year or so of the thread starting. One of the best running topics of discussion was about how Cro Cop would decimate the UFC heavyweight division (he went on to lose in his second fight to a head kick by Gabriel Gonzaga which tore Cro Cop's ankle and apparently broke his soul).

Amazing how much the landscape of the sport has changed in under five years. Though I found myself most amazed by the things that haven't changed. Mainly "Fedor is the best fighter on the planet" and "Fedor might end up in the UFC soon, but probably not" :lol

Personally I only really got into MMA at the start of last year, but immersed myself so much into watching every fight I could find online that I got a good idea of who the great fighters were at various points in the past decade. Seeing discussions from those days with the knowledge of what's happened since was great and gave me a bit of a different outlook on the things I already knew, and some things I didn't.

i was watching dvds at around the early 30 ufc mark so ive seen alot of fights but yeah didnt really think to look outside of ufc (also the ufc was pretty much the only thing i could get my hands on, but i also favoured it as the other one at the video store seemed more amateur)

i just had no idea about strikeforce, akoi, fedor etc etc and since they dont fight in the ufc i assumed perhaps ufc was being challenged or had problems with keeping the best fighters

The UFC has about 80% of the consensus top 10 fighters in the five weight classes they cover (notably missing a bunch of guys at lightweight, and Fedor at heavyweight). Since they bought/killed Pride there hasn't really been a big gun to draw significant talent away for very long. Currently Strikeforce is the main competitor in the US market, and they're allied with Dream, giving them a decent pool of big name fighters, but they can't match the sheer depth of the UFC's roster at all. Still, I follow:

-UFC
-WEC
-Dream
-Sengoku
-Strikeforce
-Bellator

All worthwhile orgs.

Seems KenFlo has a staph infection in his knee, http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2010/4/12/1417758/ufc-lightweight-contender-kenny, hopefully that doesn't stop him from getting the first shot at Edgar.

They've officially given that job to Bonnar, I believe, who was even better. But as long as they'll let the quite literally clueless "Goldie" near a mic, I know they have no standard.

That would suck if true perfect time for him to have a chance of winning the belt with it not being around BJ's waist.
Edgar vs KenFlo and Penn vs Maynard makes the most sense. Kenny has looked good against everyone who isn't BJ and if Maynard gets the shot instead of Kenny then BJ will have to either fight someone he has already beat recently or maybe Gomi or Guida

I want to see Arlovski fight again :lol

Actually, I really want to see that Gracie, I never have, but I assume Randelman is a feed me fight. Good card.

One dimensional wrestler with questionable submission defense vs the best BJJ practitioner of all time. Mmm ;b

Maybe Randleman watched Hughes/Renzo and we'll get another awesome stand up war. :D

roger is the best of all time? how'd that happen? i don't keep up with the bjj scene.

and saying randleman's sub defensive is questionable is giving it too much credit.

Well it's debatable of course, but the modern BJJ scene is more competitive than it's ever been, and Roger is an 8x Mundial champion (6x heavyweight, 2x absolute), ADCC heavyweight and absolute champ, and has probably the highest submission and guard passing rate of anyone in the sport. You watch finals match after finals match of guys stalemating on grip wars and not a single guy passing his opponent's guard...and then you see Roger just inexplicably pop right into mount and immediately sub. It's more impressive than the flashiest guys doing all sorts of spins and exotic techniques.

and saying randleman's sub defensive is questionable is giving it too much credit.

I dunno, it's just like Mark Coleman's history, really. With the exception of the hilarious Mirko guillotine and an irrelevant sub early in his career, Randleman has only been subbed by Fedor, Saku, and Shogun. Should that really be shameful?

Roger's jits is incredible. I think it was the last Mudials he competed at where he submitted all of his opponents with the exact same choke, a cross choke from mount which is one of the most basic submissions in BJJ just to clown on people.

It remains to be seen if he can translate his skills to MMA effectively.

not shameful but there's no question it's bad imo.

Gilbert Melendez said:
I think it's nuts that the biggest star in Japan is coming over here to fight me. I'm prepared for every scenario and I'm going to prove I'm a true mixed martial artist. I think this is what’s going to separate me from the rest, the fact that I can go to the ground with Aoki and I can ground-and-pound him. Yeah, his jiu-jitsu poses threats, but I think my ground-and-pound does as well.

I may have to change my pick from Melendez to Aoki. If he really wants to go to the floor with Aoki then he's done.

He is probably just BSing like they all do. I mean Mo said he wants to stand and trade with Gegard. If they both stick by their words it will be a good night for DREAM. :lol

Dan Henderson (25-7) -395 vs. Jake Shields (24-4-1) +295
Gegard Mousasi (28-2-1) -275 vs. Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal (6-0) +215
Gilbert Melendez (17-2) -160 vs. Shinya Aoki (23-4) +130
Jason Miller (22-7) -1200 vs. Tim Stout (8-7) +700

Interesting that Melendez is the favorite, but not surprising. Even if Aoki beats Melendez, he probably won't shake the perception of being fragile and one dimensional.

I love that they are putting Mayhem in against this 8-7 Stout guy. Yikes. Didn't realize Hendo was such a big favorite. Mousasi line seems about right. I have idea what's going to happen in the Aoki fight; can't even comment on the line because I have zero idea how it will go down. Neither guy really has a lot of analogues at LW.

The Aoki vs Melendez fight is definitely the most intriguing. I feel like I have no idea where it's going to go.

Henderson has a decent chance of holding more than one belt in Strikeforce and I'm really looking forward to him fighting again.

King Mo has been so great in interviews leading up to this event that I can't wait to see if he's nearly ready for this chance against a fighter everyone seems to feel is the next Fedor.

Mayhem is like a better fighting, more interesting Chris Leben. He's on the card so we can see his entrance :lol

how is he not one dimensional?

Not surprising to me. Melendez is going to knock that crazy pants wearing, false sub wizard out.

Then in a few months Vitor will steal Anderson's soul.

Isn't Vitor out until like August with his injury? Thought I posted something to that effect recently. Sucks. Supposedly they will give the shot to Sonnen. I hate both guys at this point (as much as I can "hate" an MMA fighter, which is to say not much) but that is probably a worthwhile matchup at least from a drama-queen perspective. The only downside is that Sonnen, unlike Silva, usually drops the act when he enters the cage and after the fight.

the prefight build-up with sonnen will be hilarious tho, his comments after the silva-maia fight were epic, he said something along the lines that it is his moral obligation to kick anderson silva's ass :lol

no way sonnen wins, but i will definately be cheering for him in that fight

Silva is going to win easily, White will perform a 180 and tell everyone how amazing Silva is again and set him up with Belfort.

That's the master plan! This is just Griffin all over again. Silva losing to Chael would be way worse than Penn getting Edgar'd. I mean Sonnen was on the verge of getting cut from the UFC last year. The question is whether he KO's him or takes advantage of Sonnen's notorious sub d to entertain himself.

(I still want Sonnen to win.)

You say it like Edgar beating Penn was a bad thing. >:]

"I’m not happy about losing the title. I don’t want to take anything away from Frankie. He did a good job. As a fighter, you’re always thinking you’re winning the fight and you never think you’re losing. You just have that mental mindset. Looking back at it, I just want to congratulate Frankie. My first thought was I gotta get back in the ring immediately and I want to get back on track. The UFC actually called us yesterday and they want to put a rematch in the works and we’ll see what goes from here. I think I got a good idea at what he’s gonna try and do. I know his power, I know how hard he punches, and I know the way he moves. I got that pictured in my mind. The rematch is going to be more technical. After my defeat decision the past couple of days ago, I’m not on [the pound-for-pound] list anymore. It’s gotta be Fedor. He finishes his guys and how can I argue against him?"

More technical? Hmm...

"Personally I think he was embarrassed by what he did that night," White said. "Maybe he had a mental breakdown -- I don't know what happened in the ring. All I can say is I know his next opponent isn't going to be a guy who's going to lay back. Chael Sonnen is going to take it to him, and hopefully we never see that again. If we do, I'll tell you this: If he ever acts like that again in the ring, I will cut him. I don't care if he's the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, I don't care if he is the middleweight champion. I will cut him, absolutely."

Uh-huh

Dana White is acting like a parent that wants to be friends with his kid and not a parent. If Silva does this one more time he's cut. Whatevs, keep telling that to yourself next time you and Silva get into an argument at the toy section of Walmart.

Fucking hell, custom mouthguard I ordered doesn't fit at all. I told them that I didn't think the dental impression came out right, but they insisted that it looked fine and I should send it in, rather than going to a dentist's office and getting a second impression done. :|
