Is this why one of the conditions of Brock Lesnar's early release was the inability to compete in MMA competitions?

MMA and prowrestling have always had crossover in Japan. Sakuraba, Tamura having started in prowrestling. Ogawa.

Randleman, Coleman, Frye have all done prowrestling stints in Japan.

But Pride getting in bed with WWE disturbs me. In Pride's zeal to break into the American market, they might do serious damage to MMA's credibility here.

No doubt. I don't think Pride realizes how much smarter the average Japanese fan is than an American fan. The Japanese can respect, appreciate and differentiate between pro-wrestling and MMA, while most American fans are going to be confused as **** over this partnership. This could be a bad move.

Yeah, something like that, but only in North America. K-1 has Brock signed and slated to make his MMA debut in Japan in February.

Cool. I hope Cro-cop shows up and talks shit to set the table for a Cro-cop Fedor fight in a few months. Didn't expect the next Pride to be in Dec. Thought it was January for sure.

so out of all the possible matchups for me to order the pride show. (fedor vs. cro-cop/barnett/shogun) they choose Fedor to fight hunt. bullshit!

Guys, according to the latest Wrestling Observer, DSE is looking to sell Pride!

"According to several different sources in both Japan and the United States, Dream Stage Entertainment has talked with various groups about selling the Pride Fighting Championships. Most of the prospective buyers are outside the country. Among them are a group from South Korea, as well as several different U.S. groups. It is believed WWE was approached and it is known UFC has been approached.... "

today I just had a random urge to watch a UFC fight and noticed one is on tonight. this will officially be the first time I've watched "a fight" on tv. wish me luck!

Tonight on Spike? Looks like a replay of the finale of season 1 of the reality show. Was a pretty good event. Griffin/Bonnar 1 wasn't TEH BEST FIGHT EVAR like it was announced, but it was exciting.

demon said:
reality show, wtf?

UFC has a reality show where up and coming fighters compete for a UFC contract. The show was taped, but the finale was a live fight night where the finalists in the two weight divisions faced off. Tonight's UFC on Spike is a re-airing of that finale.

Boogie have you heard about Fedor signing for a fight with Bodog Fight?

Yes, I've heard that as well. Apparently Fedor has a clause in his contract allowing him to fight for orgs other than Pride as long as its in Russia. Of course, there's other talk that Fedor only wants to sign one-fight deals from now on, perhaps another sign of Pride's troubles?

The bodog fight is supposed to happen in March. I've heard Jeff Monson floated as a possible opponent.

I heard Monson's already been locked up. If nothing else, Bodog seems to be bringning some serious greenbacks to the table, and I'm liking a lot of the talent they've acquired. It's a completely shitty name for an organization though.

Also what is this mess about DSE selling Pride? F*cking stupid mafioso bullshit had to go and f*ck up the greatest organization in the history of MMA...so sad..

I watched the stream of Bodog's first show. Some decent fighters, but the production quality was crap. Good commentating though, with them having Jeff Osbourne on the mic.

I kind of like the idea of Fedor being a vagabond fighter. It's like Ryu from Street Fighter.

Pride's Mirko (Crocop) Filipovic may be getting set to leave the Japanese fight club. The impressive Grand Prix champion is entertaining offers from all major mixed martial arts organizations including UFC. Crocop told Croatian daily Jutarnji List that "The offer from UFC is slightly better than Pride's, but I haven't decided if I will change jerseys."

Is there anymore info on this? CroCop to the UFC would make me very happy. Not because of any UCF-Pride preference, but finally Silvia will be put in his rightful place, some backwards, backyard MMA league. I'd feel bad for Vera, who is a genuinely talented fighter, but at least he could cut weight and get out of the HW class. I can see Vera beating Silvia. Then CroCop destroys Silvia in Round One ala Silva/Leben and gets the title shot in the next PPV. Maybe Arlovski get another shot, because he'll certainly never get another while Silvia is champ even though he is IMO a better fighter. Not that he'd have any significant chance of victory, but it'd be nice to see him fight a fight that matters again.

It makes sense for Crocop too. He could beat Fedor, but he's always be at risk of a punishing loss. In the UFC, he'd be the (undisputed) man. Marketing oportunities would make him very wealthy and he could sit atop the division for years and years, easily becoming the greatest HW champ in UFC history. Here's hoping the trigger gets pulled.

Big day for the UFC

They bought the WEC and have bought some fighter contracts from the WFA.

Rampage coming?????
Lindland?
Herring?

Can't wait to see what comes from this.

http://www.ufc.com/index.cfm?fa=news.detail&gid=3959

I heard about the acquisition of the WEC, but contracts from the WFA?! SWEEEET!

Also, I can't make threads for a month, so it will be up to one of you guys (dem, Asbel?) to make threads for the UFN on Wednesday as well as UFC 66 and the Pride NYE event.

Wow good news, UFC definitely needs to get some fresh talent in there, especially in the heavyweight division.

Someone on the underground is apparently quoting Meltzer in the Observer as confirming the UFC picking up Rampage's and Lindland's contracts in the deal.

Sorry, not having internet where I live now makes it difficult to keep up with mma or gaf. It's up to dem if he wants it and I know he can make a good UFC thread. :D

The Zuffa news sounds great. Too bad for Pride though. :/

Meltzer says the PPV industry is expecting 1-1.3 million buys for Liddell vs Ortiz. Thats CRAZY.

Hughes vs Penn pulled in 700k buys.. which is also crazy.
Hughes vs St Pierre must have pulled in even more.

The UFC is on one hell of a roll.

sweet.

i'm just catching up on basically the last months worth of UFC news. that's pretty sweet that crocop is interested in signing with UFC, but it also kind of sucks cuz there's nobody that can beat him there.

maybe boogie can answer this one: how hard is it for fighters to be able to switch up the rules they fight by? how long would it take crocop to adjust to UFC rules? i'd hate to see him kicking the hell out of Silvia (someday maybe :lol), or anyone from another organization, just to get DQ'ed for a head-kick/stomp.

Lots of great news lately! I can't wait until Chuck gets his revenge against Rampage via 1st round KO.

*crosses fingers that Cro Cop and Aleks Emelianenko (sp) make it to the octagon*

Difficult to say, and depends on the fighter. Some would likely get so caught up in the "moment" that they might forget the differences in rules. Sometimes even UFC-only fighters forget. In Melvin Guillard's last UFC fight, he wound up for a soccer kick on his opponent, but seemed to pull some of the force from it before it connected.

On the one hand, Mirko has occasionally throws an extra punch in on defeated opponenets, such as punches on Igor, and Dos Caras. On the other hand, someone once said that Crocop didn't actually like soccer kicks much because of the risk of injuring his foot. So I would lean towards thinking that Crocop wouldn't have any trouble adapting.

Also on that point, in Pride's US debut in October, they had to follow US rules, and there weren't any problems there. Fighters would definitely have to be conscious of it though.

The big thing is really knees to the head of a downed opponent. Stomps and shit hardly even get used in pride.. and when they are theyre rarely that effective. Though i guess when they land good theyre pretty deadly :lol

UFC ON A “RAMPAGE,” ACQUIRES WFA CONTRACTS, TRADEMARK ASSETS

By Loretta Hunt

The mixed martial arts world continues to grow yet streamline at the same time.

According to a press release circulated today by Zuffa LLC, owners of the UFC, the thriving Las Vegas-based promotion has absorbed all of the assets still connected with the failing World Fighting Alliance organization.

“WFA Enterprises, LLC, a subsidiary of Zuffa, purchased select fighter contracts and the trademarks and other intellectual property of World Fighting Alliance, Inc., a corporation owned by Las Vegas attorneys, Ross Goodman and Louis Palazzo,” read the release.

Following a three year hiatus, the WFA had returned to Los Angeles in July with its “King of the Streets” event, but had since postponed a follow-up date scheduled for the Aladdin Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

As announced by sherdog.com last week, former WFA CEO Jeremy Lappen had entered into legal proceedings against the WFA organization, citing a breach of contract for non-payment of services.

UFC president Dana White confirmed to The Fight Network this evening that light heavyweight standout Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (22-6) is among the talents this acquisition has facilitated. Jackson remains one of UFC Light Heavyweight Chuck Liddell’s few and most high profile losses, dating back to the semi-final round of PRIDE’s Final Conflict 2003 tournament, where Jackson eliminated Liddell (19-3) via a TKO referee stoppage from strikes.

White did not reveal when fans can expect Rampage to make his Octagon debut.

Fighters Matt Lindland, Heath Herring, Ivan Salaverry, Jason “Mayhem” Miller, and Urijah Faber have all been established in the past as under either exclusive or non-exclusive WFA contracts. Confirmation on their new status is yet to come.

FINALLY

Mirko is NOT fighting on Pride's New Year's card. Says on his official site that he still can't kick like he wants to.

But it also says this:

"It was confirmed today that Mirko won't be fighting at PRIDE's NYE event.
"I still can't kick like I want to. It's the best that we give more time to this injury to heal. I want to be in perfect shape for my next fights."

But there's one far more important question lately - in which promotion will Mirko fight in the future? The big decision was made and the official statement will follow soon. "

I'm really starting to think that the UFC has nabbed Crocop.

Former Pride and K-1 fighter Tom Erikson has posted on Gary Gooridge's forum, as well as the underground, saying:

"Nothing is for sure until they step in the ring as far as I am concerned. I will say this, that I have taken several calls concerning someone I know very well possibly being Cro Cop's first oppenant in February in the UFC. Will this happen I do not know but I truly believe it is being discussed. You will know more when I know more. "

And since on the weekend, crocop's website said crocop will announce what org he will fight for "very soon", well, what's very soon? Tonight's UFC Fight Night on Spike of course. Can we expect an announcement tonight? I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

Crocop still has a fight left in Pride.. so i dont know why they would make an announcement anytime soon.

We don't know the terms of the contract. Some fighter contracts have both a stipulation regarding the number of fights, AND a time-limit. Perhaps Crocop's contract expires on 12/31 regardless whether he fights.

So who is everyone picking tonight?

I am going with-
Diego
Karo
Kos
Shonie

I kinda have a filling Shonie might lose though. I know nothing about his opponent, but just that the line is close even though Shonie is a much bigger name gives me a bad feeling. Odds are too bad on the other 3 to put money down.

Riggs>Diego
Joslin>Koscheck
Karo>fickett

who cares about the rest of the card

Im more hoping that Riggs beats Diego and Joslin beats Kos than thinking it will happen. :P

Diego over Riggs

Karo over Fickett

And of course I'm rooting for my Canadian boy Joslin. He's got the skills, but it will be a tough match. I cannot imagine Kosheck beating Jeff standing, and Jeff is a BJJ blackbelt, so he should be able to nullify Kos' ground well enough, but I'm worried about whether he can stop the takedown.

Basically, if Kos wins, I see it being a boring blanket match, but if Joslin pulls it out, it will be in exciting fashion.

Probably Shonie over Davis, too.

Until I read that last line I thought either you were crazy or just a big "pull for the underdog" type guy. Of course anything can happen in any given fight. But its tough to see the perenially disappointing Riggs beating Diego. I cant stand Koscheck, but he seems to be improving rapidly, and worse case, like you said, he will just lay and pray to a decision.

I want Riggs to take apart Diego just cause I'm so sick of his Jesus crazy bible thumper crap every match. The kid has talent, but god is he annoying.

According to Sherdog, Cro Cop chose the UFC! A little of the article-

Reigning PRIDE Open-Weight Grand Prix champion Mirko Filipovic (Pictures) has apparently decided to bolster the ranks of the UFC heavyweight division, a source inside the Croatian's camp informed Sherdog.com Wednesday.

http://www.sherdog.com/news/news.asp?n_id=6352

It's time for a new UFC HW champ, Sylvia's time is now coming to a rapid end via LHK.

CC is gonna wipe the UFC clean :lol

Not MMA news, exactly, but tonight I (FINALLY) got my blue belt in BJJ. :D

Now I can beat Mike Tyson in a street fight! :lol

Awesome news about Crocop. I just hope he takes time to heal fully before taking on the UFC. It would be catastrophic if he tried to come back too soon and made things worse.
