What strikes me is that they dared to make all the 3 protagonists Caucasian. And what double strikes me is the media is letting them get away with it. What am I missing?

I can't find anything woke about it. It actually seems kinda nice. Unlike Bloom and Rage it's not trying to hit you over the head with Message, and clearly a lot more sincere love went into this game.
Only thing is it's barely a game.
Who do the devs or publishers know lol. Usually the big sites wouldn't give a game like this the time of day, nevermind making it the top rated game of the year.
Weird, but that's how games journalism works I guess. Hard to be too annoyed at the devs.
Also if it does turn out to be pushing a Message, at least us millenials aren't to blame , despite the date this game is clearly really set before my time. Extremely Gen X.
