Miyamoto: More Remakes Headed To 3DS

Nintendo handhelds have always been port heavy. The most boring part about ports is they've been straight conversions of old games (GBA = SNES, N64 = DS) with no improvements. As long as they're making the graphics better, stuff like the Zelda and Starfox games are interesting to me. Already great games, better frame rates, better visuals... cool.

As for the e-shop, well I for one am not interested in old GB games, but the occasional 3D enhanced one might be alright. I'll have to see the pricing and improvements though. But I'm not paying $5 for an emulated Super Mario Land.

Super Mario 3, World, Zelda 1, ALttP and Super Metroid for me please. Could you imagine Kraid in 3D or Phantoon? I'd take SotN on 3DS also.

Funny how you don't mind SotN's genre shift, even though you seem to mind it for Mario 2 and Zelda 2.

It's that city, so your "repainting textures" comment is kinda funny.

Damn, why did they fuck up the greens so much 3DS game. Not digging it at all.

Am I the only one thinking this is awful for the third party relationships? I mean, the message they're already sending with this (OOT and SF64) is like "it's not just you can't compete with our games, you can't even compete with our 10 to 20 years old games either, that take just 2 cents and a third-row dev house to convert, and people will be sheepish enough to buy it instead of yours because it's Nintendo, bitches"

Yes, I still think that last-last-last gen ports and remakes from console to handheld should either die on a fire or release at budget price / eStore. Reason is simple, aside for what I stated above, each release of this kind is one less original game, which will either be canned or left to die only in Japan.

Super Smash Bros Melee+: Melee with all the Brawl characters, stages, and (IMPROVED) online included.
Why would it be called Melee if it has all of the character/stages from Brawl?

3DS should have nothing but remakes of games we played 10-15 years ago with new crap added (like that spiffy keen Augment system from Final Fantasy IV DS).

That and ummm... Ubisoft shovelware and 3-hour tech demos with gee whiz 3D effects that make me go Ooooh and Aaaah.

Anything that requires as little creative effort as actually possible. Oh and you should tack on gimmicky StreetPass & multiplayer modes to everything so I can collect useless crap.

All of these games should cost at least $10 more than their equivalents on other portable systems ($30 more than on iPhone) which will still make them cheaper than on NGP.

And ummm... I want one ported over old school Game Boy game from the early 1990s added to the Virtual Console per week. But no more than that or I'll get greedy.

Lastly, when you bring out Animal Crossing 3DS as the big core title for the holidays (because Kid Icarus, Mario Kart and Paper Mario will all be delayed) I want nothing added to it from the DS version except 3D graphics, StreetPass stuff and little multiplayer mini-games I can play with Tom Nook. 'Cause why would you want to improve on perfection. That game was a gem.

Thank you kindly. :)

Third parties did well for themselves with the DS with original content, and that system was chock full of remakes and enhanced ports (many of them coming from 3rd parties). There's going to be a lower ratio of new games to remakes/ports on handhelds compared to consoles due to budget anyway.

if third parties cant compete with ten year old games, it's their own damn fault.

At first I thought that was dumb, because we already have two remakes headed to the 3DS, which is a lot considering it just came out.

But then I realized the title was out of context and it was reference to the 3D Classics games, then I was happy.

Is this supposed to be good news? I want original games; I couldn't care less about remakes and ports.

1. They are not remakes or ports if you never played the original. They would be new games then.

2. This is the equivalent of the Wii's Virtual Console. There are supposed to be games there.

What were we expecting? That they were going to remake OoT and just stop with that for the rest of the 3DS' life? Yeah right. This is the biggest "no duh" news I've seen.

But already I can tell it won't be as bad as Super Mario Advance titles were. Gyah.

But seriously, there are times where I want to see if nostalgia blinds my opinion on games, like how I loved Glover as a kid even though it seems people hated it. The chance to play exact ports of classics, only in 3D is a nice way to review them.

oh wait i was confused, thought you was speaking about new content, and that somehow either layton or gta was lazy or something or the the other

just realized it's about them sales

It's not exactly competing against ten year old games, but more like competing against Nintendo's fuck huge marketing machine of said games. The whole fact that Nintendo can overshadow everybody else's release not just with a new game, but with whichever minigame crap they decide to market. That's the kind of stuff that third parties are fed up of, and doing it with a low cost port of a 15 years old game only adds on the grief.

Not a fan of remakes. I'd rather they take the StarFox 64 engine and make a sequel with it than waste time on a remake. I don't tend to buy games I already own.

Not universally. For every Professor Layton, there's a Chinatown Wars.
Chinatown Wars had problems, yeah, but I thought it did sell decently considering the pretty huge hurdle of not many people having interest in top-down GTA anymore. It wasn't though that it didn't sell because people were favoring Nintendo remakes/ports, since they were pretty few and far between on the DS -- Mario 64, Kirby Super Star, Pokemon HG/SS, and maybe a couple others I may be forgetting, for the entire generation.

I'm sure someone has already pointed this out. But there is a 3d classics section of the eshop that is nothing but old games retrofitted with 3d, I believe alttp or link's awakening was shown at E3 last year. I think this is what Miyamoto was referring to.

If this has already been said then it certainly bears repeating:

Miyamoto has previously said himself that when Nintendo "updates" a game (which so far in the case of the 3DS are remakes, not ports) that said game is made to appeal to the audience that has yet to play it. If, for examples sake, you were 8 years old at the time of Ocarina's release, it's unlikely you would've played it. You have though heard how good it is over and over through the years. Now, you'd be 21 years old and will soon be getting a spiffy remade version that you can finally try.

This is who these "ports" are aimed at, so please stop bitching that Nintendo is seemingly making you pay full price for a game you've already played. If you enjoyed them in the past and can't wait to try them again, hopefully these versions will improve on the originals.
If you only want new stuff, ignore these "ports" and just wait. As said, there's new Icarus, Mario, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart and on and on coming soon.

Its bafflingly on GAF why so many people whine so much about stuff they're not even planning to buy. Save your time and energy because nobody cares anyway

the difference is now the same people that ragged on the PSP about Console games on a handheld will love the 3DS for the same reason when really it was always a good thing because if you love a game on your tv why shouldn't you love it on the go?

Double standards make the world go round.

PSP is still a beast no matter what people say, so many awesome games, plenty of unique IP's, loads of good rpgs and action games.

That second analog stick might end up being a curse for ngp, no matter how badly I wanted a second stick for something like liberty city stories.
I expect less unique / true handheld/ platformer/ action games and more of that 3rd person cover /fps bullshit.

I agree. I am so sick of all the remakes. These games need to stay in the past. Come up with some original ideas already. I refuse to buy crap over and over just because it has a few new bells and whistles. Maybe I'm in the minority

"All theses remakes"? There's 2 remakes announced on the 3DS (okay, 3 if MGS3D is anything more than a tech demo), that's it. Meanwhile there is a pretty hefty amount of new games announced. Probably a lot more to come at E3. You're acting like Nintendo announced they cancelled all their projects for the 3DS in order to make N64 remakes...

Oh those poor little indie publishers like ea and activision don't have the money to advertise their 3ds efforts ? Oh how bad, we should all feel sry for them.... Everyone should buy madden on 3DS - ea deserves to shine on that platform.

If A Link to the Past was ever truly remade graphically from the ground up, I'd shit myself!!! That is my all time favorite Zelda game.

Because anything like Super Metroid kicks ass. And Symphony of the Night is way better than any other Castlevania for me. Hate hate Zelda 2 and Mario 2, most disappointing sequels ever(other than DMC2). Don't fucking get me started.

I would probably cry, to be honest. That game was my life when I was six.

No way. 1/3 of F-Zero GX was SEGA's awesome cheesy music.

Donkey Kong Country 2 remake in 3D please.
If Retro did it... I don't think it would be a good idea. DKC:Returns has different mechanics from the old games, and it would make the remake seem really disappointing when comparing to DKC:Returns.
