Miyamoto needs to go take a seat somewhere.

Wii Music definitely felt the crest of 'Miyamoto's lost it', and the other talented designers in Tokyo EAD are the real driving force these days. I mean his big first WiiU game is a Wii-postponed sequel. The man that was supposed to be making the game that justifies each and every controller decision seems pretty non-involved in proving the GamePad's worth.

Cause surely everyone wants to give Mario the sonic treatment, you know with drama, more human princesses, planet being threatened and bad vocal rock music.

Luckily we are not yet in Sonic territory of tragedy. The story bits in SMG didn't bother me because they were optional for the most part.

QUOTE=Valnen;45751723]It seemed to me that you were implying there was something wrong with that.[/QUOTE]

Not at all. I just didn't find it particularly funny or good writing. Just a cheap "hey it's a videogame" gag.

I'm old. I agree with the OP.

Removing the story elements and the sidekick characters from a Paper Mario game is not "for the best". And while I'm not as offended as some by the lack of Kremlings in DKC Returns, the way that they neutered Cranky's character and made all other Kong regulars and semi-regulars (Funky, Candy, Swanky, etc.) conspicuously absent made me see Returns as less of a DKC 4 as it is an unneeded retcon/reboot of the entire franchise.

Also, FYI, they aren't "his" games. Most if not all the games the OP mentioned were spearheaded by someone else and would have taken a different direction had Miyamoto not swooped in and "upended the tea table" as he is so fond of doing.
I don't think he would mind a good story. There was a reason he neutered this (ofcourse right now we can only guess what that reason was).
Yeah i know they are not "his" games. But in the end, they are HIS games.

Yeah, that is exactly what he said, and that's totally what the Paper Mario games do.
No, excuse me, but I disagree with this. I have played Mario RPG games and a couple of Kingdom Hearts and in terms of story they are not at all alike. Mario games are cheerful and full of jokes, while KH games are confusing and unnecessarily serious.
I think I would compare KH's story with Smash Bros. Brawl's if I were to pick a Nintendo game that suffers from the same problems story-wise.

That...was kind of the point of what I said. It was sarcasm, because the OP said nothing about Mario becoming like Kingdom Hearts, and in fact he later referenced the Paper Mario games as being exactly the sort of light-hearted stories that the platformers could have. No angst, just funnier writing and maybe a cut scene here and there. Wanting more than just a basic "Bowser kidnaps princess" story doesn't mean we want Mario to become Sonic Adventure 2.

I didn't know about how he stripped down Sticker Star, that's good to hear, TTYD bored me to death.
*Goes back to hiding again*

Hmm.. The OP proposes adding lore to Mario games, so I compared it to adding lore to another usually lighthearted universe (Disney). If Mario games start with timelines and lore, then I think after a couple of games we'd get something similar to those Sonic games, and gradually reach the asymptote KH.

Mario games have had those funny cut scenes, I remember seeing those after beating castles in Mario World. I'm seeing those too in Mole Mania (which I'm currently playing). Aren't those scenes enough?

I think there should be some kind of universal rule where if you haven't played TTYD, you're not allowed to talk shit about the series.

I loved those cut scenes as a child, and still do, but I don't remember getting even that much a "story" in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Super Mario World and Super Mario Sunshine were both interesting deviations from the norm, because both games are setup with the premise that Mario is taking a vacation from being a hero until Peach is suddenly kidnapped. Both games put Mario in new lands that expand the borders of what we had already seen of the Mushroom World, and both games introduce fun new character races (Yoshis and Piantas).

Super Mario Galaxy not only felt fresh for similar reasons, but because it had the optional storybook scenes which created a backstory for the character of Rosalina that otherwise could not have been explore without interrupting gameplay. A lot of people did like SMG's story, which is why I'm baffled at how SMG 2 is widely considered to be so much better. Without new characters, any semblance of a story, or even a new setting, it felt for all the world like one of the most by-the-numbers sequels I've ever played.

smg wishes it had the level design and pacing of smg2. the ability to tackle new obstacles and to do so quickly is what matters most in a platformer. smg2 is fellowship of the ring. smg is like the two towers. nsmbw is rotk.
3d land is some movie that isn't good at all

I respectfully disagree. NSMBW is like a poor man's Super Mario 3D Land. 3D Land was the first game where I felt they came *somewhat* close to taking the fun of SMB3 and translating it to 3D.

Sticker Star is AMAZING, but as a Paper Mario game it truly sucks. They should have named it differently (just like they did with M&L) to avoid comparisons.

I'm fucking tired of Nintendo experimenting with the Paper Mario series.

3d land is a great concept. it'd be neat if they made a version with some challenging level design though.

like super paper mario, it tries to get by on charm alone. however, i guess it gets points for not padding its length out with pointlessness like super paper mario did.

"Does DKC really need Kremlings?"

"Does Super Mario Galaxy really need lore of any kind?"

"Does Sticker Star, a game from a story/character driven series, really need any story/characters?"

Honestly, who the fuck does Miyamoto think he is? We all know Miyamoto is a dude of relentlessly rigid conservatism, but it's clearly getting worse with each game he's been even marginally-involved in. Oh, and I bring this up now of all times because wasn't the man supposed to "step down" and assume a less-meddling position as part of that 2012 Nintendo restructure rumor?

...I guess that would have happened by now if it were true, but I still have faith GAF! I mean, I have to. I don't know if I can stand seeing another one of my beloved franchises harpooned by Miyamoto's toxic gameplay-first philosophies. Can you just imagine?

"Does Kid Icarus: Uprising 2 really need story, characters, or dialogue?" (Oh Palutena, help us all!)

Discuss.

You drank too much yesterday, baby. You drank too much.

If he's the one blocking an F-Zero Wii U I totally agree.

GX didn't sell. Nobody is blocking the series.

*cries*

It's very much alike the SMG series where the challenge level goes. Levels are shorter and with less filler. It's the better 3D mario IP than Galaxy games personally :)

Without Tanooki, the later levels are quite hard. Too bad tanooki is godmode in that game.

Haven't been keeping up I guess. Miyamoto was the reason for the latest Paper Mario being stripped down? If so, then I can see where the OP's coming from.

Way too hyperbolic for me to completely agree with though. Nothing's wrong with gameplay first. If anything, it's a good thing. It's cherishing gameplay but watering down everything else that's the problem. Though in Paper Mario's case, that did affect the gameplay (partners).

This is by far the worst. His orders for that game were just ridiculous, if that Iwata Asks tells the whole truth of the story. The other two examples you listed are perfectly fine, I think, although I can definitely see why others wouldn't like those decisions.

I also don't think "gameplay-first philosophies" are the problem, but "gameplay-only, nothing else matters" philosophies are.

This right here. Nice to find a good post on the first page between the hyperbolic OP an the sea of moaning fanboys defending Miyamoto's honor.

Toxic gameplay first philosofy? How dare Miyamoto value the defining characteristic of the videogame medium above everything else!

the game had actually decent mechanics, but the reason people hate it is because of the story, which is indeed horrendous

Yes the story was meh but it presented an alternative 3d metroid game to the prime series which i really liked

Make the game longer, cut the story crap and you have a decent game

I think there should be some kind of universal rule where if you haven't played TTYD, you're not allowed to talk shit about the series.

fair. i never played the original (N64 one) so i can't speak on that myself...i enjoyed the wii one but went it knowing it wasnt gonna be TTYD, so that helped.

I like Galaxy 1 more than Galaxy 2 just because of the story in 1, so I do agree with the OP. The second game had great gameplay but the story felt really paper thin compared with Galaxy 1 which had real heart behind it.

Also the real story in SMG is pretty much all optional (the storybook).

Despite how I've fallen off of playing Nintendo games lately, I always love+enjoy them for how rich in gameplay they are. As long as Miyamoto doesn't stop doing what made him and his games famous+successful, I'll be happy.

Sure, you can have great gameplay and great story+lore but that's not what Miyamoto is trying to do, IMO. The games he's made and the games he's helped make are focused on being extremely playable, fun, and most of all fun for all ages. Adding too much story, lore and such is what creates stuff like Other M. If you place the story and lore within the world and gameplay intelligently, you get instant classics like Metroid Prime. I just think you're looking for the wrong thing, OP.

What the hell is up with GAF threads DEMANDING people in the industry step aside, be shamed, or whatever lately?

It's quite ridiculous that some people think they know what makes a good game over industry veterans with 35+ years of experience making excellent games.

If anything, Sonic Adventure 1 was a good blend of adventure/action and story. Also, I think previous Paper Marios blended mario style with rpging pretty since THAT was what Paper Mario series is about. You want pure platforming stick to main 2D and 3D Mario series. So I do agree with the change in Sticker Star

As for the rest of the OP complaints, it sounds like he needs new game experiences as there's nothing wrong with most of Miyamotos game designs

because SMG's story was a nice bonus, but people liked the game because of its stellar gameplay. SMG2 gave us even more incredible levels which is what one should expect from a Mario game....

i would hope the majority of game designers apporach games with "gameplay first" in mind. A good story can be a nice complement but gameplay is the key aspect of a game. Considering the average writing quality of games... the last thing we need is another sonic situation. Mario sticking to gameplay first and foremost is perfectly fine.

I have no troubles playing games with no story.

Well if it was up to Miyamoto we would have gotten neither of these:

yCi8j.jpg
7iXxi.jpg

Heck, we wouldn't even have gotten the final boss of SPM nor either of these bosses.
Miyamoto's "story shouldn't interfere gameplay" policy doesn't mean games shouldn't have any humorous or interesting text at all.

He acted as Mario Galaxy 2's text editor btw.

"Does Sticker Star, a game from a story/character driven series, really need any story/characters?"

Unless you show me an Iwata Asks where Miyamoto personally did this one, I doubt this one is his doing.

Also! Almost all of Sticker Star's advertising was skewed far younger than I'm usually used to Nintendo aiming, so I'm guessing this was intentional design to make it friendlier to younger (5-8) players.

I agree with your points, but saying "toxic-gameplay first philosophy" as a negative makes it seem like a troll post I want no part of.

No, the devs said in an interview Miyamoto's suggestions changed the shape of their design, from not using new characters to not using partners again.

Aside from wanting us to change the atmosphere a lot, there were two main things that Miyamoto-san said from the start of the project—"It's fine without a story, so do we really need one?" and "As much as possible, complete it with only characters from the Super Mario world.

Then again, Super Paper Mario also gave us this:

Prior to becoming a Pixl, Tippi originally existed as a human girl called Timpani, descended from the Tribe of Ancients. While walking one day, she came across an injured man lying at the base of a cliff. His name was Blumiere and he was descended from the Tribe of Darkness, long-time enemies of Timpani's people, the Ancients. Despite this, she helped him and nursed him back to health. The two soon fell in love and decided to get married. Blumiere's father, however, did not want his son to marry an Ancient, so Blumiere and Timpani decided to get married in secret. Upon learning of the lover's plans, Blumiere's father quickly decided to place a curse upon Timpani that would forever separate her from Blumiere. Timpani was banished from her current existence and fated to wander the dimensions forever. She was eventually found, barely alive, by the wizard Merlon. To ensure her "true form" survived, Merlon transformed Timpani into the Pixl, Tippi. However, all her memories as Timpani were lost during the process and Tippi had no recollection of her former life.

The Chaos Heart.

“Yes, all precisely as written in the Dark Prognosticus! Already it is unleashed! The Chaos Heart!”
—Count Bleck, Super Paper Mario

The Chaos Heart is a dark source of power from Super Paper Mario. It appears to be a giant Pure Heart colored gray and black, constantly releasing nearly-invisible waves from itself. After Luigi stomps on it during the opening, the Chaos Heart briefly emits a dark, star-like aura (seen on the right); it is implied to be a brief moment of instability that throws everyone in attendance across Castle Bleck.

As written in the Dark Prognosticus, the Chaos Heart was unleashed by the marriage of a monstrous king and a pure princess. Once summoned, it created an interdimensional rift known as The Void, which would eventually engulf all dimensions. The Chaos Heart can only be destroyed by either killing the controller, or with the concentrated power of love embodied by the Purity Heart. As the Chaos Heart empowers its controller to the point of invincibility, the Pure Hearts are necessary to overcome it.

The Chaos Heart was first controlled by Count Bleck, who wanted to destroy all worlds and create new ones out of inconsolable heartbreak due to the disappearance of his love, Lady Timpani. Unbeknownst to his minions, however, Bleck had no intention of remaking the universe; his final goal was to perish along with the rest of creation (a fact he kept secret from his subordinates in order to preserve their hope). In response, Merlon gathers four heroes to collect the Pure Hearts and defeat Count Bleck, which they eventually accomplish by using the Pure Hearts to destroy the impenetrable barrier protecting Count Bleck.

However, despite Count Bleck's defeat, the Chaos Heart remained active. At this point, Dimentio appeared and revealed that he had taken control of the Chaos Heart, planning to use its power to remake the universe in his image. Along with a brainwashed Luigi, the sinister jester merges with the Chaos Heart in order to form Super Dimentio - since Luigi was the ideal host for the Chaos Heart, its power was magnified to far greater proportions than the power Count Bleck had wielded. As he shrugged off the heroes' attacks, Super Dimentio used his new powers to accelerate The Void's expansion, rapidly consuming all worlds.

Unfortunately for Dimentio, Count Bleck is able to recreate the Pure Hearts through his love for Tippi - revealed to be Lady Timpani in a new form - and his loyal minions. The three remaining heroes use the Pure Hearts to negate much of Super Dimentio's Chaos Heart-derived power, allowing them to defeat him and free Luigi. Although Dimentio expires soon after, his last act is to imbue a "shadow of his power" into the Chaos Heart, preventing it from disappearing long enough to complete the destruction of the universe.

To stop the cataclysm once and for all, Count Bleck and Tippi return to Castle Bleck's chapel, the very spot where the former first created the Chaos Heart. With the dark artifact floating between them, the long-lost lovers finally exchanged vows, reforming the Pure Hearts one last time. As Count Bleck and Tippi reaffirmed their everlasting love for each other, the Pure Hearts encircled the Chaos Heart and united into the Purity Heart, obliterating the Chaos Heart and sealing The Void.

The ancients were an incredibly intelligent race that possessed powerful magic, however they lacked physical strength. 3,000 years before the events of Super Paper Mario, one of the Ancients circumvented his race's physical limitations by creating the "thinking tools" known as Pixls using knowledge gleaned from the prophetic book, the Dark Prognosticus[2]. The Ancients used the Pixls to build great cities and spread their knowledge across many worlds. However, they grew dependent on their living tools, and after 1,000 years of prosperity, they were devastated by the uprising of their Pixls, who had fallen under the control of an entity called the Pixl Queen. The Pixl Queen had been the first Pixl created, and was horrified at how her fellow Pixls were being used, but her revolution was eventually foiled by the twelve original Pixls (besides herself) and their Ancient partners, all but one of whom perished.[3]

The survivor discovered that the Pixls had been created from the souls of deceased people (with the Pixl Queen in particular being the daughter of the Ancient who made the Pixls)[2][4], and to prevent the knowledge contained in the Dark Prognosticus from being used in such a way again and causing another tragedy like the Pixl uprising, he took the book and disappeared[5]. He later founded the Tribe of Darkness, a group of Ancients who became known for their great power and secrecy. The Tribe of Ancients accused them of stealing the Dark Prognosticus, and the idea that they wanted to use the book to enhance their shadowy powers joined the true story of their shielding of the book from those who would misuse it[6].

Five hundred years after the Pixl Uprising, the Ancients became aware that the Dark Prognosticus predicted that all worlds would be consumed by a Void in 1,500 years' time. A group of four sages believed that the power of live could prevent the destruction, and their research led the construction of the Purity Heart, which was meant to destroy the Chaos Heart that would create The Void[7]. They wrote another book called the Light Prognosticus to provide the destined Heroes of Light with instructions and guidance in how to prevent the consumption of all worlds, and broke the Purity Heart into eight smaller Pure Hearts, which they then passed out to other trustworthy individuals for safekeeping for the next 1,500 years. They also created Flipside, a world between dimensions, and with the help of the Tribe of Darkness, they created its dark counterpart as well, Flopside[8], and hid Heart Pillars around both cities so that only the hero would be able to go to them and deposit the Pure Hearts. They also used the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials to research the power of the Pure Hearts, while the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials was used to study the dark magic of shadows, with both also serving to test the forces that guarded the Pure Hearts[9].

However, the Ancients' time was limited. After the Pixl Uprising, the Ancients grew fearful of their "thinking tools". They outlawed their creation and limited the power of the existing Pixls[10], which slowly dwindled in numbers until only the original eleven Pixls (down from twelve, as one died defeating the Pixl Queen) remained, scattered across the worlds and hidden in Treasure Chests to await the Heroes of Light[11]. Without the Pixls, the Ancients' power and influence began to decline[10], and by the time the events of Super Paper Mario began to play out, their civilization was all but lost. Only a few descendents of the Tribe of Ancients are encountered in Super Paper Mario, as well as the last member of the Tribe of Darkness and the lingering spirit of Merlumina, one of the four sages.
Count Bleck was once a member of the Tribe of Darkness, whose ancestors stole the Dark Prognosticus from the Ancients shortly after the Pixl Rebellion, to ensure that it will not be used for evil. It's unknown what world or dimension Bleck comes from, but it's mentioned that the tribe lives in a castle located in the middle of a dark forest. It is slowly revealed in vague flashbacks that Count Bleck, when he is known as Blumiere, originally has a human girlfriend, Lady Timpani, whom he cherishes and loves. Apparently, Blumiere accidentally falls off a mountain, is knocked into unconsciousness, and is found on the brink of death at the cliff's base by Timpani, who nurses him back to health at her home. When Blumiere awakes, he is shocked to find that a human saved him as he is from the Tribe of Darkness. Timpani dismisses the thought and states that anyone with a heart will save an injured one.

The pair soon fell in love with each other, and Blumiere attempted to escape from his castle home to see her again. His abusive father, who scolds him for making such an attempt, caught him. He is able to sneak away nonetheless and becomes more and more interested in Timpani, who returns his feelings. Eventually, Blumiere's father finds out what is happening and threatens Timpani, telling her to stay away from the tribe. Timpani is scared for her life and tells Blumiere that they can no longer see each other.

Blumiere can't accept this and tells Timpani that they must go somewhere where their love will be accepted and where they can get married. Timpani agrees and the pair makes plans to leave. However, before these plans can be put into effect, Blumiere's father abducts Timpani and uses his dark magic to curse her to wander dimensions until her death. Blumiere is filled with shock and horror when she suddenly goes missing and demands to know where she is. His father reveals what he had done to her and tells Blumiere that it is for the best.
Castle Bleck, the Count's new home and base of operations.

Overcome with rage and grief, Blumiere goes insane and decides to get revenge on the tribe. He steals the Dark Prognosticus, which the tribe has kept since its ancestors stole it and uses it to gain ancient knowledge of powerful dark magic. Blumiere's spirit and personality soon fade away as he is corrupted and changes into Count Bleck, a villain motivated by grief and regret. Using his new powers, Count Bleck murders his father and destroys his entire tribe out of thirst for revenge. After killing his own people, Bleck either constructs or finds a fortress and calls it Castle Bleck to serve as a base of operations and as a home, which is located in a realm composed entirely of darkness.

However, Bleck still has a small lingering hope that Timpani might still be alive. He goes from world to world, searching for the woman he loved. He never finds her though, no matter how much he searches. One of Carson's stories tells of a man who comes across a bat held captive in a trap (assumed to be Bleck). The man lets the creature go and then camps out for the night. When he wakes up he sees that the bat has transformed into a woman who pledges her life to the man out of love. This woman is inferred to be Nastasia.

The Count and his new assistant return to his castle where Bleck realizes that the woman he loved is gone forever. In reality, Timpani is still alive as she is found barely clinging to life by Merlon in Flipside. Using the powers of the ancients, Merlon transforms Timpani into a Pixl, but she has no memory of her past life and is christened Tippi by Merlon. All that is left for Count Bleck is to avenge her supposed death by destroying everything that takes her away from him, existence itself. Bleck decides to fulfill the last prophecy written in the Dark Prognosticus, which ends the existence of all worlds and dimensions.

Bleck gathers more followers, who carry out his plan. He has O'Chunks, Mimi, and Dimentio on his side. When Nastasia finds Luigi in Castle Bleck, Nastasia brainwashes him and turns him into Mr. L. The 4 of them attack Mario, Bowser, and Peach several times, though they all fail. Dimentio is shown to be more sinister and evil than Count Bleck and even plans to betray him (this betrayal is hinted at throughout the game).

I hate most miyamoto games. But I recognise him as a god amongst developers.

Gameplay first should be the default philosophy making GAMES. How it is not amazes me.
