MLB 09 The Show : Worth getting a PS3 over?

I have resisted the PS3 so far, MGS4 -- it was tough, but I handled it. And if I can tolerate not playing MGS4, I'm sure I can skip out on FF XIII. Killzone 2 and LBP look pretty slick as well.

I've never played a sports game in my life, I thought the idea of it was pretty lame when you could A) Watch the real thing or B) Play it in real life, however -- a few days ago I was at a friends place and he had the game, we played like 5 games straight. It felt incredible. The detail was incredible -- and the game felt somewhat realistic to play, most of the games we finished 4-3, 6-2, 3-1 ranges.

But, how good is good? Is this a type of game that keeps on loving, a month later, two months later, well into the real season?

And yes, I do have an HDTV so blu-ray would be cool.

I don't mean to start a 360 vs. PS3 debate on sports games, I'm just pretty sure a few other gaffers may have gotten a ps3 for mlb 09 the show (or another game) and wanted to know how they feel about their purchase.

It's worth it, and much like anything people hold off on (*cough*PSP*cough*), purchasing one instantly makes a LOT more stuff interesting to you.

If you have the money, a PS3 is worth it, without question.

MLB The Show's the only reason I bought my PS3 as early as I did, so I'd definitely say yes. Personally, I was playing the game (08) well beyond the season and into the new year.

I played 08 for three solid months, then sporadically til the day 09 came out. I'm sure I'll do the same with 09. I love sports games though.

If you love baseball games then yeah, it's worth it. Sports games are pretty much identical on PS3/360 except for baseball, where 09 takes the cake.

Heads up though, there are still issues with online play.

I'm not a big baseball fan (last baseball game I seriously played was RBI Baseball) and even I've been having fun with the Show the last two years.

Got in on The Show in '08, and haven't regret it since.

It's been worth it for me. I was desperate for a great baseball game and finally broke down and got a PS3 last December. I do kinda wish that this game was on the 360 though, I would be $400 richer.

But yeah, if you love baseball then its worth it.

I was in a similar boat as you, but my hype meter coincided with the gamestop 50% extra stacked trade and Killzones 2 release. I was fully satified with my 360, but I wanted to play Killzone and MGS4 and most importantly I was really craving playing anything Tekken.

I took the plunge and for probably 350 out of pocket and trading about 12 games, I now have a PS3 with 8 games.

I saw MLB 09 in Sams Club mis-priced at 35 bucks, so I decided to get it to try it out. The game offers so many options and it was a little intimidating to get into at first. I even test drove it for about an hour, decided it was too complex off of my initial impression and was going to go trade it back toward something else.

I got busy this afternoon and never made it to the store. So I decided to pop it back in for one more chance to win me over. And boy did it ever. Once I got into a regular game, it became so much fun with the pitcher/hitter battles. I could see myself playing this game a ton if I can discipline myself from buying some new games for the next few months.

I had not played a baseball game since the SNES days, and I am a hockey game player by heart. But when I saw some review sites claiming that MLB 09 is the best sports game of this current generation, I knew I had to stick with it.

The game is addicting as hell, rewarding to play, and it is a powerhouse with the options it offers, the gameplay it presents and the audio/visual/atmosphere interface it presents. This is a sports game, but to me it almost seems like the perfect blend of action with great RPG features in it. I love it. I'll still play my hockey games, but I will make room to play this as well.

So to sum up your question, I don't think any game is worth buying a system for. But get more then one game, and sure why not. Me, I didn't target getting a PS3 for this game, but now I have one, and can experience all the PS3 exclusives that I could not with 360 (I still have and love my 360 as well)

Do it if you have the money. This game does not disapoint. To me, the PS3 is finally justifying itself with the games it has available. The Blu-Ray functionality to me is just a bonus on top

EDIT: I didn't read you post fully. You have played MLB 09 already. So you know what it is like. I can tell you, I am enjoying Killzone, and Ratchet and Clank so far. I have MGS4, Uncharted and Valkyria Chronicles waiting in the wings. Even something like Unreal Tournament is getting new life breathed into it with a good patch.

Yes, yes, and yes.

It is like if you combined Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry together, took the best bits out of both games mixed them together, and metamorphosize them into a sports title this would be MLB 09 The Show.

Right now I own MLB 09 (sold 08 before 09 came out) and MGS4 on my PS3. All I need, but I will be picking up more. Sony is starting to step it up as a first party and there are plenty of cool games to get on the system now.

:lol That argument never gets old.

I bought a PS3 last year for MLB the show and havent regretted yet. Blu Ray +Killzone 2 and Uncharted. Seems like its worth it to me.

I bought mine for it.

At the time, it wasn't worth it because the library was ass forever.

Now...while you're taking home MLB 09 which is a few more years refined from what I bought it for, pick up Uncharted, Killzone 2 and Little Big Planet and go home and drool.

There's other good stuff too, and BluRay is very pretty.

Yes, hell yes.

Be prepared to get a little frustrated, since it's hard to hit at first. Takes some time to get good.

Also, be sure to get into Road To The Show. It freaking rules.

Love. This. Game.

I finished my review a week ago and it still hasn't come out of the PS3. I have Killzone 2 sitting there, ready to be played, but The Show remains in the machine.

Especially since you could theoretically join an army and fight a real war if you wanted to as well. :lol

I'm on the last level of Killzone 2 and have yet to finish it because of The Show so yea, definitely worth it.

Depends on how much you love baseball. I wouldn't say The Show is worth it alone, but if there are other titles you're interested in then I think it's a great 2nd console.

It's way better than 2k9, it's up to you if it's worth getting a PS3 over, considering the 360 and PS3 share most of the same games.

If you've got money to spare and are interested in some of the exclusives, then why not. Oh and if you happen to have a dual core PC (or better) with plenty of RAM, go download the ps3 media server application (google). I can now stream pretty much any video codec to my ps3 with no buffer whatsoever.

I've heard of many people buying PS3's lately not just for Killzone 2 but for MLB 09 The Show. So yes, you get Blu-Ray, The Show, LBP, MGS4, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, God Of War III. Its time to get a PS3. I've been a 360 guy so far and still love it, but I couldn't resist the PS3 anymore. Especially with the Sony Style $ back deals they keep running.

Nothing wrong with buying a console for a sports game (I bought a genesis for World Series Baseball back in the day) but never having played a game in the genre and then deciding to buy a console for one does strike me as odd. I love sports games so it makes sense to me but if you don't...

To each his own.

I played Little League Baseball on the NES which was super-awesome. And I have muddled around with sports demo's before -- but I played The Show on friends PS3 for hours on end.

Alright, sounds good. I'll go get a PS3 sometime this weekend then. I'm a med school student who magically has time to do that and play video games, so it's not like I have a shit -ton of money...actually, I do have a shit-ton of money but technically their med school'loans'. But I always have money to spare since I live on the low-end, eat a little, and I don't burn money on social events (although I might go to several baseball games when the season starts) But I realized I'm going to be stupidly in debt until I actually become a doctor so what's another 400 bucks ;p

Can't wait, man that game was sooooo fun. I thought I'd be bored out of my mind playing a baseball game but whaddya know.

Why would anyone enter a forum and ask a bunch of strangers whether he should pay for an investment no one else besides him is affected by ? :D

I bought my PS3 the week before MLB '07 came out. Coincidence? Nope.

And '09 is so much better. SO MUCH.

I really do feel like it's the sports game that could appeal to people who don't play sports games. So much strategy and depth. If you love baseball, then you NEED this game. Road to the Show is reason enough to buy it. Hell, I would probably buy a RTTS spinoff if they took it out of the main game. It's that amazing.

What the hell!!! I read a preview while on the shitter for this game for no reason (no longer a fan of baseball, no longer buy/play sports games) and thought "Hmmm sounds interesting" and remembered the timesplaying the old NES baseball games. Now I come in here and see this thread with all the positive replies.....

Am I going to fork over for a baseball game now????

You have a nice list of games there so I say go for it man. I'm not even into baseball but I saw some guy playing it and I was in shock. It looks like real life in HD.. the graphic whore in me is telling me to get it :P

"Yes, you will buy this game."

Jesus, you guys are tempting me to buy this. I am not even too much of a baseball fan, but the MLB games are incredible. I put countless hours into past PSP versions, and the thought of getting 09' running on my HDTV sounds so good. Maybe I can sell a few older games to justify it.

Absolutely worth buying a PS3 for. Won't find a better baseball game anywhere else. I've played it more than I have Killzone 2 so far, which is another game to buy a PS3 for.

Yes, yes of cour-- WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU? If you're a baseball fan oh hell YEAH!!!

Options:
Wait for MLB Powerpros
You could ... if you want to play in on a console in June/July or something.

MLB 2K9

What if I hate baseball? I can't stand watching the sport (enjoy the highlights and score charts on sports center, though)... but I just can't sit and watch a whole game. Will the Show... show me the light?

I mean EVERYONE raves about it. And I already have a PS3. But is it good enough to entertain someone who with few exceptions hates watching baseball?

Edit: nm, just noticed the demo on PSN. i'll just give that a whack.

I think so... I was the same way with watching baseball... When you fire up this game though and get into the pitcher /hitter battles with it's tight gameplay, you will change your tune.... try the demo or rent it to see what EVERYONE is saying...

by this very logic 17% of all GAF threads and post would go POOF

I loved 08 The Show, I LOVE 09 The Show.

Buy a PS3. Pick up The Show, MGS4, KZ2, and LBP. I'm sure I missed some, but those are the ones that JUMP out and scream hellllllllo.
