MLG Dallas 2010 - StarCraft II Tournament Thread

I don't understand why they give people an automatic 2 games.

What's the point behind that? Simply because one player defeated his opponent earlier in the tournament?

Jinro must have been really unlucky to not have qualified for the GSL2. Either that, or he's improved leaps and bounds since the last round of qualifiers.

Hopefully he actually makes it through to Season 3 of the GSL3 - he's a beast of a player.

One person lost, one person didn't lose.
So they need to make up the 2 games that they lost before to be on even footing.

Guys, remember, since the latest patch, Jinro and TLO both dropped to B-team status in the oGs internal ranking tournaments. That means there are a whole bunch of Koreans on oGs that outclass them. It's also why a bunch of oGs players qualified for GSL Open 2 but only TLO did and got knocked out immediately.

I wonder how well Ret and Huk will rank internally when they arrive. The fact that TLO and Jinro got further in MLG doesn't bode well for Ret and Huk's first month.

Yeah, that's their thinking behind it. It's stupid though. Most people agree that they should be counted as two completely isolated matches.

0-0 to a best of 3 (x2 possibly)
vs
2-0 Bo7

The only difference I see is that the loser would pick the map first?

If you meet again they make the game a best of 7 with the score of the previous best of 3 as the starting score. I believe both that rule and the double elimination format was taken over from the Halo tournaments by MLG. I don't mind the double elimination, but you're already punished by having to play extra games if you drop down to the loser bracket earlier, and having the extra punishment with the 'best of 7 with old score' rule makes things kinda weird. Also means that it can make a bigger difference who you encounter in the brackets than it usually does.

I remember a big thread of MLG folks asking feedback at TL.net and a lot of people specifically asking the bo7 rule to be changed. I think the MLG guy (not JP, someone higher up) basically said that it was the most fair and allowed the better player to win, so they're not going to change it.

I think Painuser just gg'd, so it's 1-3 now.

They should just broadcast this instead of having this lame coming soon screen. :(

He was winning about 13 mins into a match when it was stopped by MLG for being the "wrong map".

It should just be a normal best of 3 like any other game. :-/

They played Game 1 on Lost Temple, about 13 minutes in Tyler was winning and just won a battle, he used a slightly sneaky strategy that PainUser wasn't prepared for. Then an admin said that MLG hosted the game on the wrong map and made them restart, Tyler's strategy was now revealed so PainUser was able to deflect it. Winning Game 1 is huge because if you lose Game 2 you can pick the map for Game 3.

PainUser then won 2-0.

4 other matches happened on the wrong maps but because they finished before anyone noticed, they counted.

So all of the casters are apparently on lunch break according to an MLG guy. So we get this terrible view just of Tyler with no casting. So lame :|

Why the fuck aren't they casting this jesus christ this is dumb :|
I think the series started while the previous one was still going. I actually think it's for the best that they don't try to break into series in the middle, or line up games for being casted that could end up not being casted and waiting for nothing.

Like someone else said, it's more that MLG has such a huge bracket for the time it has (64 in 2 days or 128 in 3 days). I'm pretty happy how many games they managed to line up outside of caster breaks compared to Raleigh and DC.

BTW, I looked up the thread I was thinking of. Specifically, this comment by MLG Senior Vice President Lee Chen touches on the bo7 rule:
re: extended series/bo7. we'll get an article published laying out how it works precisely. In fact, I think JP posted on how it works when we announced the addition of SC2 to the circuit. But it's here to stay. And as an old PC LAN veteran, I'll say that I think its the fairest thing possible. We can debate the absolute value of "fair" sometime, but it is a system that MLG uses on EVERY game.
It's kinda weird since on the SotG episode after MLG DC the players on it pretty unanimously didn't like it, so they mostly do it to keep things consistent with the other MLG games (in other words, Halo).

If the first game that was stopped because of the wrong map stood and Tyler won, would score in this series start at 2-1 instead of 2-0?

With this many players at this point I think it was extremely stupid not to cast every game (there are four people left or something, wtf). I don't see why they couldn't cast the game after they were done with the previous match though, even if it was in the middle of the series. It's not like all three of the casters are doing anything important right now and considering they have 3 casters they could have staggered their breaks (wtf has jp been doing other than interviews)

Silly MLG. They will never learn. :/

Why did Tyler warp in his reinforcements at that pylon near his base instead of the forward pylon he just built? Could've helped that push.
