Mobile Game Recommendations

Does the search function work for anyone else?

Anyway, being bored at work I was very tempted to impulse buy some cell phone games though knowing my playtime with the games I purchased for my ipod, I decided against making impulse purchases.

I was wondering if people that have purchased cell phone games (I have Verizon, but I don't think it matters) could give their input on the games and whether they regret purchasing them.

We could use some type of format like:

Definitely Purchase

Recommended Purchase (YMMV)

Fun for 5 Minutes

Stay away from

If this is popular enough I'll keep the OP updated.

Doom RPG and Orcs & Elves are awesome. Tornado Mania is pretty good to pick up for a few minutes, and Metal Slug: Mobile Assault is pretty damn good.

I've also downloaded games for my phone out of boredom at work..

Lumines is surprisingly good, if not a bit complicated as they add a shitload of new modes/squares/special squares.

I also have Rainbow Six Vegas, it's ok I guess, I'm on the last level but never beat it.

I haven't played it, but I read a postmortem about a pillow fight game that looked neat. Good art.
Sexy Pillowfight is shit. Seriously.
It has 2 attack buttons that you just end up hammering away on. Absolutely no game in there at all.

Doom RPG is actually good? What kind of game is it?
Just a shot in the dark but I'd say it is probably an RPG.

And yeah it is supposed to be the best cell phone game to date from what I've heard/read. I can't say for sure though because I haven't played it myself.

I played DOOM RPG for a bit, but I didn't really like it. The interface just didn't click with me.

Tetris is a good buy, though. I think I play that more consistently than any other title that I own. It's always there, and it's always good fun.

Doom RPG is a first-person dungeon crawler. Orcs and Elves is the sequel to Doom RPG, it's fundamentally a better and longer game, but is missing the awesome license.

I've tried playing games on my phone but I just can't. Trying to use the keypad and such to control them is what gets me, even if it's a slow game like an RPG. It just feels terrible to my fingers. Besides, I almost always have a DS or PSP within arms reach anyway if I know I'm going to be bored somewhere, so why bother?

Doom RPG is a first-person RPG that feels a little bit like Eye of the Beholder (or more appropriately, Etrian Oddysey, lately).

That's just the perspective, though. Otherwise it's a pretty standard game.

I played Metoes by Gameloft on my mobile regiliously while on travleing recenty.

Blown away.
the 2nd mobile game that I have found fun (first being snake on my old Nokia)

Its gave me hope and peeked my interest in mobile gaming.

I'll check out some of these recommended ones too.

Tower Bloxx is the epitome of Mobile games, playable for minutes or hours and addictive as hell. YouÂ’re a city planner who has to decide where to place buildings on a gird for maximum population.
Construction sees you dangling a block on a crane, and dropping it onto your tower in hopes of creating a sturdy building. The better aligned the blocks are, the more people will flood into your creation. To add depth and a sense of achievement, you can get a combo for perfectly aligned pieces and a trophy roof for well made buildings.
Once your building is done, you can place it on your map, however taller, more populated buildings have rules about where they can be placed, leaving you with a head scratcher of how to make the most populated, productive city.
There is also a “Quick Mode” that gives you unlimited blocks and three lives, trying to create the tallest tower imaginable.

The game controls great, the building mini-game (which isn’t so mini, as it constitutes half of the game) is simplistic in nature, but weighty in design. The other half will get your brain into gear, and make you strive for well created buildings – both parts of Tower Bloxx draw on each other’s strengths for a well rounded game throughout pulling on your reflexes and puzzle skills.

As addictive as a Wario Ware game, but with enough substance to warrant the price tag; Tower Bloxx is cute, clever and everyone around you will want to have a go at creating the perfect building or city.

I wrote that about Towerbloxx ages ago. If you can't read it says "This game is loads of fun". However, as much as I like this game, I can't get into Digital Chocolate's other massive title, Rollercoaster Rush, not my thing.

The only game I keep playing on my mobile is an old b/w java game called "Furry Friends" by Mr. Goodliving (no longer sold afaik). The goal is to keep all 9 furries equally happy as long as possible by tickling them, each of them being mapped to the respective number key. Must be the only kind of mapping I find actually sufficiently comfortable on a mobile.

First of all, my site, Modojo, takes mobile games seriously. We've reviewed over 200 of them. I personally have probably reviewed at least 100. Besides us, IGN's wireless channel is also great - the editor is a stand-up guy and bags on the bad games and praises the good ones. His opinion overlaps most closely with mine out of all the people writing about mobile.

Second off, you'll learn that way moreso than in the console world, quality really IS company-dependent. EVERY mobile game company has some stinkers, but in general Digital Chocolate, Glu, and Gameloft put out good stuff (excluding gameloft's 2D platformers). That's not to say you should ignore Namco, Capcom, Sega, EA Mobile, I-Play etc. - but just know that their titles aren't as universally high-quality.

Third - let's get into the games.

TOWER BLOXX

Half timing/rhythm, half city-building

SUPER KO BOXING

A spiritual sequel to Super Punch Out

ROLLERCOASTER RUSH
http://www.modojo.com/reviews/mobile/rollercoaster_rush/20060907/375/

Go fast enough to make the riders happy, but too fast, and you'll crash...

GHOST RECON 2
http://www.modojo.com/reviews/mobile/ghost_recon_2/20070517/511/

It even has a cover system

TIME CRISIS
http://www.modojo.com/reviews/mobile/time_crisis_mobile/20060113/195/

The screen is split into a grid, and you press the numpad to fire in that section. Works surprisingly well.

DINER DASH / ZUMA

Most mobile ports kinda suck, but both these are GREEEAAAAT translations, that control really well, and have more depth than most mobile releases.

TRIVIAL PURSUIT MOBILE DELUXE
http://www.modojo.com/reviews/mobile/trivial_pursuit_mobile_deluxe/20070326/487/

Don't laugh; it seamlessly pulls new questions down from a central server, has online multiplayer, a question of the day, etc. A great package for trivia buffs.

PEOPLE'S CHOICE HANGMAN
http://www.modojo.com/reviews/mobile/peoples_choice_hangman/20070509/505/

Again, don't laugh. You can submit your own puzzle packs and download new themed word packs as well. A nice diversion.

NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS
http://www.modojo.com/reviews/mobile/tim_burtons_nightmare_before_christmas/20061212/442/

Wait, hear me out. This one is actually an oldschool, top-down block pushing puzzle title, like Lolo. It also has over 75(!!) levels.

Super Boom Boom
http://www.modojo.com/games/mobile/super_boom_boom/

It's all about timing. You must pitch a bomb upwards into a series of moving baskets, to reach the top of the stage. It starts out as just baskets, but before long pulleys, birds, poles and all kinds of other obstacles enter the mix.

I've been trying out a few recently and I've found Super KO Boxing to be probably one of the best. Puzzle Bloxx is a bit too simplistic for me, but Tornado Mania has a bit more depth.

I'm surprised that GDJustin mentioned avoiding the Gameloft sidescrollers because, while I've only played about two levels of it, I've found the Splinter Cell game to be enjoyable. It feels quite Flashbackesque actually.

Back in my days of being young we had snake and the much more modern and expensive snake 2 and were happy with it!

I bought a motorbike game on my phone and didn't like it. It's one of the few things I didn't rebuy when my friend lost my phone.

One thing to be wary of: none of the major sites review the low-end versions of mobile games, which means that buying games for my phone (a Nokia 3215) is risky. While the low-end versions of Doom RPG and Orcs & Elves are basically the same as their high-end counterparts (aside from graphics and sound), the low-end version of GoW: Betrayal is a choppy, clunky, repetitive mess that has none of the gameplay in this trailer, and which was clearly thrown together as an afterthought.

Ah... yeah. Gameloft's action platformers are cooler. I was thinking more of Rayman Raving Rabbids, Shrek, their Pirate game... they all use the same engine that's aged quite a bit. A little too clunky for my taste.

Thanks GDJustin, I agree mobile games should not be slept on. My only probalem is half of these games aren't available on Verizon.

TibiaME was fun little online game 1-2 years ago, its an online MMORPG for cell phones. Dont know if there's still players online but its worth a try:

And finally a nice little flight "simulator", FreeFlight. Or more like a 3d java demo, but worth a try too. Hey its free:)

My mobile (HTC S710) is based on windows mobile 6, and has a slightly higher resolution. Apparently a lot of the traditional java based games don't seem to work all that well. Some seem to have minor grafical glitches, but others simply hang.

Any suggestions for good windows mobile based games would be much appreciated.

Actually, speaking in very general terms, Verizon is probably the best US carrier in terms of mobile games. Verizon supports the BREW game platform, and many of my favorite mobile games are BREW, not Java.

Of the games I put in my post above, Zuma, Diner Dash, Super KO, Ghost Recon, Rollercoaster Rush, Time Crisis, and Trivial Pursuit are all BREW games and are all available on verizon (I just checked).

Shameless self-promotion: You could pick up every title I've ever worked on while I was at EA Mobile :)

Includes, but not limited to, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, Bejeweled, Tetris, Scrabble, Mahjong for the iPod, Sims Pool for iPod, Sims Bowling, etc.

Lots more in 3 years. :)

skyforce is insanely awesome. I have the full version for my 6620. It's a full blown super awesome shmup that controls like a dream with my 6620's stick.
