Mod the Dualshock 4 with Xbox One analog sticks

I am now going a little crazy about changing things around on these controllers. I am gonna do one that has a full white front and a black back.

I ordered the white front plate, but it's coming from China and there's no telling how long it's gonna be. So, in the meantime, I'm rocking the black and white look with this controller. It has white xbox one thumbsticks and a full set of white ps4 buttons.

Looks awesome. Loving that...

deadzones are a software thing. but i did notice that that a new DS4 has almost none when using the web browser.

Yeah the deadzones of the Dualshock 4 are amazing, best ever. But it really pisses me off when games don't take advantage of it because they're coded for cross platform compatability.

It's just a piece of plastic, all of the things that actually control anything are unchanged.
i have a dualshock 4 that I bought from ebay that I had requested xbone thumbsticks to put in, but I have noticed that the reaction times are not exactly the same as with my dualshock 4 with the regular thumbsticks. could this be an installation thing?

Should be tough to screw with anything on an installation either. All of the handling is done inside the housing, the stick itself is just plastic that is sitting on top of a metal peg. Xbone sticks are marginally taller, but it's VERY small, so it's got a tiny bit more precision at the cost of having to move the sticks very slightly more. I'd be honestly surprised if you could even notice that though, but moving the stick to the same angle should still provide the exact same result.

it does not though. if i push the stick up, the camera will pan up slower than if i push the stick up on a regular dualshock 4. it's not very slightly more, at least i don't think so. i notice it the most when i play rocket league and miss crucial turns and moves because the xbone sticks don't respond as quick.

so could it be an installation thing?

Only if you physically damaged the controller. I'd say swap the sticks back and try, if you feel like they're 'normal' again then idk what to tell you, that's entirely psychosomatic, but if they're still borked then yeah something got fucked.

Is there any way to get legit first party Xbox One thumbsticks (without opening an Xbox One pad) or at least one from the same manufacturer? I hate that the caps made by third parties have different kinds of rubber on top.

Also, the screws on my DS4 are pretty screwed up (ha-ha). I won't be abled to screw them in again after performing the mod. Can I buy replacements for those?

I'm in Europe btw. Thanks in advance.

I'm probably going to mod my DS4 sometime soon. Does anyone have a link for a battery and a set of Xbone thumbsticks they ordered? Preferably white or dark blue.

All I found on Amazon were either bad reviews or sketchy. Thanks.

Check Ebay for the sticks. You'll get them way cheaper then anything on Amazon.

The new thumbsticks on stock DS4s being sold now, have the addressed the wear out issue? I'm trying to decide what to do about replacing my slowing degrading DS4 I have now. I'm deciding whether I should buy a new DS4 or switch to the Xbox One controller. I'm also considering replacing the sticks on my existing DS4 but issues go beyond the peeling stick cover (sticking triggers). I love the DS4 layout but I don't want to buy a replacement if it's doomed to fall apart again. I can't go back to the Xbox 360 due to that d-pad but that thing is a tank. My understanding is that the Xbox One has a decent d-pad but I've seen complaints about bumpers, so I'd ultimately I'd love to stick with a DS4 if the build quality issues are addressed.

Edit:
Oh, this is for PC, if that wasn't obvious.

Anyone here attempted to repair the joystick itself? I ordered a replacement and tried to desolder the old joystick out but it wont budge. Have a 40w soldering iron think I need to go hotter.

Anyone here have any success?

You just need the correct equipment. Are you using flux and a desoldering braid?

Yes, but using a liquid based flux maybe I need paste flux? I have a desoldering wick, just seems like it's not getting hot enough. It got a fair amount off but seems like there is still some at the base or in the hole.

Quick question: Where do I find those clear shells?

What controller is that? Looks awesome!

I had the PS1 see through controller as my main controller right through that generation, I need that controller!

Hey, sorry I saw these posts late. You can find clear shells on eBay. Although, sony came out with an official transparent color called "crystal".

I would post the links but I'm at work & mobile.

Heat is escaping through the PCB, you need a heatgun or reflow workstation really. You can brute force with a fat soldering tip, some flux on the joint, some solder on the iron tip and then mashing it all together with the wick in between. Or just use a bit of solder on the tip and start scraping the solder away from the joint, that is if you can get it to melt. Should be easier to melt without wick in the way.

I did this a while ago and even while only getting "not genuine" sticks it's still 100x better than before.
So it's worth it 1000% , get the ones you can get and DO IT

hmm how do you guys know if you're getting legit oem parts of some knock-off? speaking of which this thread is 1.5 years old now. how did the swap hold up for you?

thinking of doing this on my newer ds4s as my l3 seems like its alot harder to press when moving the stick in a direction (i.e. sprinting in many shooters)

I haven't been able to find a source that sells OEM sticks either.
Would love to as my sticks are crumbling away more and more.

same. none of the sellers on amazon seem to be legit oem parts if the reviews are any indication. ebay listings aways have OEM in the short description but in the body "oem-like" lol shady. have a feeling a lot of the 5 star reviews are being posted immediately after installing the sticks instead of waiting to see if they actually hold up.

thinking of trying to see if i can find a used xbone controller for cheaper just to try this lol

also curious if people who have tried the kontrolfreek alphas and have done this mod...is the increase in stick height comparable? thumbs got tired after awhile using the alphas. top of the sticks were also wider on those though.

Alright, so I just got two pairs of E-MODS Xbox One analog replacement thumbsticks from Amazon. To note, I had already changed the sticks on my Dualshock 4 to a pair of aluminum ones that were about the same circumference size and stick length as the default Dualshocks. They were aesthetically nice but their grip was terrible, and I've been playing a lot of Overwatch lately and that just wasn't flying -- so I'm pretty familiar with the process of swapping sticks out at this point.

Installation went fine when I got the new Xbox One sticks, but upon use I noticed that they would sometimes get jammed in certain positions. It looks like these sticks just barely don't fit. I've already tried re-opening them and making sure I didn't have the controller's PCB placed wrong and causing the sticks to rub against the well, but it seems that by default they just are slightly too big. The problem is a bit worse on the left stick than the right -- the right only very occasionally jams in place -- and I've jokingly come to call it my "autorun" mod.

Anyway, I think I could simply use a tool to grind down the connector of the stick so that it mounts just a little bit lower on the inside. The jamming I'm experiencing isn't very rough, as in I can easily just push my way right through it when it happens, but sometimes just letting go of the stick during play and letting it snap back into its default position doesn't work, which is obviously causing unwanted movement and aiming commands in games at times.

Just wondering if GAF has any suggestions on what kind of tool to use to wittle down the plastic a bit? I am honestly thinking I don't need to grind it down all that much, I just don't know what kind of tool would be strong enough and small enough to get the job done.

I managed to get a pair of OEM sticks for about £3.50 from eBay so I decided to give this mod a go.

So far it's working really well, though a weird thing I've noticed is that the idle position of the left stick isn't quite center, in that it points up ever so slightly. It doesn't seem to affect usage or gameplay thankfully. I did look at my regular DS4 though and it appears to be a similar case for that. Maybe this is just a result of the DS4's 'amazing' build quality?

Yeah the deadzone and whatnot are going to be controlled by the actual mechanism underneath the stick, not the plastic stick itself. That's just your DS :/

I switched the sticks in my DS4, and the R2 stopped working even though I strung the spring in perfectly and it feels like it should. Is there a little thing I missed in that side?

Loosen up the PCB screw and don't over tighten the others over tightening any of the screws cause this especially the screw that holds the PCB in place

those are most likely no actual OEM sticks. you can see the horizontal cut the machine made. dont worry im sure 99% of us have Chinese knockoffs anyway.

I installed xbox one sticks from OneSoul on Amazon last week. Initially I thought it worked well, until I started playing shooters again. The right thumbstick made me turn right really slow compared to other directions. I tested the input function on my pc and sure enough the right stick ranged from 89-92% of input when I held the right stick to the right. I swapped them back to my peeling stock sticks and I can finally aim again. The right stick ranged from 96-99% of input on my pc when held to the right.

I'm not sure what made those xbox one sticks not allow me to look right all the way as I've tried testing my input with no sticks and just the actual little pegs underneath. It was 100% when pushed in all directions.

I'm really happy with how it looks, but the front housing that I ordered feels just slightly off. I might be imagining it.
Hey, where did you come by those white buttons?

They fit!

I used Elite sticks in this one, it was about $20 for the set (with the different attachments) on Amazon. Feels kinda funny to have these heavy metal analogs in a cheapish feeling plastic controller, but I actually like the weight they add to it. Plus there's a button on the back that drops right stick sensitivity by like 50% while you hold it down... ;-)
