Modding a PS2 slim

I'm looking to pick up a PS2 slim to play Japanese import games I missed last gen. I own a 60 gigger US PS3, so I can't play Japanese PS2 games. I gave my fat PS2 to a cousin. How would I go around modding a slim PS2 to play Japanese import games? I remember the old models supported mod chips. I don't know about the slim PS2s.

Also do you guys have any recommendations on Japanese PS2 games as well. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I used Swap Magic which was real easy, and only involved applying a few sticky "buttons" in a few places (no screwdriver or anything needed). Not sure if this is what you wanted though as it does require using a boot disc whenever you want to play an import.

And I still need to get a new damn disc as my old one is useless :(

Holy shit, Swap Magic lets you play SNES games?!

Edit: Oh, it's for ROMs and shit, disappointment.

You probably aren't going to get very many good responses over here due to piracy police, but swap magic does indeed work. Some have better "tools" with it than others. It can be a pita to get them installed so the swap actually works. I think older versions of SM don't have a very big TOC so they won't load newer games. You might get better information from the max console forums. PLENTY of 1337-skeen kids over there.

My vote however, is for SM. It doesn't void the warranty, and boots any region with only 30 seconds of your time and a simple swap.

My friends and I used the slim flip-top and swap magic 3.X for the Narutimate Hero PS2 games and it worked great.

For the flip-top, you had to open your PS2 up, but these newer ones they're talking about are easier. I've never used them, so I don't know if they have any drawbacks.

I used swap magic and a flip top on my fat ps2. I've heard that it wouldn't load dvd9 games but i don't know how many imports were on those. My wrestling games weren't.

I'd buy a fat PS2 with some kind of return policy. Soft mod/swap trick it, then see if it plays all the types of games you want to import (CD/DVD/BlueBottom/etc). If it doesn't, just return it for another one.

If you are hell bent on going with a slim, google around and make sure the version slim you get works without problems before you buy it.
