Fastest-selling Call of Duty title reaches new sales milestone

Activision’s hugely popular Modern Warfare 2 has unlocked a new achievement – over 20m copies of the game have been sold since release.

CFO Thomas Tippl revealed the news to investors at the publisher’s E3 2010 conference. He said: "Modern Warfare 2 has sold more than 20m units against an install base of 55m on Xbox 360 and PS3."

CEO Bobby Kotick added: “The Call of Duty franchise has reached life-to-date revenues of $3bn.”

The game was originally released on November 10th last year on Xbox 360, PS3, PC and DS and went on to become the best-selling game of 2009.

Activision has since released a DLC expansion pack consisting of five extra maps for Xbox Live and PSN. The next Call of Duty title – Black Ops – is scheduled to hit retail on November 9th this year.


Kotick also told investors at last night’s E3 event that he wants Activision to take a slice of the $3bn pre-owned market.

Hate Kotick, hate Actvision, but i love MW2. Well deserved. MW just "gets it", while other shooters are just not for everyone.

I used to hate FPS, i couldn´t get into them. Them i bought MW and MW2 and now i´m totally hooked on those games. I guess the realistic setting is what got me into the game.

There´s no need to look further, MW is this generation´s GTA.

And haters gonna hate of course.

20 million + is a pretty elusive club. Only a handful of titles have ever sold that much.

Should put Modern Warfare 2 into the Top 10, maybe Top 8 of best selling titles, ever.

I've played Red Dead Revolver, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, Earthworm Jim and Starcraft 2 in the past 3 months. I don't believe any fit into your three categories unless you shoehorn them in to suit your argument.

Perhaps you could read GAF less and play better games?

I didn't know "video games" meant stuff that makes the top ten on sales lists. Did you think gaming was dying when GTA, Halo, and Madden were biggest selling games out there?

That's pretty amazing for what boils down to pretty much the dumbest first person shooter I ever played. At least the campaign is. I spent the entire campaign looking like that guy in the TF2 pic that Diablohead posted.
