So I've been storing some cash in a safe in my closet for about a year now. Today I open the safe up and the cash is covered in mold. It wasn't wet, my closet isn't wet, so I don't really understand how it happened.

Anyway, any tips for this? I brushed most of it off but it's still kind of dusty and weird feeling. If I take it to a bank can they exchange it for new stuff? Or any tips on cleaning it?

Thanks for this! Used this method and they seem ok, probably gonna turn them in for new ones when they're dry.

I don't have any pics but it was super weird, they were covered in piles of this golden-brown dust. Apparently it happens because they're covered in germs and made of fabric so when you store them like that they get nasty. Hopefully a ziplock and some of those silica gel packs will prevent it from happening again.

Give it to me, I will remove the mold for you.

I keep a stash in my safe at home too and noticed there's a distinct paper money smell, so I try to air it out on weekends when I'm at home. Glad I've been doing that.
