Months Later, Rocket League Is Still Played Nightly

Catchy game, after a long MGS gameplay I play like 1 hour every night . days ago won like 7 games in a row with some random parthers.

I've never had a primarily multiplayer focused game sink it's hooks in me quite like rocket league has. I'll play a little bit at a time but I've been playing consistently since it came out.

Just platinumed it, got the air goal trophy, and scored my first ridiculous buzzer beater just yesterday. Easily some of the most fun I've had with any video game.

Closing in on 1000 online matches played and still feels as fresh as ever. It'll always live on my XMB and I can definitely see it being one of my games of the generation.

So while theres people here - what are the advanced tips people have been using/learnt?

I have an ok ground game with zero aerial skills and I only think Im better than most novices purely because I just don't run after the ball so wouldn't say Im that skilled. Im trying to map a picture of how the ball interacts with the arena - particular the curved parts of the edges - that obviously leads to useful centres/passes dependent on how the ball hits them.

I do wish I used the single jump more as it seems more accurate and converts my momentum more into the ball. I just have a habit of double tapping jump too much.

Rocket League is great but man fuck just about every other person playing it seems. Community is just awful and there doesn't seem to be any punishment for quitting a match, so quitters just bail after a goal is made like there's no way to come back. Otherwise you get the people who spam the quick commands 10 times over. It was great at the start, but feels like the worst stuck around.

I feel like this game would be really amazing if you had 6-8 friends that you could just play against.

Got into the beta and to be honest I hated it.. Gave it another shot on PS+ and it finally clicked and I play it nightly like OP.

Driving reminds me of Transformers WFC in a way which is probably why I like it so much.

Only had one bad online experience so far. So don't mind playing with casuals. If anyone wants to play add me on PSN (cth42)

What do people mean by toxic community? Those emote spammers? I do wish there was an option to tun those off.

I don't get it either with people saying toxic community? I've yet to have a single bad runin in my hundred hours of play. and Thank fuck we can mostly only use emotes since typing is much harder to do inbetween playtime. Emotes have a hilarious charm to it imo. Always gets me when everyone says "Great Pass!" when someone hits it in their own goal. Compared to the shitfest I've seen in the CoD/Halo crowd this seems like nothing.

I realize maybe it's on PC community where it can be annoying since it's much easier typing on a keyboard but isn't it crossplay? lol

I wish the DLC was better.

I want ball skin DLC so bad, and custom HUD, and team colours when playing with a party

The car dlc is okay. The B2F car is awesome. I want low riders and jeeps, convertibles and ambulances, firetrucks, etc

I buy the dlc to support the devs, but I swear they could pump out better dlc

Playing Rocket League almost daily. I keep coming back to it and playing with friends with a high skill level is so damn satisfying with aerial goals and passes, but at the same damn time frustrating when we hit a rock.

So simple but yet so competitive. Love it!

Agree. Haven't bought any DLC from Rocket League yet because of the quality of it. The Back to the Future DLC looks really rad though. Super excited about that even if it is only a "new car skin" like the other.

New modes are welcome also!

I played a tonne at launch, 100 hours in the first 3 weeks. But ive since stopped. I hit a wall around 700 doubles. Wasn't getting any better, any aerials were pretty much flukes etc.

Tried spending some time in practice mode but after 5 mins I was bored and quit.

This game can be great fun with the right people. A few days ago I was in a game with randoms where we blasted the opposite team by a score of 16-0.

Never seen people dropping out of the game on the opposing team so quickly.

I played it every night from July to September, then I stopped playing as regularly when Destiny Taken King came out. It's still tied for my GOTY with Witcher 3 though. I'll get back into it when the DeLorean comes out next week.

I wish the DLC was better.

The most recent DLC was super underwhelming. I'll buy it at some point but nothing in it is a must-have, unlike the DeLorean which is cool as hell. Supporting a great dev like Psyonix would be the main reason for getting it.

16-0? I only ever get to 4-0 before the other team forfeits. In ranked anyway. Haven't played Exhibition in awhile perhaps the other team will suffer through it or they will all quit and get replaced.

I put a few hours in and I've had a blast. My problem is that I can't take it seriously. I play it basically to laugh and have a good time. Meanwhile, everyone else is losing their shit.

I've been playing it a lot with my cousin, the good thing is that we're both awful at it so it's just fun. We stay till the end of the match, even if we're being destroyed, because there's nothing more frustrating than quitters.

This is a good way to play it, I see so many pissed off people even on unranked games and I really don't get why.

I love Rocket League but I'm kind of disappointed by the lack of grouping between PC and PS4. I have a bunch of friends on PC and on PS4 and we just want to play together :(

I think they said they were working on it, is there any news on that matter?

Rocket League is one of those games that I'll always play. Convinced a bunch of coworkers/friends to buy it and we all play and shoot the shit.

Great game. I lost interest once matchmaking started pairing me against professional teams. It's not fun playing with randoms with no mics against a great team that's communicating. No one wants to play goaltender, everyone attacks the ball instead of laying back for an opportunity to score off a pass or rebound.

Most games I play, even non ranked, people will quit after they are a goal or two behind. Leaving a match intentionally should count as a loss on your record. It doesn't bother me too much, but it is annoying trying to play when new people keep getting dropped in and then leaving multiple times a match. I hope they make that change at some point.

Emote spamming doesn't bother me, and the only time I've seen any cursing or racial slurs have been when people have been congratulating each other. Which...I guess is better? Technically?

Also I can't wait for the new map types!

I've had constant stream of games where people are being super shitty the whole time. It happens far more in ranked than unranked. People after 1 goal repeatedly telling you that you suck dick and to forfeit or calling you a salty bitch everytime they score. Your own teammates calling you garbage when they have 0s across the board. I see it way more in team 3v3s with people showing off for their friends though. I could fill a wall with all the stupid shit people talk even outside of just spamming emotes like an idiot. The further you go up ranks, the worse it gets because people think they're better than they are. This doesn't even mention teammates griefing. It's not the end of the world but it's still awful.

I've also played around 2000 games, so I've just had more time in general to see it.

Yeah, it's really frustrating because I have friends on PS4 I want to play on PC too.

Last I heard they said they were looking into it but it would require completely overhauling their matchmaking structure so don't expect it to happen soon.

It is but voice and text chat does not work between different versions. The only thing PS4 and PC players can both see when playing together is the d-pad quick chat. So you could have two PC team mates flaming each other the entire game and if you're on PS4 you'd have no idea.

Rocket league is without a doubt the best sports game of this year if not up there with some of the best games overall as well. I won't say GOTY since Bloodborne and Witcher 3 released the same year but then again I'm not playing either of those still, I'm playing Rocket League

Basically this is the first major level up. Knowing when to power slam and when to just bump it. Doing that will also aid in learning hitboxes and dynamics of hitting.

Game just turned up in my library one day. Is it cos I ordered a Steam controller?

Spent two nights with the game so far and am deeply, deeply impressed. Bought PES around the same time and haven't been that interested in it. There's a constant level of challenge available, and the short matches mean it's so easy to get back off the floor and try again (in my case).

Anecdote concerning embarrassingly poor play, and the 'toxicity' of the community ... In my first matches I was responsible for some own goals and giving opponents scoring opportunities. Although the events made me cringe, the replays turned out to be a lot kinder ... It seemed more like my actions were valiant but unlucky, rather than incompetent and stupid. From that point on, I forgave myself and everyone else, permanently.

I really wish I could play this game. Persistent online lag issues (car jolting back and fourth) ruined it for me despite my internet being good.

on another note I wonder why Rocket League became such huge success while Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars (its predecesssor) did not, they are basically the same game.
I think it's a case of perfecting the formula they'd built. A facelift, a big launch and most importantly, an extremely marketable name which is more aligned with the sport that inspired it. I'm sure a bit of luck and timing played their part as well. It would make for an interesting marketing study, if you were into that kind of thing.

Robot Roller-Derby Disco Dodgeball has a lot in common with SARPBC, in that it's a bit of a 'version 1' concept with a mouthful of name, ripe for a Rocket League style makeover. Although I think Rocket League has stolen all the thunder for now.

I mean, I don't think people should underestimate the impact of having a good name instead of a godawful one.

Rocket League is truly a great "pure" game. It's a game that's easy to learn and understand, and not bogged down with unnecessary complexities, but keeps you coming back because of so many addictive qualities. I have a feeling that there will still be a lot of people playing Rocket League years from now.

Same here, most definitely my GOTY. Nothing comes closer to real football than this -- including FIFA and PES.

It is one of the best conceptual games released this year. It is so simple, yet hard to master.

Agreed, game is awesome. Simple enough for anyone to pick up, play and have a sense of what to do right away (so it's great for playing with friends) yet because you're given so much control over the vehicle and the fact that the action isn't arcane--just angles--you always feel as if you can improve and do cooler stuff.

While this may sound ridiculous, as you're playing soccer/hockey with rocket powered cars, it really does capture the feeling of playing a sport far better than most "realistic" sports games. Feels amazing to set up your friends/teammates, putting them in a position to succeed, and it feels just as bad when you totally mess something up because you're in complete control of what you're doing.

And along those lines, doing flashy stuff (or failing spectacularly in an attempt) isn't just a case of say, holding down turbo and running at the rim for a dunk or something like that, it's all you.

In conclusion, I enjoy this video game.

Just curious ... Does anyone use car-cam for anything?

Surely ball-cam has to be the basis for successful play?

I use it for lining up a full boost charge. Can't be missing those at critical moments. All the other time is ball cam. I haven't found any advantages to using car cam offensively or defensively.

Pretty much use it to flick between views when running back into defence and maybe get a handle on where my team mates are (in case theres already someone covering)

Its like 95% ball cam, 5% car cam. I expect wall shots are far easier with car cam but again not a trick Ive learnt really yet...

I'm finally getting new internet tomorrow and I can't wait to be able to hop back into Rocket League. The 300+ ping I was getting on my apartment's free WiFi killed my desire to play anything online.
