It's too bad that everyone's getting caught up on the "price cut" thing; this was a good interview.
Yeah, very interesting read. Specifically when he gets asked about Sony not using moneyhats anymore.:D

You know, just because the PR guy for the competition says it in an attempt to rationalize their own lack of price drop, doesn't make it true.

Please, somebody - travel back in time a week and find me a $499 PS3. Travel back in time a month. I hate to go with the Sony mouthpieces on this one, but it's pretty disingenuous to use "the 20 gig PS3 doesn't exist" as a talking point for months only to now turn it around and say "there was always a $499 PS3."

I wonder how long it will be until 60GB PS3's are similarly "supply constrained"

Part of the magic of multiple SKUs is no one can figure out very simple things like whether a product has dropped in price or not.

My SAM's Club has had a stack of them since January.

So that's where they all were.

I live in a major metropolitan area, and have never seen a 20GB in a store. I used to argue that the $499/20GB was a valid option vs Xbox 360, but long ago stopped since they haven't been available.

If I want a car and it's $18,000 without a cd player and $19,000 for one with the cd player. The next week they put the cd player in the $18,000 base model and put a dvd player in the $19,000 model. The car price did not change....just the options.

Yeah, there's 2 ways to look at it. In the eyes of the consumer the price didn't change. Not many care about how many GB's they're getting or whatever. That wasn't the issue.

How much do they cost now that the 60GB is at $499?

It's still $542 (includes an extra SixAxis). I keep watching to see if they cut them, because if they don't, they'll never sell now.

At CAG there have been some reports, a couple of months ago, of some SAM's dumping 20GB for like $300. SAM's doesn't have global clearance and my store has hung onto them.

Moore is absolutely correct. There is no price cut. Still two SKUs at $599 and $499. I sure as hell dont see any price cut and nor will the general public/mass market

Yeah, I have to agree. It's not insignificant--it's just more like a hardware revision than a price cut. If Sony were only selling one SKU to begin with, at $499, and then they changed the specs in a similar way, nobody would call it a price cut. Cutting prices addresses elastic demand in a way that adding features does not; if consumers found $499 and $599 to be too high a barrier to entry, I think they will generally find $499 and $599 + new features to also be too high a barrier to entry.

I suspect that Sony will get a small bump from people that were on the verge of buying the product anyway, and then their sales will level out at approximately the same place they were before.

Very good analogy. Do people really think that the only thing stopping people from buying a ps3 was the extra 40gb?

And if you can't find the 18,000 model anwhere, and then they stop making/shipping it altogether....

That's pretty much my point....in my car analogy, you're still getting the same ****ing car so the only that changed was you get to play a cd instead of a tape.

So they've added greater value at the same prices. Which to me is not a price cut

Way to dodge the point :lol
And what about the 60GB ?

And, what about adding value at a higher price, peter ? :p
