More great video game journalism

Actually, the part in that piece that made me go "whaaaat?" was this...

And the ability to tune the battle mechanics let you adjust each fighter's repertoire of moves.
Now, color me crazy, but I thought only the later home versions allowed moves to be turned off, as a handicap in the VS mode?

afaik the guy who wrote the article didn't even play it--I mostly hung near the Dead Rising table, which was like 2 away from the SF2HF one...and when he was actually there, all he did was stand over someone and watch.

Not to say that does anything for the flowery language, but yeah. :p

The game is, in a nutshell, intended to be an arcade-perfect re-creation of the classic entry in the Street Fighter series that 2D fighting aficionados have long crowned one of, if not the, best entry in the SFII series.

That's some messed up comma work going on there...

The whole article, is it not an article, is a mess, and did not meet my skyscraping-esque expectations that I was faced, on my computer.

Your alchemy of expectations were too high.

Man, with all you assholes sitting around all day long, I'm so glad I got the fuck out of games "journalism."

While I've never had one of my articles as the target of GAF or any other major boards (that I'm aware of anyway), I feel like I would deserve it if I was getting paid to put out trash. Maybe it was just an intern that wrote this (most likely scenario), but there are TONS of talented writers that would kill for an opportunity to write for a site like Gamespot. Seeing an article of this poor quality is kind of a slap to the face.

Well then, you might get a chuckle to know that Ricardo Torres is Gamespot's previews overlord. In the kingdom of games and spots, THE BUCK STOPS WITH HIM (and his boss Greg Kasavin).

A lot of folks here have really intelligent things to say, but writing a good article isn't as easy as you think. In fact, I doubt most of GAF who so criticize game journalists can do it much better themselves. I'm not saying they don't have a right to call out shite writing, but that seems to be the point you're making: there are folks (presumably, here on GAF) who would kill for an opportunity to write for a site like Gamespot.

I've tried recruiting writers from GAF. I've found two consistently good ones: drohne and wellington. Trust me, it isn't that easy.

I know it's hard, I've been writing articles online for about two years now. I was *this* close to accepting an IGN intern position but turned it down because I was engaged and unwilling to relocate at the time. Writing/reporting is MUCH harder than discussing, but since this is the internet, we have a duty to ourselves to act like we could only do better.

I think it's the rift between "bullshitting" and "quasi-legitimacy" that makes it as such. I mean sure, you could type out a thousand words on a re-release of SF2...mainly because you assume your audience will know it inside and out. When you write for a more general audience, it's like trying to describe god--something most everyone's aware of, but you're assuming that nobody understands.

God, that was a shitty metaphor.

It's easy to be an asshole to someone who's getting paid to do work a middle school student could best.

:lol

On a related note, most general audience mags and newspapers are written at a grade 4-6 level.

I guess...but the grammatical errors alone in that article warrant criticism.

*whistles*

that's why everyone needs a good editor... ;)

Either way, I seriously can't remember him even laying hands on the controller for SFIIHF (and he's a very noticable man), which is relatively disappointing that he'd do a hands-on whenever he never laid his hands on it. :X

It's funny how you can bash someone who never played a game yet you feel you can review a football game after playing it for less than 4 hours. If anyone else wants to lose their credibility, please "hire" Matlock..

What the hell are you talking about? I said I disliked Madden's gameplay, and that was in no way a "review." :p

Meh, I think Matty does a fine job. It's easy to find a disagreement with anybody's reviews/impressions/previews/news posts at some point. If it becomes a trend, it's much easier to hate on them though.

I've taken criticism for giving Super Monkey Ball Touch & Roll an 8.5, but most of the critics have let it slide due to the fact that I'm normally not too far out of line with the mainstream.

Game reviews, while great in some ways, are a problem and a joke in other ways. For starters, there are way less hidden gems, or games you end up forcing yourself to love, due to the Internet and game reviews. As much as it hurt back in the day to pick up a stinker of a game, most of the time you either forced yourself to enjoy some aspect, or learned to love the game. These days, there's just so many opinions floating around, that it's hard not to listen to. It's really hard to avoid checking out reviews before you buy a game these days. I don't know exactly what I'm trying to say, but I think that the overabundance of opinions has made it less likely to enjoy a flawed game, and accept it for what it is. UI bet we could all name a TON of games we would have never purchased had we had the amount of online resources and reviews like we have today. On that same token, I bet there would have been a lot of games that we would have regretted not purchasing or giving a chance, due to that fact as well. Actually, I think I will start a thread about this. :lol

games are serious fuckin' business

only the deadly earnest ombudsmanship of tony barrett can save games journalism from an ignoble collapse

let's see them serious faces, folks

grr

let's get out there and have dialogues! about games! david jaffe!

LET'S TALK ABOUT TALKING ABOUT GAMES

jesus, this navel gazing is getting embarrassing, folks! don't we have some games to cover? talking about WHAT WE YOUR VIDEOGAMING JOURNALISM FOLKS DO is self-aggrandizing, tedious, and most of all completely and utterly without any fundamental application.

take away: work on your writing (as ever), don't forget your audience (you do), and stop talking about yourself like you matter (what what)!

Now that I know it can actually happen, I am never leaving GAF. All I have to do now is, uh, write posts that are not dumb.

starting right after this one!

That'll be harder than you think. :lol

Seriously though, writing for videogames is harder than most people think but it doesn't make the criticisms thrown around here any less valid. While the rest of the article isn't too shabby, that line is absolutely atrocious. You'd think these people would proofread their own work first before submitting it.

Shouta: then again, some people are just shitty at proofreading their own stuff. ;)

If that was a qualification, I wonder how CK got in? :lol I kid, I kid.

You guys spend all day here at GAF with some of the worst examples in spelling and grammar and you have a problem with one GameSpot article? Fucking ridiculous.

We aren't paid for our writing talent here.
Mr. Mixed-Tenses has an incentive to write well, and I don't mean using colorful metaphors like unicorn giggles.

He's got an incentive to write fast and copiously, not well.

So it's not a matter of tolerance, but jealousy. OK, I get it.
