I'm trying to think of all the possible explanations for this statement, since Mormons can't be gay, and all I come up with is you're either a girl or have horrible, horrible ball cancer.

Also, I wonder how years ago, when I was still a member of the church, I would have reacted to knowing that in a thread about Hinckley's death I would be talking about ball cancer.

You'd be surprised then. :P
I guess what I mean is, would a person still even consider themselves mormon, in that situation? Maybe they'd still tell their families they are, but they surely wouldn't try to fool themselves whilst being hardcore gay for four years.

I have a gay friend who had a boyfriend for six months that said the same thing and that was pretty much my reaction.

There are all sorts of gay people out there that consider themselves catholic, in my experience. I see no reason why LDS would be any different.

Part of the rationale between the catholics I knew that were practicing 'mos was that

1) Maybe in their lifetime, the church would change its ways, and
2) God wouldn't care, anyway, since the whole mess is about love

I'm pretty sure there's a whole sub culture of people who are Gay and LDS.

At any rate I was out of town all weekend and didn't know about this until I saw something on the local news pop up about two religious leaders passing. I instantly recognized GBH's face.

I was kinda shocked, dude seemed to be in great health, yeah he was 97 but he always seemed younger.

Like Hito said its the end of an era and it will be interesting to see how the church goes. GBH did a lot of different work in his lifetime and I think he'll be most remembered for how many temples he helped get built. The church really expanded in this avenue during his tenure.

As for Monson, in my time in the church everyone seemed to like the dude. He does tell a lot of the same sort of stories though.

I'm not particularly active these days but my family is still very much so and it'll be interesting to see how things go.

Since Mormons have agressively won millions of converts in the Third World in the last few decades, how long until a non-white, non-American president comes to lead the church in the future?

The Wikipedia page doesn't say much about his legacy as president of the church.

Blacks got the priesthood under his successor if my memory serves. What flip-flops revelations occurred during Hinckley's tenure?

My sense of this man during interviews and TV appearances was that he was amiable, genuine, and put a good face on the church. That, of course is a big reason why I'm suspicious of him :).

They'll have to get Elohim to go back and review the tapes to determine if the blacks did, in fact, stay neutral during the pre-existence war between Jesus and Satan. That is to say nothing of latino, asian, indian, middle-eastern, etc descent.

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Now that's funny. You gotta think more than half of the church's population is outside of the american borders and most of it is in South America. Not a single vato in the top 12. As my mother put it when they were going to call someone to the 12, "I don't know who it's going to be. I do know three things. 1. He'll be white. 2. He'll be rich. 3. He'll be something like the great-great-great-great-grandson of the man who used to cobble Brigham Young's shoes or something."

Certainly there are blacks/vatos in the 70, but is it representative of the body of the church? Hardly.

I predict that he completely ignores it as he is trying to downplay his Mormon background.

Yeah, I agree. Especially with the Florida primary tomorrow. I think it is very unlikely that he will make a public comment about Hinckley's death.

A-ha! So I am not on your ignore list after all!

I'm amazed it took so long for someone to comment on it.

I was the center for my high school football team and the quarterback was, naturally, a mormon.

Absolutely never.

On a seperate note:

Washington Post said:
Officials of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the full name of the Mormon Church) have not been involved in Romney's campaign, although fellow Mormons have helped Romney with fundraising and a sizable Mormon vote helped Romney win a caucus in Nevada earlier this month.

It is amazing that people are still trying to dismiss his win in Nevada by mentioning the Mormon factor. He won 51% to 13%. He would have still won even if he had not received a single Mormon vote.

Romney already announced that he will be attending his funeral.

The church has not announced the next president since they dont discuss those things until Hinckley has had a proper funeral and services, but as soon as that is all over im sure they will announce Monson is the new leader.

I live in Utah so all the news is pretty much about this.

Just saw it on the news. A mormon rep said he was considered a prophet among other things.

My question is:

Is every president considered a prophet by default?

Or was this one guy just very special?

Either way, R.I.P.

Pretty much every "apostle" has they authority to act as a Prophet, Seer and Revelator, all the Priesthood "keys" necessary to lead the church. The President, the longest serving apostle, is the only one who actually acts as the Prophet, though. It's set up this way so that it would take some catastrophic event killing all 15 apostles (the quorum of the 12 and the 3 in the first presidency) to wipe out the church leadership. Of course, God would never let that happenlollolol.

When Joseph Smith died, the line of succession wasn't clear, so that's how splinter groups started early on. Since then, it's always been the longest serving apostle, AFAIK, and succession is all but automatic, though there's a 'unanimous vote' by the apostles every time.
