Mortal Kombat 9: 7 more characters confirmed

Yeah, it's fair to hate the bonus preorder DLC junk but you can't say they're holding back on the roster. I almost feel bad for them, they're going to have to try hyping up scrubs like Hsu Hao and Kira as DLC.

They'll probably be better off trying to sell people on new characters. There will at least be a curiosity factor with them.

Thats basically every character from MK Trilogy (excluding Motaro, Rain and Robo Smoke) and the addition of Quan Chi. Thats pretty cool, I would have expected them to charge for popular characters as DLC. I remember Ed Boon having a poll of what character we want for DLC. I forgot who was part of that poll, anyone remember.
The poll was:Rain,Robot Smoke,Kenshi,Shinnok,Tanya or a new character

Rain, Motaro, and Robo Smoke could potential be DLC. Also Kenshi and Shinnok are quite popular. Also what was that rumor about Human Sektor.

Cool what was the result of the poll, or is there a link to the poll. I hope all those characters get released as DLC at some point. If I had to choose, it would be Kenshi.

I just hope the 360 character isn't the Splinter Cell (?) dude, what's-his-name. That would be so incredibly lame. It would become a running joke, I bet. It's got to be either Marcus Fenix, a Killer Instinct character or a Spartan.

EDIT: Those were the characters being discussed, according to aMasterNinja.

Wow, they're actually gonna have a new character? Nice. Hoping there's at least 1 more completely new character.

Supposedly she's the red ninja tied up in the arena stage (Kitana's on the right, she's on the left). It's pretty much confirmed it's her, since Boon posted a red leg from a render that looked exactly like the red ninja on the background.

Turns out that the US also gets a pretty cool statute with the KE

6. Raiden
7. Kitana
8. Jade
9. Subzero
10. Scorpion
11. Human Smoke
12. Reptile
13. Ermac
14. Jax
15. Mileena
16. Liu Kang
17. Kung Lao
18. Nightwolf
19. Sindel
20. Kabal
21. Stryker
22. Shao Kahn (could be unplayable)
23. Goro (could be unplayable)
24. Kintaro (could be unplayable)
25. Sheeva
26. Kano
27. Shang Tsung

30. New female character wearing red clothes

So the only characters that are missing from MK Trilogy are
Rain
Cyborg Smoke
Motaro

Any word on Reptile having a human-form alt costume (besides the pre-order/dlc klassic kostume)?

I hope so because I sure as hell hope it's not a tailed version. Fucking 12 year old artists.

It's worth keeping in mind that the character select screen has 26 character slots and 1 DLC slot. So some of those characters won't be in the game initially or they won't be playable.

The producers have said that character screen is not final

Are the same guys, like Ed Boon and stuff behind development of this game? Or did the whole team basically get replaced?

Same team. The only difference is that after Midway collapsed on itself, WB Interactive snatched up the MK Team (aka the present day "Netherrealm Studios").

Judging by what we've seen thus far, Midway's death and WB buying up MK in its entirety was easily the best thing to happen to the franchise as a whole for a very, very long time...

Does Netherrealm Studios have the rights to Shaolin Monks? I wanna believe :(

I think they do. Boon has said on numerous occasions that he'd like to do a follow up and he knows people loved it.

I'd be happy if they just made an HD version of Shaolin Monks (using better art assets) with Online Co-op, ability to use more characters (there were a ton of characters that were playable via GameShark that weren't unlockable), and have them turn that Arena Kombat mode into a 4-6 player online versus mode.

They should have the rights to it since it's a MK game. The problem with making a new one is that the team that made SM is now at THQ (they're working on WWE All Stars). After they completed SM they actually started working on MK: Fire and Ice. It was going to be a Sub-Zero and Scorpion co-op game in the same style as SM. The game was cancelled due to budget and time issues.

It's actually a shame that Mythologies turned out as bad as it did. The concept behind it was actually really interesting, but they ruined it with the insane control scheme that they came up with.

Cyborg Smoke is the same character as Human Smoke, wouldn't be surprised to see the Cyborg version as some sort of 3rd unlockable costume (even if it involves giving the alt costume a different move set).

I have a crazy theory that Cyborg Sektor may actually be a girl this time around, perhaps the Cyborg version of the rumoured Skarlett/Female Red Ninja? Sektor's costume just looks a touch feminine to me this time around.

Rain appears in one of the backgrounds (Temple). I'm guessing he ends up being DLC or a super hard character to unlock because of his history with UMK3 where he was teased as an unlockable character but never existed until Trilogy.

Motaro was spotted in the art booklet I believe (from one of the KE promo vids), so perhaps hes in there. I don't think we should worry that he'll be a bipedal. MK Armageddon was a very low budget game when Midway was on the way out, so they didn't have the money to spend on making an animation system for 4 legged characters.

I hope they give Noob an Sub-Zero style alternate costume since hes the original Sub-Zero that was killed by Scorpion. And the current Sub-Zero should definitely get his maskless MK3 costume.

In general I want them to not forget the storylines they've established from the Trilogy and Deception. For example, in the Pit bio vid, they talk about it as if it's the Pit I on Earth (they say Reptile was at the bottom of the Pit), but we all know that the MK9 Pit we've seen is the Pit II on Outworld. It would suck if they didn't have the original Pit in the game, and it would suck even more if they screwed things up and put the Pit II on Earth.

Rain is in UMK3 - at least the home versions

UMK3 for Genesis and SNES was developed alongside MK Trilogy (Brutalities, Playable Bosses, Nightwolf had a shoulder move that was from MKT, and obviously Rain and Noob Saibot were taken from MKT as well) but they didn't have enough space on the cart to fit everything from MK3 let alone from other MKs.

Li Mei in the background? The only one from MK5.
A few people thought that it was Li Mei the one in the chains, but ended being Kitana with a new look.

In any case, Rain has been spotted in the church background, though don't know if that means he will be playable or not.
There are no signs of Kano yet, though who knows.

From the look of things, even though they confirmed that is a reboot and the whole message in time thing, based on the pics it seems as it gives the impression, that the story mode will be a retelling of the first 3 games combined; instead of a retelling of just one which was my original thought. Based on Shang Tsung being old in his throne room (from MKI), the Dead Pool and Shao Kahn's throne (from MKII) the city/rooftop stage, Sindel being resurrected and the cyborgs (from MK3).

I think Quan Chi has been rumored to be the only character from MK4 to be in the game (they have his model ready since the DC Universe canned DLC). He was apparently in Outworld when MKII took place, according to the non-cannon story from Shaolin Monks; but then again the subway stage in this game has posters of Kitana's artwork from Shaolin Monks.

She still is in chains
Yeah, but it confirmed it was Kitana, not Li Mei. The other one is the rumored red-female ninja Scarlet or whatever name they end giving to her. :p
Probably the characters change, or she only appears when you're not controlling her, or is just there for story purposes at first then removed.

I am going to get this game day 1 as I am a big MK fan and everything seems great except 1 thing....the art style. Am I the only one that is unsure if they like the art style or not? the characters still look a bit cartoony for a MK game. I wish they would have tried to emulate the look of MK1-3 with trying to make the characters a bit more gritty and real.

I really like the look and the team has said even when they worked with Midway that they've never aimed for the games to look or be real. The originals looked "real" because of the pictures, but as entires were released, the more "fantasy oriented" it looked. Probably ike Virtua Fighter or Tekken (though this MK kinda looks like a cross between those 2 games; at least in visuals); part because of limitations of the originals but as new games were released, as the visuals got more detailed the more colorful, shiny and glossy it looked.

Even when Ed Boon talked about "the gritty look" before vs. DC Universe, he pointed at Gears of Wars as an example of the "look he wanted", which is kinda the look this game has; but with more colors.

In any case, there's the unofficial HD remake coming at some point, so there's that to look forward for those wanting a look more like the originals.

Was like that in 'vs. DC Universe' too.
Deadly Alliance through Armageddon only had face damage though.

I went ahead and bought a MadCatz TE stick. I wanted the stick with the TE for this but I was way too nervous that it would be a subpar stick at the price that it's at (like the stick that came with Tekken 6).

IMO there should be a full nude mode. This is a series that is known for pushing boundaries and there really isn't much left to exploit as far as violence goes, so the other side of that coin is sexuality. Unfortunately you can't really do something like that these days as the publisher would bail even if MS/Sony actually allowed a game like that on their consoles in the first place.
