Mortal Kombat (series) nostalgia/discussion thread

I picked up MKII just a few hours ago, and holy shit is it hard playing the CPU. I know it's an arcade perfect port, and is therefore meant to suck quarters out of your pocket like a panhandling Hoover, but I wasn't exactly expecting THIS. I mean, projectiles are absolutely useless against the CPU. If anyone on GAF has the game and can reliably hit Scorpion's spear or Sub-Zero's freeze against the CPU, you are my new god.

How to win against the AI in MK2:

Play on 2nd player side.

I'm 100% serious.

The MK series (1 and 2 at last) is the only series to have a different AI depending on which side you're playing. It makes zero sense, but when playing on the P2 side, the AI is MUCH MUCH MUCH easier and so god damn easy to exploit.

I should make a video of how dumb it is to kill sometimes.

One example:

At the right distance, if you jump towards the AI, it will walk backwards. The AI routine is set to walk backwards until it backs off enough so that you can no longer jump in on it.

How to exploit: Walk towards the AI. :lol It'll go backwards up until it reaches the corner, where it will KEEP attempting to walk backwards until you back away. So the trick is to get a quick life lead, then walk it into the corner. Instant win. The other thing to do is to back off until it stops trying to backwards. 1 second after it stops, it will throw a projectile. Jump in and counter, practice your corner combos, anything. :)

MK2 is a wonderful thing. It's by far the best MK I've played. The arcade I was hanging around when I was in high school got all the MK2 betas, we played them all, we loved them all.. We had some incredibly good MK players...

Yeah, I read that strategy somewhere else, but one problem...

Is it possible to play on the 2P side if you only have one DualShock 3? I'm not about to go buy a second controller just so I can win at MKII. :lol

You can change the controller port by holding down the PS button, can't you?

Oh, can you? Nifty. Never knew that. :lol

(Also, Gravijah, stop having the same exact taste in everything that I do. It's getting creepy. :lol )

CAN'T HELP IT MY SDTV BREDDA

and yeah, pretty sure you can. I remember having to do something like that for my Saturn USB controller... I think. been a while.

.

Easy on the 1 player side also (just played through MKII on my arcade machine randomly a week ago.) 2P side is definitely easier in general though.

Crouch and stand still, let the CPU approach, then jump back as they get just outside of range. They'll stupidly keep jumping towards you every time you jump back. Hit them with whatever you want.

I totally forgot my Kintaro strategies after that and almost punched in my monitor.

Mk2 wins! Still the best entry balancing violence with sillyness. And it has an acceptible reptile. It lacks Goro though. Kintaro doesnt hold a stick to Goro.

I always lied the story behind the MK games and the atmosphere ebhind the series was amazing, it truly rivaled Street fighter. man it was hard deciding between the two as a kid, SF had the music and gameplay whilst MK had the atmosphere, THE WHOLE 90S EXTREME SHIT!!!!!! The MK games do not hold up gameplay wise but they have a soft spot in my heart.:lol :lol

We used to do some cool fatality mashups with Shang Tsung in MK3. My favorite was using Sub Zero's deep freeze over and over again until Shang Tsung morphed back in Shang Tsung, then morph into Scorpion and do the Toasty! fatality... I called it the Microwave dinner.

While I loved MK2, UMK3 was my favorite. Tons of hidden things to discover, easter eggs, and most characters where balanced. Nightwolf and Kung Lao FTW.

My mind was blown when I first saw a fatality (it was Sub-Zero's). The gore, the atmosphere, the characters were all so fresh and great at the time. Series was awesome until UMK3/Trilogy. Can't say the same for the 3D versions of MK.

Well my post seems like the 20th post in this thread which is saying the same thing...

Mortal Kombat II was So Fucking cheap it hurt.

Here's some funny anecdotal evidence:

So, one time when my brother was playing MKII the computer was super cheap, countering every move he pulled of. the A.I. then decided to show how cheap it truly was. My brother was playing as Lui Kang or SubZero (can't remember) against Raiden and he kept shooting his projectile at Raiden after being pissed at how cheap the A.I. was being, i.e. countering EVERY single move.

So, Raiden kept ducking under his projectiles, over and over, and my Bro was at the advantage with a higher health bar and the timer was ticking down; He was assured a win, basically. This cheap motherfucking computer A.I. decided to stay in a ducked position and SLIDE under the projectiles (keep in mind, WHILE still ducked) and uppercut Sub-Zero/Lui Kang and ended up winning the match.

it was the worst, most obvious cheap A.I. "glitch" I had ever seen in my life.

I thought random select was Up + Start and Smoke was Down + Start.

It is. Down + Start at the Portal when you get Toasty! from doing an uppercut. :D

The MK love is cracking me up, I remember when fernoca was the only one making MK threads and they'd just turn into other posters bashing the series.

I think the announcement of the reboot, and how good it looks, has re-ignited a lot of people's old love for the series.

Yeah, and its a pleasant change of pace. Although now that MK is getting tons of GAF love I rarely see fernoca post anymore.

Even though most people find II to be the best(And it probably is) I still like part 1 the most. The whole presentation of 1 did the cheeseball martial arts movie thing better than any of the sequels and it's still my favorite ost of the series. Felt like the sequels got too caught up in their own mythology and eventually started focusing on the comedy elements way too heavily(3 was just ridiculous in that regard). Still, I enjoyed the series back in the day but MK3 was a little questionable and when MK4 hit it was all over. I enjoyed DA + Deception as goofy fun games and I loved unlocking everything in the Krypt. Of course they wrecked the Krypt in Armageddon along with a slew of many other aspects.

Nevertheless, in 2010, I'm eagerly awaiting the newest installment. How is that possible!? :D

I know, it's so weird. Something like 15 years later and I'm eagerly anticipating a new 2(.5)D Mortal Kombat. It's like I'm a kid again or something. :lol

I bought a 32X for MKII. It was glorious.

Oh, and I almost bought a PS3 for MKII :lol

OMG, that's right--I had the 32X version, too; and it was glorious! I'm sure it was one of the only reasons I got the the thing. Well, and for NBA Jam and DOOM, too.

I enjoyed Deception and Armageddon, soooo... :D

Deception was a good game, no shame there. Armageddon could have been awesome if it had a real fatality system, the create a character was fun to mess around with at least.

I'm just happy to know that there's a fairly strong MK-GAF battalion here :D

I'm of the opinion that PS2/Xbox era MK franchise (Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon) was a good addition to the MK Universe. I thoroughly enjoyed the games and thought Liu Kang's death was a pretty cool twist.

I loved using Zombie Kang in Deception, heck I liked most of the additions to the roster in Deception.

you know if they are making an hd mortal kombat for xbla/psn that is like the 2d games, why cant they just go in and edit the sprites and toss em all into 1 huge ass quagmire of 2d gaming, hell they do it for free (albeit ghetto looking) on mugen Mortal Kombat Kompilations

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olsULxH39mM&feature=related

I'm pretty sure the reboot isn't for PSN/XBLA.

That said, a port of Mortal Kombat Trilogy upscaled to HD on PSN/XBLA would be amazing. Do it, WB.

So I've already had one GAF lurker add me on PSN and play a few matches in MKII. Good times. Anyone else want to get some MKII going? PSN's SeraphisCain.

don't forget Virtua Fighter ;)

Oh, I didn't know that was confirmed (?) as being real. Interesting. Though from the sound of it, that isn't PSN/XBLA either, but full retail.

All new sprites and actors and everything though? That seems like a lot of work for a simple compilation. Hmm...definitely interested in hearing more about this.

EDIT: The more I read over it, the more dubious that TRMK "confirmation" sounds. Consider me extremely skeptical until we hear something from WB or Ed Boon.

Well, good to see Mortal Kombat getting some attention.
For a time it was like it was only Anyaka and me that talked about it (and soemtimes 2 or 3 more guys); but with Anyaka not liking the latest games that much it was like only me...and a bunch of "lol MK sucks since MKII, even when I haven't played a MK game since MKII".. :lol :lol

There was a time that I owned nearly everything MK related (except the arcade cabinets, since I don't have the space :p); but still holds a special place to me. One of those franchises that I've been following since day one, and still do. And liked every game (well, except Special Forces, though still got it day one and played it. Wasn't a complete disaster, but it was a really badly done game; though the music was kinda nice)

Amazing that it's been 18 years since I played the first game for the first time. :o!

Speaking of Special Forces, I wish I had the old issue of GamePro that had a preview of the game, from before Tobias left Midway. It was completely different, almost MGS-like, and featured Sonya as well as Jax. It would have had puzzles and such that required you to switch between Sonya and Jax to complete them. Then Tobias and a bunch of others left the company and the game was heavily revised and rushed to completion.

Sad really, it probably could have been a lot better than it turned out to be.
