Mortal Kombat VIII (8), to use Unreal!!!

I liked MK 1 and 2 because they reminded me of the cheesy martial arts films that faired decently at the box office in the 90s. Once I saw Johnny Cage was modeled after Van Damme in Bloodsport(complete with the groin punch) I was hooked. I don't think a return to the roots of the original MK would do much for sales today. The controversy from the gore level is what brought the title to mainstream popularity. Nowadays it's going to be harder to create a similar level of shock value with gore.

Well, it was expected; considering the relationship with Midway and Unreal..plus the fact that MK characters/voices were in an Unreal Championship game also...

The full interview is here: http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200701/N07.0126.1420.01117.htm?Page=1

Though mostly focused aroun Armageddon for Wii, page #2 contains the details regarding MKVIII:

-Will use Unreal 3 Engine
-Gritty/dirty visual look (like Gears of War)
-Everything from the previous games is being throwed down
-No 3 fighting styles
-No colorful visuals
-More darker tone
-Different control scheme
-Completely different gameplay
-November 2008 release date (aiming to that date)

Well, time will tell as always...

Honestly I'm not a MK fan or anything....but seems to me like they are digging themselves in deep already. I somehow find it hard to believe that a MK game could look anywhere near as good as Gears....but heres hoping they prove me wrong ;p

Gears = Unreal engine
MK= Unreal engine

I do not see it as being that far fetched.
I just wish they would escape the whole super combo juggle crap which has ruined fighting games (imo).

It's not really that simple. I'm not saying its not possible, but the level of detail in Gears is just crazy. I just don't see that kind of quality coming out of a MK game.

But whatever, I could be wrong. ;)

by the way, the best fighter last gen was a 2D fighter and my user name gives it away which one it is.

-tosses a rose

last gen started over a decade ago?

and being modeled after a kung fu movie would make it far more realistic than just about any game

What they need to do, is make the game INCREDIBLY violent, and equally as violent for the men and women (a lot of games pussy out when it comes to women, the RE series for example).

None of the cartoony shit. Still over the top, but nothing cartoony. Give us ****in' detailed intestines spilling out of people, bones sticking out of their bodies, realistic blood (none of the retarded spouts of blood from the old games), and fatalities that make people cringe.

Yes, I'm sick. :P

But I think if they really want to reinvent the series, they should not only work on the graphics and gameplay, but they should try and SHOCK people again, like they did so many years ago. Make the media outlets ask "are video games getting too realistically violent?" again.

Not enough pushing the limits these days.

Street Fighter III 3rd Strike released in arcades in 1999 (New Generation in 97, 2nd Impact in 98)

Console wise, it first apeared on the Dreamcast (Dreamcast started last gen (98 in Japan), (99 in NA), Dreamcast being the only console to get all three SF3s.

So 3rd Strike is last gen because the PS1 and Saturn would poop and die if it ever tried to hand a SF3 game. They had enough trouble with X-Men Children Of The Atom in early hay-day, imagine trying handling a SF3 on the 32-bit machines.

I`m right like always anyway

SF3 New Generation is a 97 game, maybe that is early...

but on PS1 and Saturn hardware, SF3 would never run on the them. (4MB Cart barely hand Marvel Super Heroes :P)

So in terms of hardware, SF3 is last gen

Gears has much larger maps, multiple enemies on screen and has far more intensive physics to deal with explosions, choppers crashing, bugs breaking through buildings, etc.

well, and then one day in germany (oh.. forgot.. MK is forbidden there)..

well, and then one day in idontknow, someone kills someone, they find a copy of mk 8 and the media will start the whole debate about videogames all over again, woho ^^

on topic, the arenas should be more interactive in the new one, kinda like with stranglehold, nearly completely destructable etc.

im also thinking about an online battle royal mode, or somethin like that, where four playes fight each other last man standing style.

if the rumour about scorpion being human form then maybe they will take a more realistic approach, meaning no shooting, teleporting and such

Stuck in movie limbo. I don't think there's even a script or director. It was never close to coming out, most of the talk of it has always just been rumor.

Last I read the latest was that they had fired Robin Shou as Liu Kang and it now focuses on Sub-Zero and his past or something.

Lol what? RE in no ways "pussy" out of violence towards women. It never has. The same deaths happened the same way when you played as a female character. Ada still got her head cut off in RE4. Hell, their was a lady with a pitchfork through her skull still bleeding in RE4. Equal Treatment for all.

Are they going to make another Shaolin Monks type game. That kicked ass. I had way more fun with it than the regular MK games.

Thank you for translating those fancy Roman numerals. MK 8 - wow, the series just keeps getting better and better. Definitely worthy of the continuous sequels.

...Does the fact that you felt the need to do that that prove how dumb MK fans are? That's 8! E-I-G-H-T!

Marcus Phoenix for the 360 version. Character model and vocals are allready done.
Kratos for the PS3 rev. Just pallete swap him with that one guy...
Project Hammer dude for Wii?

I'm surprised people still care about this series.

MK peaked at no. 2, and even that title was no good.

At least Shaolin Monks did something interesting with the franchise instead of add ridiculous characters, cheap ass moves and the most trite and retarded storyline in gaming.

I skipped the second movie, but did they bring Sub-Zero back, or would 3 be sort of a prequel?

He is in Annihilation, but it's the original's brother just like in the games.

The new movie is supposed to be a prequel I guess. I don't think it will ever come out anyway.

How is the polygon collision in the Unreal Engine 3? Can you grapple and hit things directly outside of a simple mele attack? I know that Unreal Engine 3 is very sexy but how good is it for direct collision stuff? I do recall that Gears of War has curb stomps and chainsaws but is there something with UE3 can outdo what the Virtua Fighter 5 engine does so damn well?
If the UE3 engine is great for close contact stuff, then give me my Gunstar Heroes mod with grappling, high kicks, and body slams

Also is the in house Team MK fluent enough in the UE3 engine that they can deliver a fast, easy to use, non frustrating, fighting game.

If I were Midway, I would downsize the MK coding team, keep the artists, and have development outsourced to Dimps, Craft and Meister, Arc System Works, Game Republic, or even gasp Dream Factory; people who know how to make responsive fighting games. Sort of like what Electronic Arts did with Aki when they developed the Def Jam games. Unfortunately, the Midway management honestly believes that the current team is good enough since their series is the most popular fighting game in terms of sales for the previous generation.

My worst fear is that they develop the next MK game into something like The Grid but fireballs and hand to hand combat instead :( This is a guy who LOVED the arcade Grid and wishes that it will be out as a downloadable game this generation.

Who knows, Jarvis and co at Raw Thrills could port MK VIII back to the arcades where they belong. Please Midway, DO NOT USE ANALOG CONTROLS WHEN USING THE GAME! I want to use my Real Arcade Pro for a non Japanese fighting game.

Where is the 3rd Mortal Kombat movie anyway??

As of right now..2008 is the year.

Director (mink, the director of Into the Sun) has confirmed multiple times through his MySpace, IMDB account and other websites/interviews...is that they have been working on scripts, and that they don't want to announce anything till everything is settled.

From what he said :he (Director), Larry Kassanoff (Producer-Threshold), Drew McWeeney (script writer- also staff from Aint it Cool News) are daily working on scripts and exchanging ideas with Midway Chicago. Drew admitted he submitted the first few scripts around 1999..so they have been working on the movie since then]

When a script is done, they send it to Ed Boon were he makes notes to it and he then sents them back.

Last October, Boon was reading the latest script and said he liked it...last month, mink said that they are still working on the script and that it changes daily.

Confirmed so far:
-Characters will have their trademark moves/fatalities in the movie.
-Much darker tone than the first movie
-He says that this movie is going to do what Batman Begins did to Batman.
-Scorpion is expected to steal the movie with all his mvoes and stuff..director said that his trademark spear is not going to be like it was on the first 2 movies.

Ehr...
-I posted this on the NeoGAF forums, so by your logic it should be the users of this forums that are dumb..and not the MK fanbase.

-Also, the "translation" was simply because there's no official title/number/name for the eight game...the staff is constantly (joking) calling it: Mortal Kombat Ocho (that means eight in spanish :lol )

Great stuff right there. I never could figure out how you can take one of the most controversial games as far as blood and gore goes and make it into a PG-13 movie. That's almost as bad as "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?"

However, being a movie nerd that I am, I hear of projects that sound so awesome, but never get made. I imagine that's what will happen to this despite the Internet buzz.

Not to derail the thread, but are you a joke character?

SSBM a fighting game? :lol

.. It is.

So please tell me, if it's not a fighting game, what genre is it in?

So is Power Stone not a fighting game?

Just because it is a different type of fighting game, doesn't make it any less of one.

And ask many pro SSBM players, it can require tons of skill.
