Most annoying PS3 feature no one talks about.

Well, we can settle this once and for all. I've checked on the 360 time and time again, as I said, I don't have much HDD space, so I know whats going on there. On the PS3 however, it seems to be the same, but I haven't given it the same level of close attention. So in an effort to settle this, I will test it. Give me a demo or something to download, and I will download and install it. I'll check my HDD capacity before and after download and install.

I however, don't own a digital camera, but I do have a 360 camera, so how would I document this?
that wouldn't matter... they could figure in total size and reserve it for the download.

but as I said b4... I doubt its anything more then a compressed container requiring no install.

Honor System dude. DL Kane & Lynch. I think both XBL and PSN have that.

I don't mind installs with retail games, but the install times on demos (up to 30 min with R&C) is total bullshit.
I'm not a fan of the demo installing process either, but 30 minutes for the R&C demo sounds really suspect. I've seen you say this same thing once before, and today I'm going to delete/redownload R&C demo and time how long it installs :P
30 minutes just sounds impossibly long, and I don't remember it being nowhere near that with the demo.

:lol .."no one talks about" .. :lol

In my case..I don't care..
Th download is finished, ..press the install option..wait a few seconds/minutes..and that's it..

Not for you, per se, but just to settle this stupid debate. It's one or the other, so if we knew wtf was going on, then there couldn't be a debate. But you're right, why bother? Someone would just spin the facts anyway.

Well I just deleted Blast Factor demo.

Blast Factor Demo Size: 112MB
Size Before: 8307MB
Size After: 8424
Difference: 117MB

Small, but it's there, the demo ain't that big either, and I don't recall the Install time. I might try later on with a bigger demo when I get bored with it.

the file container format that the 360 demos (and other content) are stored in is documented.
We're talking about the PS3.

my most annoying PS3 feature is the controller. i just bought a PS3 yesterday when playing resistance all i did was jab my thumbs into each other since the two thumbsticks are so close together. anytime i pushed the two inward it happened.

also, anyone ever notice that with PS3 demos, you need double the amount of space free than the size of the demo?

i noticed this when i wanted to get the club demo...

Have you ever stop to think that, again in the spirit of being pointless, what you download on the PS3 is actually 360 data...hence, the PS3's really not "installing" but doing a realtime port of it? hence the "ludicrous" wait some of us have to endure?

the mind boggles..

The 5MB may be the save file.

1) You only have to install it once.
2) Using the PS3 hardware capabilities to eliminate or reduce load times is a signal of good and thoughtful design, not bad.

1. - So What? It's still annoying and I don't have to "install" demos at all on the competition's machine. Your Point?

2. - Has jack shit to do with demos, which if you had READ my post before your knee-jerk reaction you'd see I specifically said I didn't mind installs on retail disc-based games. The demo's already on the hard drive, it shouldn't need a PC-style install to speed up disc access. If the competition does something better than you do then it's a failing. This isn't even a preference based issue like the controller. It's just worse software design, period. Owning all consoles allows me to directly compare and contrast them all.

I play games on PC and all systems, but I like to keep the console and PC experience as far apart as possible. The installation process is one of the things I hate about PC gaming and that's one of the reasons I play games on a console. I don't like the fact that this aspect of the PS3 is trending closer to the PC side.

Those of you saying "Well if it bothers you then sell the PS3!" sound like ignorant children. You can like something and still have annoying complaints about it. I complain about my wife all the time but I love her dearly. This kind of sentiment is akin to a redneck saying "Well if you don't like it, move to Russia!!". Utterly retarded.

That has never happened to me, and I've used the Dual Shock since PS1. How large are your hands? I thought I had large hands (7-8" base of palm to top of middle finger)...

Back OT, no one is really annoyed by having to wait a while to install stuff... its just cool to bitch about anything that is different b/w the two consoles on GAF... also, its fun as hell... :D

I'm more interested in why people always are highlighting the differences between the PS3 and 360 negatively. I have yet to see a post saying: "OMG WHY CAN'T WE INSTALL OUR OWN HDDS IN OUR 360 MS YOU IS SUCK".

Besides the fact that these complaints have been like this since launch and it hasn't changed. At least XMB is rumored to be in the works.

what's wrong with waiting a few min to 30min
read a book, watch tv, go online on your computer, etc
i'm sure you can find plenty of things to do while you wait for the quick process

Why the hell do you have to install everything! I've been installing the Uncharted demo for 7 minutes and still only 40% finished.
Would installing a faster 2.5 harddrive like those 10,000+ rpm 16MB Cache help?

according to some dudes who did some tests with faster drives, you can increase install time up to 30% on faster drives. The temperature of your unit will rise from 50c to 52-53c wich means the fans will kick in a bit earlier.
there's a thread on their antics up on the official ps3 boards.

It's annoying.

I understand the reason why the console does it. I understand the "positive things" that are supposed to come from such an installation as well as the "positive things" that come from having a console do such a thing.

It's still annoying.

or that could be time you could be playing a game/demo <_<

I play games to play games... not to read books, watch tv or make food.

Cool, I'm thinking of going that route. :D

5MB of non-data due to files not being the exact size of a sector that the file allocation table is split into?
Hum, I miss understood you, I thought you were talking about something like a LBA list.

The PS3 sucks, get over it. Srsly.
Now thats going a bit far... If people never complain about things that bother them nothing would ever change.

I find it strange that so many PS3 users feel its acceptable that it works this way.

Anybody not like the PS2 playback? It's always so fuzzy and it ruins some games like Red Dead Revolver. I tried turning off everything and it's still fuzzy as all hell

whats this have to do with installing demo's and whatnot?

*EDIT*
oh wait... most annoying feature... I see.. maybe..

My biggest issue?

The fact that my PS3 will pause its download of demos, movies, or whatever while i'm watching a DVD, Blu-Ray, or while I play other games that involve multi-player.

It used to download regardless of what I was doing but ever since the 1.93 firmware it just refuses to download while I'm doing something else. Even if I set it to "perform in background" it will stall out and wont resume transfer until I stop what I'm doing.

Does it make me hate my PS3? no. Is it a inconvenience I wish I could resolve? Yes, very much yes.

Actually, if there is a system option that I can tweek to fix that I would like to know wha tit is. I don't know if i've accidently shut some function off that allows me to download while multi-tasking but apparently my PS3 has lost that function at some point.

However, my install times never take more than 2-3 minutes. Ever.

Interesting that I've got messages telling me my dl's have completed during multiplayer. (Not sure about the movies, never dl'd during one.)

Seriously, the amount of people who don't read the OP is staggering. If that shit were bannable, the thread would be only 2 pages long.

Oh, and this should be said:
STOP UPDATING THE FIRMWARE, SONY, THE PS3 IS PERFECT AS IT IS!!!

WTF? Yeah stop adding features!:lol I'm amazed at how many people have bitched about fw updates. Unless this is a joke post too?

The amount of people who make drastic assumptions and spread speculative fiction about something that they know nothing about, trumps them.

You install on the Xbox 360 but it occurs as your downloading which has to limit the speeds. The worst feature of the PS3 is the goddamn handshaking that goes on. I fucking HATE that shit.

If anything that should be bannable, but then there would be hardly anyone on GAF:lol

The installing is NOT what anyone is complaining about.

It is the factthat it won't install in the background, and that you have to sit and wait for it, instead of going and playing a game or something.

At least, that is my understanding of how the PS3 works. If I'm wrong, please let me know.

Search for cool running drives.. its not that hard, type Google. And what I've read, no one has overheated their PS3 by putting in a faster drive.

The 20GB was 5400 RPM and the 60GB was 7200RPM. The stock 20GB drive had a 2 or 4 MB cache and the stock 60GB drive in the PS3 had twice that.

From what I've read and heard, hard drive RPM speeds make no discernable difference on loading performance for the PS3. On the other hand, a bigger hard drive cache does make a noticeable difference.

The largest cache I remember seeing for an SATA laptop drive is 16MB but they're hard to find in lower hard drive sizes like 80GB and 120GB.
