Well, we can settle this once and for all. I've checked on the 360 time and time again, as I said, I don't have much HDD space, so I know whats going on there. On the PS3 however, it seems to be the same, but I haven't given it the same level of close attention. So in an effort to settle this, I will test it. Give me a demo or something to download, and I will download and install it. I'll check my HDD capacity before and after download and install.

I however, don't own a digital camera, but I do have a 360 camera, so how would I document this?

that wouldn't matter... they could figure in total size and reserve it for the download.

but as I said b4... I doubt its anything more then a compressed container requiring no install.

I don't mind installs with retail games, but the install times on demos (up to 30 min with R&C) is total bullshit.

I'm not a fan of the demo installing process either, but 30 minutes for the R&C demo sounds really suspect. I've seen you say this same thing once before, and today I'm going to delete/redownload R&C demo and time how long it installs
30 minutes just sounds impossibly long, and I don't remember it being nowhere near that with the demo.

2) Using the PS3 hardware capabilities to eliminate or reduce load times is a signal of good and thoughtful design, not bad.

1. - So What? It's still annoying and I don't have to "install" demos at all on the competition's machine. Your Point?

2. - Has jack shit to do with demos, which if you had READ my post before your knee-jerk reaction you'd see I specifically said I didn't mind installs on retail disc-based games. The demo's already on the hard drive, it shouldn't need a PC-style install to speed up disc access. If the competition does something better than you do then it's a failing. This isn't even a preference based issue like the controller. It's just worse software design, period. Owning all consoles allows me to directly compare and contrast them all.

I play games on PC and all systems, but I like to keep the console and PC experience as far apart as possible. The installation process is one of the things I hate about PC gaming and that's one of the reasons I play games on a console. I don't like the fact that this aspect of the PS3 is trending closer to the PC side.

That has never happened to me, and I've used the Dual Shock since PS1. How large are your hands? I thought I had large hands (7-8" base of palm to top of middle finger)...

Back OT, no one is really annoyed by having to wait a while to install stuff... its just cool to bitch about anything that is different b/w the two consoles on GAF... also, its fun as hell...

I'm more interested in why people always are highlighting the differences between the PS3 and 360 negatively. I have yet to see a post saying: "OMG WHY CAN'T WE INSTALL OUR OWN HDDS IN OUR 360 MS YOU IS SUCK".

Besides the fact that these complaints have been like this since launch and it hasn't changed. At least XMB is rumored to be in the works.

according to some dudes who did some tests with faster drives, you can increase install time up to 30% on faster drives. The temperature of your unit will rise from 50c to 52-53c wich means the fans will kick in a bit earlier.

It used to download regardless of what I was doing but ever since the 1.93 firmware it just refuses to download while I'm doing something else. Even if I set it to "perform in background" it will stall out and wont resume transfer until I stop what I'm doing.

Does it make me hate my PS3? no. Is it a inconvenience I wish I could resolve? Yes, very much yes.

It is the factthat it won't install in the background, and that you have to sit and wait for it, instead of going and playing a game or something.

Search for cool running drives.. its not that hard, type Google. And what I've read, no one has overheated their PS3 by putting in a faster drive.

The 20GB was 5400 RPM and the 60GB was 7200RPM. The stock 20GB drive had a 2 or 4 MB cache and the stock 60GB drive in the PS3 had twice that.

From what I've read and heard, hard drive RPM speeds make no discernable difference on loading performance for the PS3. On the other hand, a bigger hard drive cache does make a noticeable difference.

The largest cache I remember seeing for an SATA laptop drive is 16MB but they're hard to find in lower hard drive sizes like 80GB and 120GB.
