Most annoying PS3 feature no one talks about.

PirateSean said:
I don't see it as a problem at all, since its a one-time install. I install everything on my PC, which mostly take longer than PS3. Just go make a drink or something.

Seeing as the PS3 is purportedly a console, I believe therein lies the beef.

There's a reason I like console gaming and not PC gaming.

The installing is NOT what anyone is complaining about.

It is the fact that it won't install in the background, and that you have to sit and wait for it, instead of going and playing a game or something.

At least, that is my understanding of how the PS3 works. If I'm wrong, please let me know.

No it won't.

Ok so why do some people say their installs take only a couple of minutes for everything, yet i havent ever installed a demo faster than 10 minutes? Most are closer to 20 minutes if the demo is a gig in size or over.

Why does it take so long? Seriously, isnt the cell meant to be supa dupa fast for fecks sake.

If it installed stuff in the background that would be a start, but to be honest id prefer it if it really did just take a minute or two and was then playable.

My PS3 gripes:

How can I tell when my controller is fully charged?

Is there any way to charge the controller while the PS3 is not on? I'm guessing you can charge it from a PC, but I haven't tried it. No, I'm not buying a special charging station.

Also, why is the cord so short? What happens if I'm running low on batter and want to keep playing? Do I have to sit 3' from the TV?

Go to the store and buy a longer cable. It is a standard USB to mini-USB cablethat you can find anywhere.

You install on the Xbox 360 but it occurs as your downloading which has to limit the speeds. The worst feature of the PS3 is the goddamn handshaking that goes on. I fucking HATE that shit.

I'm calling bullshit on that. I've never had anything take that long to install. Even when I installed UT3 to the hdd it didn't even come close to that. Any reason why you have a XBL gamertag in your profile and not a PSN ID? hmm...

Sorry dude. I was saying you are right that it won't install the dl in background.

No need to apologize. It's my own difficulties withthe English language (which, mind you, is my first language) that cause me to be confused.

I don't understand why they won't let you install in the background, though? I mean, even with the PC comparison that fails, because every time I'm installing something on PC I am playing a game or surfing the net or watching a video at the same time.

-on your ps3 press home button it will display the battery charge
-yes you can charge your ps3 controller from pc or any powered usb.

Who knows. I'm sure can be implemented though. I'm no genius, but if you can background dl'd, you should be able to background install. Maybe it's a TBA feature for a future fw update, but we all know how people hate those.:lol

OP fail. The biggest unspoken issue is not being able to output audio over HDMI and optical simultaneously. Also, not charging pads while machine is in standby mode.

Insecure fantards are a feature of all consoles that I'd like to see 'fixed'.Preferably by getting them all laid.

Saying it may come later doesn't excuse the factthat it isn't there now.

And I think the firmware complaints has more to do with Sony's style of releasing a million intermediate updates between official revisions. If they just waited, and sent major updates out, but less frequently, I doubt anyone would complain.

What's the purpose of having an eject button on the controller? If you eject the disc you're still going to have to get up and move towards the PS3 to remove the disc.
I use it all the time. It actually happens to be one of my favorite added features. By ejecting it, I don't have to put a finger print on my shiny PS3 and the only thing I have to do when I get up is take the disc out (instead or pressing eject and waiting). I've become spoiled by that feature, I wish my Wii console had it.

Use it using a PC. That's the easiest method. It's what I do (does it the quickest).

Is there any way to charge the controller while the PS3 is not on? I'm guessing you can charge it from a PC, but I haven't tried it. No, I'm not buying a special charging station. You can charge it with a PC or laptop USB port. Between recharges, I get about 15 hours of gameplay.

Also, why is the cord so short? I don't know but Sony wanted to make sure people could recharge out of the box so that was probably the cheapest way.

What happens if I'm running low on batter and want to keep playing? Do I have to sit 3' from the TV?The solution is to buy a longer cable. A decent length can be found for less than $10 and some people probably have a couple longer spare ones lieing around from their PSP, computer or digital camera.

Answers in bold.

When it stops flashing while being charged.

You can use any USB port. I use the one on my cable box.

Buy a longer cord or charge it more often.

Any modern USB port. This is actually one of my favorite things about the PS3. When my controller runs out of juice because it didn't switch itself off, I just plug it into my laptop.

Just my opinion, but even though that would nice it's not a huge deal to me. The installs don't take that long and anyone who says otherwise is full of shit. I would rather have substantial fw updates like your talking about, but I'm not going to bitch about a free service.

Another interesting note: You can download drivers to use the Sixaxis as a gamepad on your PC. :D

EDIT: Just remembered a 360 controller issue I had yesterday. I was gonna play OB but all of my rechargeable batteries are dead. I wasn't able to play so I was annoyed but I didn't make a thread about it. :P

Yes, really i am an xbot just trying to spread the bad word against the PS3 ¬_¬

It has nothing to do with the fact ive had my ps3 for just 2 weeks and havent updated my profile. Nope, nothing at all. I havent enjoyed completing uncharted and most of motostorm, that was just my imagination, i was actually enjoying my 360 the whole time!

Why not check my post history which contains plenty of PS3 friendly posts. Or not just look at my junior status and assume im a fanboy.

Except wireless 360 controllers.

Which still work if you buy a cheap dongle.

Do these PS3 drivers let you use the controller wirelessly, or do you have to have the USB cable plugged in?

That's a pretty big annoyance when it's completely uncalled for. If I don't have to deal with it on 360 and Wii, why PS3?

You do have to deal with it on the 360, you just don't notice it.

Only if you want to overheat the PS3.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=59053

Pros:
- Increase speed, every time you access the hard drive

Cons:
- Cost is higher

Myths:
- 7200 rpm drives are hotter. This is not true. In fact, a Hitachi 5400 rpm drive produces as much heat as a Hitachi 7200rpm drive; and the Seagate 7200rpm drives are actually cooler than some drives.
- 7200rpm drives use more power. This is not true. They use an average amount of power. Some drives actually use more and some less.
- 7200rpm drives are louder. This is not true. In fact, the 7200rpm seagates are actually some of the quietest drives. Hitachi is knows as having louder drives, but their 7200rpm drives are no louder than their 5400rpm drives.

If you have blue-tooth on your PC than you can use it wirelessly.

@Deus Ex: But on PS3, there is no discernable performance difference between the two RPM speeds. I also never said that one gets hotter than the other. I just said that the difference is pretty much irrelevant.

Chill out kid. The latter is easier. I'm just a bit jaded from this pointless thread. So please accept my apology for the assumption. The more important question is why the fuck your installs take that long? What SKU do you have?

Do you know how to read a thread and comprehend it? What an idiot.

edit: the issue in the OP seems like a no big deal to me.

Lol i was expecting someone to give me a reply along the lines of yours to be honest.

I have a 40 gig. Most people i ask say their installs are fast but the thing is, everything else about my machine works fine. Its just installs that are borked. Other people have mentioned long installs so im not the only one.

Did i miss the 'full power, captain!' option in the system menu or something?

On a side note, when the fan kicks in, my PS3 is about as loud as my 360 reading a game. I think its cursed or something.

Just checked his post history. He also said his PS3 is as loud as his 360. So either his PS3 is seriously fucked up or he's lying through his teeth. Probably the first, I don't know.

I kind of thought you'd say a 40 gig. I have a 60 and it's alway been great for me. What exactly aside from less usb ports and loss of BC is different about the 40 gig that make it do that? Either way install times like that are BS and I'd try to have it replaced if I were you.

I would have replaced it by now but its such a hassle when you buy from online retailers, shipping it back and waiting for a new one.

I can live with it as long as the whole thing doesnt die on me. Im usually lucky, never had a console break on me yet (master system was my first :)).

Congrats on not bothering to read the thread, and failing to understand the complaint.

Well, thank you.

I'm not reading 6 pages of bullshit arguing over some incredibly small inconvenience.

Even if it's a hassle, having your console go out after warranty is a bitch. I don't think I'd trust online retailer with a console for reasons such as yours.

I guess I just have enough stuff to do (you know, things to keep me busy) that I don't really mind installing anything.

If I had absolutely nothing to do but sit on the couch and stare at the TV while it installs, maybe it would be a different case. But generally, I'll start cooking, cleaning, playing PSP, reading, pay bills, you know, stuff grown ups do.

Who knows.

The worst thing about the PS3 are the fucking firmware updates.

I only use the PS3 for gaming every few weeks or so. Every FUCKING time there is a new firmware update that takes FUCKING forever to download (30 minutes+).

Then when it finally finishes downloading, woopdeedoo!! Installation takes another 20 minutes!!!

While the dashboard updates on the 360 are twice a year and only take about 1-2 minutes.

The only thing that I can think of that annoys me is that my DualShock3/SixAxis controller shuts off when I start up a Playstation 2 game. Maybe there's a good reason for it, but I can't think of one.

To the people complaining about firmware updates: you want added functionality and/or fixes that improve the PS3 yet bitch when you get them?

To the people complaining about installs: Try this solution. Find the [INPUT] button on your remote or TV and watch something else for the few minutes it takes to install a game or demo. That is if you are too lazy to get up off the couch to do something else like myself. :D

I think my PS3 must have a glitch...the longest demo install I've seen has been under 5 minutes

Downloading and installing firmware is a 1hr+ process, on the other hand...though only for the last two firmware updates
