So today I was doing my laundry at home, when I discovered one of my gameboy advance games was inside the washing machine after washing my clothes. I was beyond pissed that my previously missing game was likely fucked up beyond repair. So I tried it on my GBA and found that not only did the game still work, but the save files inside were completely fine. This got me to thinking, what've been the most durable game formats and consoles released? Every CD based console I've owned (PS1-3) have broken down on me at least once, whether from physical/chemical damage, or just failing over time. The CD based games themselves have been known to get scratched up as well. Meanwhile, my Nintendo 64's over the years have never given me any problems. Even the games I've owned for them have only had issues related to the save battery when dropped numerous times over the years (I've got butter fingers). That's not to say that all cartridge based consoles are great with durability. One of my Gameboy Advances had a fucked up screen after leaving it near steam, accidentally. And my Sega Genesis is starting to have problems with the adaptor port. But that's just my personal history.
What is the most durable console/game format based on your experience? And what's held up the longest?
