Most improved sequels of all time?

Mega Man 2 was an awesome, awesome game and an improvement over MM1 in every way. but not "the MOST" improved sequel- it was an evolutionary improvement over MM1, not a completely game changing revolutionary leap. something like the improvement between Pac Man and Ms. Pac Man.

SMB, SFII, and GTA3 were so massively improved they invented new genres entirely. very, very few games are on that level.

Oh, this is very true, but it still should've been mentioned a lot earlier. Note that I said MMII was one of the best examples, not the best example.

Two Worlds II, bought it today and can not stop playing :lol

Knew we'd see this one :) Though I have to agree even though I only played a demo. I'm sure Assassins Creed II was mentioned multiple times?! <3 that series.

I wouldn't say that, although it's the most obvious choice. HOWEVER, remember that, for the purposes of this topic, you ought to compare Street Fighter 1 to THE 1ST VERSION of Street Fighter 2, not the vastly important revisions. The gulf's a little less if you consider that.

No it isn't. Street Fighter II: The World Warriors was a revolutionary game that was incredible for its time and still today in many ways. Street Fighter is just unplayable and was a little more than a tech demo.

Street Fighter 2 probably is the most obvious and best choice.

Shadow Hearts -> Shadow Hearts: Covenant.

I'd say the leap from Koudelka to Shadow Hearts was bigger and more important.

Also:

Persona 3 > Persona 2 (both are good games, but 3 is vastly improved)
Motorstorm 2 > Motorstorm

Street Fighter Alpha > Street Fighter Alpha 2: Meh original game going to a real classic, and then followed by one of the best fighting games of all time :D

Resident Evil > Resident Evil 2

DKC > DKC 2

Uncharted > Uncharted 2 (even though I still like UC1 better!)

Timesplitters was an absolute mess. A fun mess, but still a mess.

Timesplitters 2 is one of the best games ever made.

THIS

I had forgotten about Timesplitters. TS2 is god-mode.

I always thought Dead or Alive 2 has insanely improved compared to the first game. Imo the Ultimate version is still the best game in the series.

Hmmm...good point. That really is a toss up at times. I'll concede that one.

You honestly scared me with all of your choices, because mine were exactly the same.
I don't like SMW more than SMB3 (regardless of what Miyamoto says).
It really is a toss though both excell in some areas better than the other, but both are equally outstanding. Especially with music, locations, and everything else considered.

Edit: I truly needed to mention Resident Evil 4 as well (incredible game, replay, everything).

RE 4 from RE 3 is the most improved sequel of all time, but it's hard to really call it a sequel considering Code Veronica, RE Zero and REmake were released in between.

ME -> ME2

  • Smaller, more linear levels
  • Bad, non-epic story
  • Less RPG elements
  • No Faunts
  • Shit equipment
  • Somehow just not as charming a Sci-fi adventure

The first game was a hard Sci-fi dream come true with a 1960-70s techno-optimist vision of the future. Truly inspired visual design.

Preach!

God, outside of DX:IW, ME2 is my biggest gaming disappointment ever :(

This is so easy:

Super Mario Bros 1 (sequel to Mario Bros)
Mortal Kombat 2
Street Fighter 2
Super Metroid
Super Mario Land 2

Wario Land 2
Golden Sun 2
Lufia 2
Dragon Quest 2
Final Fantasy 4

Illusion of Gaia
New Super Mario Bros Wii (as a sequel to NSMB DS)
Final Fantasy IX (not because it was very good, but because of the fucking shit FFVIII was)
Duke Nukem 3D
Donkey Kong Country

Sonic 2
Sonic Adventure 2 (I don't care what the haters say, this game is good, and SA1 is an unplayable mess)
Phantasy Star 4
Soul Calibur
Tekken 2

etc, I think all those games are way superior to their own predecessors, which I think are either horrible, flawed, incomplete or simply not fun.

FFIX was twee garbage, best brushed under the carpet and forgotten about.

Tales of Eternia, the game where my favorite series stopped being a companion series to Star Ocean and grew a major beard of its own (this is before Star Ocean jumped the dark with so3,)

Beyond that and talking about personal reception or reception on places like GAF, Soul Edge (snooze) -> Soul Calibur (all-time classic)

No way, Soul Blade was awesome. Greatest fighting game soundtrack this side of Tekken Tag. Plus, the female characters actually DIDN'T have breasts jiggling around every which way, where even the original Soul Calibur had Ivy.

Street Fighter -> Street Fighter 2
Virtua Fighter -> Virtua Fighter 2
Resident Evil 3 -> Resident Evil 4
Soul Edge -> Soul Calibur
Zelda II -> Zelda: LttP

Yeah, the metacommentary on video gaming generally and the Final Fantasy series, specfically, was very cutesy. Existentialism? Uematsu should have outsourced the soundtrack to The Boy Least Likely To!

(Read: booooooooooooooooo.)

Why hasn't this been mentioned more?!? Baldur's Gate -> Baldur's Gate 2. Okay the first one was already good but the second is one of the best games ever. The jump of quality was huge.

Ahh, a fellow Tekken Tag OST lover. :D

*brofist*

Zone of the Enders was an okay to average game, despite it's great visual and tight gameplay.

ZOE 2 crushed the visual and art style of the first game, got an even tighter gameplay, got an awesome story and way more engaging pacing.

ZOE2 crushed it's precedesor to pieces

Street Fighter 2 and Resident Evil 4 are the only acceptable answers. Although with RE4 it's really what you consider the game before it, if it's 3 then certainly, it's Zero then certainly, if it's Code Veronica it's still a massive improvement, but not as much as SF2.

Mass Effect 2 could actually be used as an example of a sequel gone wrong.

Nah, it has a few problems, but it is probably among my top 5 gaming experiences ever and vastly superior to the original.

Star Control 2
Warcraft 2
Street Fighter 2
Resident Evil 2
Sonic 2
Diablo 2
Doom 2
Phantasy Star 2
Mega Man 2
Wing Commander 2
Sim City 2000

Bit.Trip.Void ----------------------------------------------------------------------->Bit.Trip.Runner

Mario 3 ---------> Mario World
It is Myamoto's word =P

assassin creed 2 is improved a lot but its still boring as a game.
tekken 3 was a huge improvement from tekken.
SF2 is already mentioned here.
but the biggest improvement is dmc 2 to dmc 3 :P

Since everybody is going with the obvious, I'm going to say System Shock 2. The first one was about 5 years ahead of its time. System Shock 2 however is one of the best gaming experiences around.
