For me, the most memorable is Johnny Storm, sacrificing himself to save our world from the monsters of the Negative Zone. Ben Grimm, temporarily human and powerless volunteers to stay behind to close the gate, but Johnny pushes him to safety at the last moment.

Damian wayne's death. For some reason it hit me hard. That news report at the end ruined me.

"Bug, I have to break in! We are getting reports that the current violent conflict between Batman and Unknown assailants has taken a victim.

Robin is dead. Repeat. Robin is Dead."

Apocalypse in the beginning of Uncanny X-Force

The way Fantomex just shot a kid in the head was chilling. Especially considering Deadpool basically told him it was fucked up.

Not exactly "classic", but Saga has an insane amount of "oh shit this person's head exploded and I did not expect that" moments.

Supergirl too on a lesser stent.

Yup, these are good ones. Jean Grey killing herself rather than becoming Dark Phoenix really hit hard as well. Sentinels killing everybody in DoFP. When Spidey was killed by Kulan Gath was tough if temporary. Captain Marvel's death (Kree Mar-vell). Thunderbird. Nah, just kidding, nobody cared about him.

Edit: Belasco's domain had all the X-Men dead more or less and in horrific ways iirc. Those always stuck with me.

Terra's death was messed up too considering the build-up and her backstory/relationship with Wilson.

It ain't a superhero story, but in Neil Gaiman's Sandman:

Volume 9:
Death escorting Dream away.

"I have made all the necessary preparations."
"You've been making them for ages. You just didn't let yourself know that's what you were doing."
"If you say so."
"Dream? Give me your hand."
I was mopey for the whole day afterwards.

Oh, and on the "Glorifying violence" end of the spectrum, I gotta give it to Marvel's Annihilation for
Nova ripping Annihilus inside-out.

I read this only rather recently but it jumped right to the top for me. It was built up slowly in the background over the few issues before it and the payoff was great.

"He stood alone at Gjallerbru and that answer is enough."

yeah it's kinda hard to top Barry Allen saving the multiverse in such a fashion that even Marvel makes a spoof character to acknowledge him.

How many from Injustice could I post?

Superman killing Black Canary was probably the most depressing

Damian Wayne's death in Batman Inc.

The tone of that issue is so perfect. Magic and Loss indeed.

Another contribution:

This isn't the original scene, and it changes the iconic Pietà position, but whenever I think of Jason's death, it's this image that comes to mind. Bruce hugging Jason's body so close breaks my heart. ;-;

Jean Grey Phoenix death in the moon.

But Skurge's death is the best death in comics.

Edit: Goddamnit I always hate when I see Aunt May's death. It was the perfect death for that character, why did they bring her back!?

For me its propably Southern Bastards:
The Fathers death from Issue #4.

It was ruthless and without mercy. It felt real with where, how and why he died.

Never experienced that in a comic before.

Can't believe I forgot this.

It's even better in retrospect too. Basically everything that happens in that book afterward is because Fantomex did it and the team didn't/couldn't stop him.

Oh hell yes, it's an opportunity to post pictures without giving any context!

If you don't know what this comic is that I'm pulling a page from you don't deserve to know, you ignorant clods! :D

Please don't be this person

I don't have an image for it, but, I have to say the death of Fergus McDuck in The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck.

It's notable for being the only on-panel depiction of a dead duck in the entire Disney Ducks series. Sure, there's been ghosts and tombstones and all those things that implies deaths, but no duck corpses... with one single exception. I read that Don Rosa did not expect Disney to allow that page, let alone that panel at all. But to everyone's surprise, they DID! And thus, the first depiction of a duck, lying dead in his bed at dawn came to be in the story proper, causing many a reader to do a double take.

I'll admit other comics have more powerful deaths, but I'm adding this one to the list simply because there was only one. The father of Scrooge McDuck at the end of chapter 9.
