Most Overlooked/Underated Game Soundtrack...

If you want both overlooked AND underated how about an OST for a game that was never (technically) completed...

LogoRO2.jpg

Even though the game has been in beta on Korean servers for about 3 years before the dev team separated (why?, I don't know)the sound track was completed and composed entirely by Ms. Yoko Kanno whom I'm sure some of you already know. You can check out some of the tracks here. And trust me they're some of her BEST work. The intro theme and "Poem" are some of my favorite picks.

Sorry about the off topic but....What the fuck!?
Didnt know that RO2 was left uncomplete. Source please :(?

On topic, RO2 "had" the best opening song ever (and Prontera song was awesome too).

Might have been mentioned before but Final Fantasy:Crystal Chronicles has an absolutely absurdly good soundtrack.

One of the best in a series filled with appreciated, sometimes overrated soundtracks.

Someone did mention it, awesome!

It's one of the best gaming soundtracks out there.

Has a bit of everything. Soothing celtic bits, moments of pure awesome kickassitude, bits of bliss, painful sorrow, everything you'd ever want from a soundtrack. Brings back so many memories, which I guess is the point!

Conker's Bad Fur Day has been mentioned once, but I just want to point it out a again. Not only does it have great pieces of music, but the audio mixing and dynamic changes you hear are fantastic. Plus it's the best sounding game on the N64. And of course the Xbox version is just as good.

The Metroid series has always been known for good music but I don't think the original gets enough credit. The music as well as the graphics and level design combined to create what is my opinion the most atmospheric 8-bit game ever. Hell, I was playing though it via Virtual Console on my Wii and one day out of nowhere my wife told me that she didn't like that game because it felt so lonely. I just smiled because I know that's exactly how it is supposed to feel and the fact that they could do such a good job at conveying a specific emotion with such basic sound and graphics is amazing.

Probably one of my favorite OSTs for a game I have never played. I hear it isn't that good, but the music sure rocks. Especially the super intense battle themes. It's kinda fun imagining what must be happening to the music knowing nothing about the game.

Battle With The God Beasts (Boss theme)

Fatality II (Final Boss second form)

Many great Amiga game soundtracks out there and most people don't even know about them :( It especially breaks my heart when I see some one mention some NES/GENESIS game soundtrack and ignore the amiga version's soundtrack which usually was the best one. Same goes for C64.

If it's anything close to the first game - which I played to DEATH - the soundtrack really is amazing.

The first game is probably one of the best soundtracks Ive heard of.

Everything by From Software, really. Lost Kingdoms, Armored Core, Evergrace and so on. Kota Hoshino and friends are good people.

Also, Future Tactics: the Uprising but the legendary Tim Follin. Good stuff.

This and 1000 times this. The game was for the most part, a piece of crap, but the soundtrack was amazing! I would gladly pay for a soundtrack to that game.

A few more underrated favorites of mine:

Ibara

Show Time - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsJP-tBkh58 (Funny thing about this track is that I HATED it when I first heard it. Several listens later it began to grow on me, and eventually I came to love it.)

Psyvariar 2

Weakboson~Gorge City - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFIU-MtnCdU

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles

Live Evil - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfxachun-to

Sympathy for the Zombie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQ989VqTOLY

Dynasty Warriors 4

Eve - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAs7dk_E5jg (Absolutely amazing song. The Warriors series has excellent music in general, and is sadly overlooked.)

Fragile: Farewell Ruins of the Moon

For All People - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCE2gm2UkEc (Beautiful song. Conveys the atmosphere of the game perfectly.)

Eye of the Beholder (Sega CD version)

Untitled? (Not sure if the tracks from this game even have names) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93YcNbhlXgQ (Not many people know Yuzo Koshiro did the OST for the Sega CD version of Eye of the Beholder. It was his first CD-ROM composition, as well)

REALLY!?
Although good in it's own right, I have a grudge against ROII's sountrack because it lacks what made Ragnarok, Ragnarok... which of course is SoundTEMP!

I do remember really liking a track titled "Tez" though...

Madara 2 by Konami. One of my favorite Snes soundtracks of all time.

A town theme- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v-vmJB8A4I&feature=channel_page

Martial Law- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRgCidQKhdo&feature=channel_page

Goddess Revelation- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm5LD07LWQg&feature=channel_page

Early Birds- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAB4pEc0Zqo&feature=channel_page

Turrican 2 (Amiga)

Not sure if it is underrated or overlooked but I though I should metion it. Only played the Snes one, which also has a phenomenal OST. But this stuff is awesome.

The Wall- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGk6oWI1g0c&feature=channel_page

Secret Dungeons- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0iV-MIhUC4&feature=channel_page

The Final Challenge- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXwekFDTlO0&feature=channel_page

Some really great suggestions in this thread, I've been building up my game soundtrack collection over the past few days and I've found a lot of gems here.

I'd add to the pile...

Arcanum-ost-475x475.jpg

Really haunting and beautiful compositions for string quartet with a few tracks featuring percussion as well. Really helps to set the atmosphere in game and worth listening to on it's own.

It's not.

And old reply is old.

I'm relistening to some of the tracks before Crystal Bearer comes out, and it is absolutely fantastic.

I was ecstatic to finally come across a thread like this. I'm currently working on a YouTube channel that primarily features selections from game soundtracks that I feel are overlooked, and some of the recommendations here have been great and really helpful. Here are some soundtracks that haven't been mentioned here yet.

I would also like to strongly recommend that people check out the Crackdown soundtrack if they haven't already; the previous posters who mentioned it rock :)

Streets of Rage's first few levels are some of my favorite sounds. It's so 90s!

But my favorite underrated music comes from Legend of Kyrandia: Book One. I used to just play the music in the background and do homework. Relaxing...

Skies of Arcadia (DC) - the title and airship battle music is just gorgeous! all the other tracks are great as well. people dont mention the music in this game enough.

I love this guy's qoute
This final battle music is unique because rather than give the feel of something insanely powerful that you are clinging to a thread of hope to beat, it harnesses the momentum of the story to that point, by practically announcing that this is an equal battle, something that both parties can win. You feel the strength of equality throughout it, as it's emphasis isn't on the final boss's power, but that this struggle will be remembered throughout history. This is a fanfare of finality.

Not a single mention of Ar Tonelico so far makes me sad. :(

It's not exactly underrated among people who have heard it, but it definitely does not get enough recognition. The regular minute to minute soundtracks are definitely above average with some really catchy compositions but the real attraction are the hymmnos songs at key dramatic moments and are probably my favorite VG music albums of all time. The songs are so dynamic and varied that youtube cannot possibly do them justice (it's hard to find some that aren't compressed to hell), but here it is:
