Around here niche games are obviously more popular than with the masses. I was just wondering what niche developers people consider to be overrated?

I would personally go with Atlus. I've only ever enjoyed Catherine and Persona 4 from them. The rest of their games I have a hard time connecting to.

I also think Falcom is terribly overrated. The best Ys games have been slightly above average at best for me.

What is everyone else's pick?

Wow. I disagree with both. Falcom barely gets enough love in reality.

This thread will devolve into devs you hate.

I'm reading this thread title, if a developer is underrated who is in turn overrated, does that just cancel it out and make them Rated?

"I've had a hard time connecting to" isn't exactly a very compelling argument for why they're overrated, but okay.

Like generally unpopular games/developers that are kinda popular on GAF that you don't like?

Is that what we are meant to discuss?

Overrated is such a vapid term.

Yeah this topic confuses me too much to NOT be scared of what I post... or something-something.

I think he means developers that receive the "underrated" tag so much, that they become "overrated." That's just my interpretation

Awww, you don't like Disgaea 1? Come on mang, that was an addicting game if you could get into it.

OT: Lionhead Studios. I see people on other gaming forums call them underrated a whole lot even though all they are is a Fable assembly line. Even though the first few Fables were good, the series as a whole is starting to feel stale. I think they should work on a new IP and give Fable a few years rest.

The title is strange but I'll give this a shot. It seems folk think Obsidian is underrated but are some of the best developers out there. I think almost all of their games are trash

You shoud play Kiseki series before judging Falcom... These guys are superb JRPG developers.
The only kiseki game I played is trails of tge sky, and that is a good but not great imo. Takes long to care for the character and by the time I do care for them, the game ends. Dat ending. Maybe it'll reach great status in the sequel, which who knows when.it will get localized.

Their ys games are way better. I love them. Especially oath of felghana. So satisfying to play and beat. Also love ys 7. Already bought celcetta, will play after I beat muramasa.

Falcom is definitely a bit overrated as of late. I haven't enjoyed anything they've done since Ys Origin which came out 8 years ago. I've never really cared for Atlus either outside of mainline SMT.

Doublefine. They're very good at creating charming characters/universes but every single one of their games feature mediocre gameplay.

While I personally am not in love with falcom, they get about the amount of love you'd expect from a niche developer. I don't see them as overrated just because I don't like Ys and don't think legend of heroes is more than above average.

Atlus? I love pretty much every game in the SMT series that I've played. Plus they publish a lot of pretty nice games, like Divinity DKS. They're far from overrated, imo.

Falcom generally get a good word of mouth around the forum. People might have differring opinions their games. Not liking their games is one thing but calling them overrated heh.

Also who would ever say Atlas is "underrated". They been more than a well known developer for more than a decade.

If anyone overrates Atlus it's their fans. They overrated consistently though, so whatever they're doing right for those fans they're doing it consistently well. That's not something even Nintendo can boast.

I'm an Atlus fan btw.

Platinum games for me personally. Tho I haven't played TW101 that seems to get huge praise here I have a feeling I would be less excited about it if (when) I finally played it.

Madworld and AR are garbage, Vanquish was mediocre (tho I admit I should put more time into it). Rising is ok but even then the game feels rushed (tho I guess Konami is to blame and I do think it is quite impressive how good quality they can push out in a hurry) and I didn't think nearly as highly about it as the rest here seemed.

Bayonetta is pretty great and their best game by far but even then I got stuck with the shoddy PS3 port. Sega or plat to blame?

Anyway I think I admire them more for their ability to push out pretty good quality games more than the games themselves that are not really special at all.

This thread is kinda dumb
. But at the very least people should explain why they don't like 'x' developer, otherwise its hard for my to tell them why they are wrong/bias and have no business discussing said 'overrated' status because context actually matters in that regard.

For example, I don't like WRPGS....if I were, hypothetically mind you, to say 'Obsidian is overrated' without proper context it means nothing, I have no knowledge of the genre, I don't know the merits that people value of said developer, Overrated is the wrong term in that regard.

Platinum. They make some okay games, but most of their games lack a meaningful penalty for death, and the pacing is bad with all the cut scenes.

SMH at the Treasure mention by the way. They are one of the few devs around that are still make games the right way.

Pretty sure it's this year.

Wayforward.

I'm going to go with this as well. There was a time where I marveled these guys as gods, Contra 4 was one of the best DS games I've ever had the pleasure of playing. So I tried their original games. Shantae on DSIware, Mighty Switch force, the original Shantae for the GBC. And I couldn't do it, games are not fun, no matter how bad I want to like them. Ducktales Remastered was good enough though.

This leads me to the conclusion where they can do great with existing ip, but their original stuff, not entertained.

The story in Kiseki gets even better during the 4th/5th games! The story develops slowly, but when it start off at full speed, it's mind blowing and very very cool.

If Level 5 count, then add them to the list. Such mediocre games.

Fully agree. I loved Level 5 back in the Rogue Galaxy days and first Layton trilogy was pretty great as well, but since then they've been pumping out tons of completely forgettable and repetative games. Pity :(

Grasshopper Manufacture.

And maybe Platinum Games. They're pretty good but not THAT good in my opinion.

Told myself I wasn't going to participate in throwing the hate around but this is so true. Telltale earns a spot right beside them in my books. Simple things like movement and navigating menus shouldn't be such a chore.
