Yeah, Final Fantasy XII is another great example. XIII is more hated than loved, though.

And there are two different opinions on Bayonetta on GAF:
1 - This game is awesome.
2 - I hate this ugly character design!

I don't think that configures a case of polarization.

Seriously, I'm the first one to post this? Look at the recent GAF thread on the PSone Classics release in Japan. Half the thread called it the worst RPG on the PSone, and half called it great.

This. Sure it's got amazing animations, enemy A.I., weapons, some fucking awesome set pieces and an addicting multiplayer...but that's all part of teh graphix right?

I'd say GT5 will be one of those games, but the people that hate it will have probably given up pre-patch.

It is indeed one if the best examples. Personally I really hate it, and don't see why it is so brilliant.

lol wut? Controls are way tighter than MGS3, and the camera is fixed. Everything works except the techno babble. MGS2 is polarizing, but saying the controls and camera work is worse than any other game is a bold statement. You must of never played 3d platformers that require you to turn the camera every two seconds.
 
I think it's Fable 1

Fable + The Lost Chapters is one of the best PC games I played that year. A fantastic game even if you couldn't plant trees and watch them grow

Its not the best Metroid but it's definitely better than the prime games (Well tied with Prime 3, better than Prime 2 and 1).

The complaints about story are so horribly overblown on GAF, they are nowhere near as cringeworthy as some claim it to be. It is a pretty poorly told story, but its not any worse than other videogames. I did admittedly stifle a laugh at the cutscenes early in the game, but it was a "lol another videogame trying to take itself seriously" over "lol this is the worst thing i've ever heard in my life". Another thing...the bad cutscenes are only abundant in the beginning of the game; as you progress further they are far and few between. The gameplay is incredibly fun, and only gets better. It's very well paced (aside from the pixel hunt portions). Some of the bosses (especially Ridley) are really fun and memorable.

I pretty much avoided that thread because everyone pretty much convinced themselves that it's the worst game ever. Different strokes for different folks I guess, but that game represents my second major divergence from the typical metroid fanbase, the first being those who claim the original Prime was the best of the prime trilogy; it's definitely a great game, but it's the weakest iteration. So personally, as i said multiple times, if the majority of metroid fans think other M is the weakest entry in the franchise, then the majority of metroid fans have bad taste. They probably feel the same way about my opinion, that's fine. But I think Nintendo went in the right direction with this one regarding gameplay, I will share the sentiment that they need to work on their storytelling. But that isn't a problem exclusive to Nintendo, it's a problem with the entire videogame industry.


Basically, put me down for "loved it."
 
WoW and Eartbound are the ones that come to mind for me. I personally hate both with the fiery passion of a thousand supernovas.

EDIT: If unpopular opinions count then I'd throw God of War, Gears of War, and Uncharted series into that list as well.

Probably Wind Waker - I know a lot of GAF loves this game while many of my non-GAF/other forum/real life acquaintances thought the art style was terrible and loved the return of TP's realistic stlye. (The same argument could be made for TP I guess)
 
I'm not sure if Mass Effect 2 would count.

I'm on the GOTY side. In fact, I will go so far to say it's the very best science fiction game I've ever played and one of the best RPGs as well. I know a lot of people would especially disagree with the RPG part.
 
I'd say MGS4. A lot of people think its pretty good. It's not hard to see why. The graphics were good and the gameplay was great. Some people also like the story, that I don't get. Some fans, such as myself, find the story to be hugely disappointing and the actual game a bit half baked.

From what I can remember (Xbox version):

Take out your weapon = Veeeeeeeery lightly hold X
Fire weapon = Press X hard
Put away weapon = Release X

The result: Constantly taking out and putting away my weapon in a fire fight. It's almost impossible to fire multiple times successively since Snake constantly shakes his hands back and forth between the animations.


The camera only let you see a few feet ahead of you, from what I can remember. I hated constantly having to lean against a corner just so the camera would center and let me see where I was going. Sure, you can go into first-person to look around, but without the ability to move it's fairly useless. There are few things more annoying than being shot by off-screen enemies for an entire game.


These two issues combined made for a horrible gunplay experience. The sword stuff was pretty cool though.

Sidenote: I like how the game enters a short cutscene when going down stairs. It's a nice way to avoid the crappy stairs animations most other games have.

Maybe the Xbox's analog buttons were worse than the DualShock's, but this was a genius system that worked almost perfectly on PS2.

There are harder games out there that don't get nearly as much hate. And Zelda II is doable once you learn how to play it well.

As far as FFs go, what about X-2?
 
Jak 2 maybe. I honestly think it's one fo the 3 worst games I played last decade, while many people apparently think it's a great title.

I couldn't get past that damn tank, but I copied a friend's save that was soon after that part and loved the game.

CT is my 2nd favorite game of all time and I fuckin love Chrono Cross. People's opinion of CT isn't necessarily inversely proportional to their opinion of CC.
