Most progress you've ever lost in a game?

I had all my 360 save data on my USB stick and one day my brother thought it was his stick so he pulled it out of my Xbox and formatted it just so he could put one word doc on it. Everything gone.

Got to the final boss in Final Fantasy 1 on NES and I had to go do something so I turned the system off. Came back a few hours later and my save was gone.

Something like 30 hours in Fallout 3 (360).

I was keeping a buttload of separate save files but for some reason stupidly used all the most recent slots in one building. Hit a glitch where the game would just crash whenever I tried to open the front door.

So that was around hour 42 and the next usable save was at the 12 hour mark.

My Pokemon Gold has stolen when I had a bunch of level 100s and had pretty much completed the national Pokedex.

I lost my Crackdown data with a handful of orbs to go. I'm pretty sure that everyone's Crackdown data gets corrupted though. I have a few friends who lost their data.

Most survival horror games - I always just get pulled into the atmosphere and forget to save, and then get killed in some STUPID or DUMBASS manner that makes me lose hours of progress.

Most of these games are short, but playing through that exact same shit again is always just the biggest deflation ever.

-Bought my Wii at launch.
-Got to the Sky Temple in Twilight Princess
-Got stuck in the main chamber with falling blocks
-Turned off and thought “I’ll sleep on it and try it tomorrow”
-Loaded Wii up the next day, not paying attention, go to load up game
-accidentally click “erase data” not paying attention I don’t read and just click “yes”
-file deletes
-I sell my Wii out of pure frustration and unwillingness to start the game again

40-50hours in Dark souls. My ps3 died and save file got corrupted. It was my first play through and I was close to the end.Never found time to go back and play it again.

90 hours in Fighters Megamix on the Saturn.

I accidentally deleted the save instead of backing it up.
I had finished it 1000 times and all, so it's not like I couldn't get all those characters unlocked again. It was that you needed to clock 85 hours or something to get that stupid Palm Tree outfit for Kumachan. I didn't bother.

Back in 2008 I was erasing some unnecessary data from my Xbox 360 hard drive. Though a couple of ill-thought button presses I accidentally erased my gamer tag from my Xbox along with all of the items associated with it. Meaning: I lost my game saves for nearly every game. My completed GTA IV save? deleted. My completed Burnout Paradise save? Deleted. Along with numerous other saves to games that I didn't play anymore. The good news? Gears of War, Call of Duty, Halo, and a few others save directly to the gamer tag and Xbox Live servers which meant that after I recovered my gamer tag nothing was lost for those games. It wasn't all doom and gloom though. I eventually went back to Burnout Paradise and 100% completed it and beat GTA IV one more time. The only thing I never went back and re-earned was my nearly 100% complete Crackdown save. All of those orbs are gone forever. Now I have every game save copied to the cloud because I don't even want to imagine losing all of my game saves.

I'm sitting here playing Demon's Souls and I just lost about 10,000 souls. Feels pretty bad. I'd equate that to about an hour or so of playing, but this isn't the most progress I've ever lost.

Back during the PS1 era I was playing Final Fantasy VIII and my data got corrupted sometime during the second disc. I had to start all over. I was devastated as a kid...

Similarly my data got corrupted towards the end of Arkham Asylum. I thought it was finished saving and turned it off. Guess not. Strangely enough it only bugged me for about an hour, as the game was so fun I didn't really care to have to replay it.

What about you, GAF?

I lost my Demon's Souls data when my fat died on me, 68 hours in, if I remember correctly, have never finished the game because of this, I plan on doing it though.

One of my Gamecube memory cards died and took all my SSBM and F-Zero GX data with it. On the bright side, I had a blast running through GX again to recover everything.

Skies of Arcadia: Legends. I had
fully upgraded my island and the Delphinas
when my cousin came over to play. The next time load my game i realized that he'd played on my file using Action Replay and saved the game... Could i have kept playing? technically.... but... damn... there wouldn't have been a sense of accomplishment with god-mode characters...
I call that a loss.

What the hell how?

Had all my saves on a flash drive, got a new model XBox, and it fried the drive. I lost lots on that drive...ME3, ME2, Rage and I think one other, but it wasn't important. I was playing Skyrim at the time, and noticed that I couldn't save my game in that location, so I switched it to the cloud.

I don't mind it so much now. I'm playing it on PC and having a ball. I added the Courier's shack mod which has saved me plenty of time and picked up Ed-E early on as well, so it won't take as long. Added a bunch of radio stations and am looking to put that texture mod in (running it off an SSD so load times aren't really existent. Besides, Old World Blues is worth playing through again. Honest Hearts, too.

Accidentally saved over a Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando NG+ file with almost all weapons fully maxed out, which took a really long time to do. I always thought the "new game," "save file," options, or whatever they are, were way too close together...

Also, opposite of the OP, I had a circuit breaker problem and half the outlets in my apartment stopped working, including the one my PS3 was hooked up to while I was in the middle of playing Demon's Souls. I had always headed back to the Nexus before turning the game off, so I figured I'd have lost all the progress I made. Turns out the game put me right back in the very spot I was at when the power went out.

Had a friend who while at University platinumed GTA, KZ2 and something else apart from any MP trophies. He had no internet at Uni, so when his PS3 YLOD one night...tables got flipped.

Personally though, never really lost anything. Lucky so far I guess!

50 hours in Dark Cloud 2. The power shut off in the middle of saving and the save file was corrupted. I had made it up to the final boss/dungeon too.

About 50 hours of a Tales of Vesperia playthrough from messing around with duplicate profiles on my xbox and losing all my save data as a result. Took me another year and a half before I got around to starting another playthrough :P

I lost the entirety of my Pokemon saves from my Red/Blue/Yellow/Silver/Gold. I was bummed at the time because of the save loss but I think looking back on it I was just a kid immersed in those games and I'd love to boot up and old save just to relive memories and relive my mind state from that exact time.

On Super Mario World GBA I only had 3 special world levels to finish. My cousins 4 year old kid was throwing a fit in the car, so she asked me to give him my GBA to play to quiet him. I didn't want to because every little kid who supposedly can't read I've known goes right for "Options > delete file > Yes > hehehe funny". I created a new file for him, started a level and gave it to him and then watched as he reset to the main screen and went straight to erase file, he did it before I could grab it from him.

Well, my PS3 recently died and I was too stupid to back it up, so I pretty much lost all progress in all games, at once.

Mostly pissed about the loss of GT5, Dark Souls, RE6 and Sleeping Dogs data specifically. Although I've already more than made up Dark Souls progress. The GT5 one particularly hurts though, many, many hours put into that.

This happened to me as well. Lost everything but Burnout: Paradise Borderlands 1 and Uncharted 3 (not sure why I cloud saved U3 though).

Back when I first started playing Nier I lost all of my progress, probably a good 20 hours or so because my PS3 had a YLOD and I was not able to revive it to get my saved data :(

24 hours of Lost Odyssey.

When I uninstalled game from 360 HDD I accidentally deleted everything related to the game. I went back to play it a few months later and damn... everything gone!

Think the longest/most done was probably Disgaea 2.

Loaned my Memory card to a friend, and the card eventually got dropped in water or something, can't remember exactly what.

Lost about, oh, 250 hours worth, everyone at level 9999 and all max level weapons, except for the staff, which I was then hunting for.

Thankfully, I've eased back a bit on Disgaea and stuff like it since, lol. Had fun replaying it a bit recently while waiting for Disgaea D2 to hit, which apparently takes out a lot of the 'randomness' that forces such crazy huge time investment.

80 hours in Dark souls, i was furious because i lost like 90k Souls and pressed Alt+F4. After several hours i wanted to play again just to see that my savegame was now corrupted and i could not get it anyway back :(
Only after that i checked the DuranteFix and saw that there was an option to secure the save Files. It took me over 4 Months to start all over again but it was worth it !

I lost 3 seasons of an NCAA Football '99 dynasty in which I had played every game...so about 40 games of football. Thankfully, that pretty much put me off of playing football games for the rest of my life up to now.

32 hours in Dragons Dogma, with it's stupid 1 save only rule .....

but I then topped that with a 50 hour Ni No Kuni, which doesn't have a 1 save only rule but I did use only the 1 save after swearing never to do that again .....

Lost about 90,000,000 souls and 99 humanity going after my bloodstain after a PVP (accidental PVP). On my way to restore my stain, I hit "B" to back out of my inventory menu, sending my player on a backstep off a cliff.....
Welcome to Dark Souls

I got the brother corruption error with Final Fantasy VII.

He came home for the summer from college and one day I got back from work and he just says, "I think you're going to be mad."

He had started playing Final Fantasy VII and saved over my game. I was at the demon wall. I ended just watching the remainder of the game once he got to where I was -- which was the end of the summer.

I made it to the last boss of Mario and Luigi and couldn't finish. I always planned to go back and finish some day. Recently happened to mess with the game again to see all the save files deleted, except for one that was about five minutes in. I'm guessing a kid was messing with the game at some point. :(

I let a kid play my DS for a while, and she ended up deleting my Mario 64 DS save of about 130 stars. I wasn't too broken up over it though, I didn't play it often and was generally pretty done with it by that point. Had no plans to get all the stars.

I thought I lost my Pokemon Pearl card one time. It had about 500 hours on it, along with all my mediocre IV bred / EV trained monsters. Found it though, phew.

I honestly haven't had too many bad experiences with data loss. I did delete my brother's FF III (VI) save when I was really young. I don't really remember it, but I know he had to have been so mad.

Probably my legit ~95% TDU2 savegame (only missing some casino stuff) . Yes, i could hack it together somehow...still not the same.

My 360 hard drive failed and I unfortunately didn't have much of it backed up... 5 years worth of saves, gone. The timing was quite funny, as MS were implementing cloud saves the following month. :( In a way it was a blessing in disguise, as it led me back to PC gaming. Still, at the time it was somewhat shattering.

For reference, I had "completed" (achievement wise, at least) 200 games or thereabouts, so it wasn't a case of 5 hours here, 5 hours there. Several 100 hours + saves died. Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, GTA IV, Oblivion, Crackdown and the list goes on. I obviously take responsibility, as not backing up your data is asking for trouble.
