Most progress you've ever lost in a game?

Donkey Kong Country 2 - Froze up on my 5th or 6th try at the last level. DELETED.

Never played that game again, completely refuse to. Maybe I'll go youtube the ending right now...

I was literally at the final boss fight with Grunty in the first Banjo Kazooie. Collected everything.

Lost it all, swiftly followed by losing a controller, and gaining a hole in my bedroom wall.

Need for Speed Underground 2 and Most Wanted. I had a lot of hours in both. But in Underground 2 i had the perfect car and perfectly pimped. My HD crashed lost all progress think had more over 40 hours of playtime in those days.

I remember being angry about losing old save data, but I can't recall how much and in what games. In recent memory I replayed the first 5-6 hrs of Darksiders 2 three times and ended up hitting the same game-breaking bug each time (a lot didn't get it so it was pretty rare to get it everytime, that's why I kept trying). I never played again -- it's so frustrating.

Another one I remember is Gears 3 multiplayer. I was in the 70s on the blue rank and then I got reset. I had to start all over. I was crushed.

Somebody stole my Xbox 360.

Not that it's that hard for me to get another Xbox, the thing is that my save file for the whole Mass Effect series was there and i was in the middle of the third game.

So i lost a six year old progress save file with all the successes and fails (and deaths) of a team that i felt like friends.

I wanted to sell my Gamecube and my Memory card 256 to a coworker after setting up my Wii. I ran into a road block when I realized that I couldn't move my F-Zero GX save off of that card. I said eff it, I wouldn't mind starting over, and so I did. I had just unlocked the AX tracks on that save but let the game sit for a while, and I sucked at the story chapters, so it wasn't a complete save, and not really worth salvaging. But it was all of my hard earned progress in the game up to that point since the game released. At least I kept that one ridiculous replay.

It was the best and worst thing ever. Best that I went in and cleared the grand prix top to bottom shortly after that, and worst since I just wish I never got rid of my 'cube.

6 hours? Played Ico with no saves. I fell from a high place eventually. Kind of cool to try. Works really well with that game.

Got to the very end of Majora's Mask, and my house got broken into and I lost all my stuff.

Insurance comes and I replace everything. Go on like a 2-3 hour playing spree and the electricity goes out.

Not kidding. I was cursed with that game. Eventually I beat it though.

Ben?

Nier deleted all my saves.
Spoilers !

I had nearly completed PoP : Warrior Within. All I had to do was to get outside the time travel room where I saved and do the last section of the game. I figured I could just let it for the day after.
The day after, I loaded my game : it was now impossible to get outside of the room. I had to redo everything...

Played about 40+ hours of Shining Force II, made it to the second phase of the final boss. Had him within a hit of dying but my controller needed some more slack so a little tug sent my Genesis flying through the air before it smashed into the ground. Booted it back up and nothing. I must have knocked the battery loose in the cart for a split second because I lost my game save. Cart works fine now but I never played the game again.

The one that hurts the most?

Pokemon Crystal.
Beat the game, had about 300+ hours. I completed the game but it was still fun to play after you beat it.

What happened? Someone spilled a drink on the game and it got inside the cartridge. I still miss it.

The last instance I remember is getting stuck in an elevator in Mass Effect 1 on Xbox 360 and losing over an hour of progress. (I completed the game much later on PC)

My sister deleted my Metroid Prime save when I was near the end because I wanted to play it instead of do something with her. I remember that turning into a big argument.

I'd cry if I lost my current Pokemon save. There's about 10 years worth of pokemon in my White 2 at the moment. I can't wait for boxes saved in the cloud in gen 8.

27 hours in Final Fantasy VII due to a corrupted save. Last Nyko product I ever purchased.

Same thing happened to me. Never bought a 3rd party accessory after that. I was lucky and just copied a friend's save that was a little behind where I was though.

I completed the first 9 of 10 chapters of Halo on Legendary. Was at the very end of the 10th chapter when my Xbox died. It still hurts.

I once had a level 83 barbarian in D3. Pretty sure that is the most progression I lost.

Recently, though, my save for Mafia II bugged out. I had just a few hours left of the game (probably even less). The save would crash the game at a certain moment every time. When I tried to fix it, the save files were deleted for some reason. Never picked the game back up to finish it even though I really liked it.

Fake edit: The worst one is Peggle Deluxe. I had everything completed except 1 challenge (can't remember which) when my main HDD crashed and I had to reinstall windows. All my other save games were safe in My Documents on another disc, but Peggle was stored under "Users". I can't accurately time how many hours that was, but I remember watching most of Frasier's 11 seasons while playing Peggle.

brother was deleting some games from the memory card and accidentally erased my save data before the last boss in breath of Fire 3, I didn't like the game that much so to this end I've never bothered playing it again

Dragon Quest VII on Playstation 1.
It's set up so that everything in the game except the last dungeon and the ending are on the first disc. So I had finished everything and had gotten to the point where you save and switch discs. I saved and called it a night. That night there was a power surge and my memory card died wiping out the ~75-80 hour save file I had saved right at the beginning of the last dungeon.

I'm still heart broken about it. I never went back to it. Though I'd totally would if they ever localize the 3DS remake.

I'm sitting here playing Demon's Souls and I just lost about 10,000 souls. Feels pretty bad. I'd equate that to about an hour or so of playing, but this isn't the most progress I've ever lost.

Back during the PS1 era I was playing Final Fantasy VIII and my data got corrupted sometime during the second disc. I had to start all over. I was devastated as a kid...

Similarly my data got corrupted towards the end of Arkham Asylum. I thought it was finished saving and turned it off. Guess not. Strangely enough it only bugged me for about an hour, as the game was so fun I didn't really care to have to replay it.

What about you, GAF?
10k souls is nothing man. wait until you literally lose millions.

The "Carth glitch" from KOTOR 1 on Xbox. If memory serves, it happens around the 25-30th hour of a 40 hour game. It was a game breaking glitch where Carth gets locked into some dialogue he is supposed to have with a certain character. If you haven't picked up that character yet, or if that character isn't there for any reason, Carth tries to have a dialogue with someone who isn't there and He keeps trying to have this dialogue and you can't go any farther. Your only option was to start the game over and make sure that character was present at that point in the game.

Bioware got extremely lucky it was such a great game and most people wanted to play through it again anyway. If the game had been mediocre or sucked, people would have had riot inducing rage level fits. I'm still not sure if they ever patched this.

Well during the Gamecube days I had one of these 16mb mega memory-cards with _all_ my Gamecube saves... it failed one day... never again :(

our wii failed big enough that nintendo had to wipe EVERYTHING

my kids lost 500hrs on lego star wars
800hrs on brawl
200hrs on lego batman
etc etc etc

Was playing Halo 2 on legendary and had gotten really far for doing it solo. The part where master chief first gets transported to the covenant.

My brother for no reason slides to the Xbox and turns it off. Halo 2 doesn't save (even though it says it does) unless you save and quit. So I lost all the progress. Needless to say my brother got what he deserved. It's a funny moment for us both now though.

When I saw this subject I seriously almost cried. I remember being a kid, and my cousin came over and at the time I had shrek 2. I remember the final boss being the mean old lady (I forgot what her name was; will edit later) and I couldn't do it so I stopped playing. This nigga walked down into my basement, made a new save file and saved over mine. When I found this out I just started crying. Crying.

My 60GB ps3 was randomly getting the "yellow light of death" and I quickly tried to backup all of my save files, only to find out that the save file for Demon's Souls was locked to the system. This was before PS plus was around, so I lost my new game+ character and everything earned with it.

Another annoying loss was in a LittleBigPlanet psp level I was working on. I spent about a week straight working on a level, and I added so many mechanics that it caused my system to crash. The level I made was forever lost because it corrupted my save after the crash occurred. I was so frustrated I gave up on making levels for the psp version of lbp.

109 Hours in FFVII

I was done, just postponing the last battle by collecting everything, chocobos, etc.

Let a friend play my PS while I was away....saved over my file.

He was no longer my friend after that.

I dont know if this counts or not but all my PS3 save data when someone decided to format the hard drive somehow i had that thing since it got released and this happened in 2010 also being my main platform for gaming i had built a good library by then and it all got wiped away. yea i was shocked so now i try to have a PS+ trial card or two laying nearby when i try to mess with my hard drive or tinker with its settings.

Someone took my Gamecube memory card with 100% SoulCalibur II, finished Resident Evil 4, Mario Kart Double Dash without Parade Kart unlock, Smash Bros. Melee and a bunch of other stuff.

I was on the final boss of Knights of the Old Republic. Saved right before you enter the room to face Malak.

My buddy comes over, we play some other games, it gets really late. I'm falling asleep and he wants to try KOTOR, which he's never played before. I tell him not to save over my game while i was sleeping.

He saved over my game. It royally pissed me off.

Souls are really not that important. Don't worry about 10k, when you can help others fight a boss, and have a easy farming spot later.

Jesus, I don't think I would have been able to control my anger.

You better believe that GBA was ripped out of his little hands with extreme prejudice. My mother and cousin flipped out on me since "it was only a game". Yeah... I lost nothing. His screaming and crying sounded pretty good after that.
